how can I be racist when I'm white?

Our best known fighters are all either sicknoters or spoiled dicks who avoid the tough imported rivals.

I know where your coming from but unfortunatley boxing is also a business, so it is harder to make the fights than actually fighting in them.

This will never change but if a boxer is good enough and genuine enough then he will get there in the end.

Makes me sick.
That's boxing mate, that's why having the right promoter/manager and being part of their favoured clique is so important. If you can shift tickets you're far more likely to get the opportunities.
still, you have to charge the promoters with incompetence. Munyai, for instance, was mobbed after stopping Power again. Yet Napa gets a Euro title shot, coming off losses!

I think the phrase 'homegrown' would have been more appropriate, no?

The thing is, a lot of these African fighters are brought over on a wing and a prayer for not a lot of cash. Those that do well and get regular work are on cloud nine, compared to the lives they have back home they are absolutely raking it in.

Though there have been some relatively notable exceptions in recent times, most of these African imports don't have big followings, and so they just aren't going to get the opportunities our home grown fighters are, and are often used as credible opponents for the better prospects. Most of them are so tough and dangerous that people won't face off against them unless it is a title fight of some kind.

There was a programme on child slavery, and they showed these kids from Ghana who worked on fishing boats, after being sold by their parents and jesus christ, most of them at the age of 10 were built like minature azumah Nelson's! It's not wonder they are such tough bastards when you see where they've come from.

Suppose so Chado. In America it's less important to have the hometown following, so long as you can sell the TV package and get the casino backing. Over here I suppose it's what it all thrives on building a local attraction (and milking it to death with 14 WBU defenses!).

You'd think the likes of Munyai and Olusegun would do better in America, where you can get built up / end up in a world title elim at the bottom of a big show.

Agreed, when you see where they have come from and their background it is amazing what some of them also achieve.

yeah, I suppose so. Let's call 'em homegrown.

Even with a title on the line they're not getting fights. That Rutherford guy was DISGUSTED when he was GIVEN a shot at Jackson Asiku's Commonwealth title & never took it.

Thinking of Azumah, you probably have to put these African hard cases on Don King undercards forever to achieve greatness. Shame that King is slowing down.

Glad to see Clottey giving strong performances & getting Showtime dates, btw. I see him winning a welter crown soon.

If you're good enough you'll get there.

Ike Quartrey disappeared for five years and was in title fights within months, Ouma? Ossie Duran? Akinwande? Peter? Clottey? N'Dou?

Black African fighters get their shots...

Bika, Ashira....

And as you rightly said, Ali got a shot following defeat. All is not bleak for African fighters in the UK and abroad.

I think the case in point is Olesgun, a genuinely talented fighter who you dont feel is getting his opportunities.

Thats an individual case, I don't think Gary Lockett has either but it isn't because he's lily-white or from Wales.

To me, aside from the American fascination with a white heavyweight - I think boxing is one of the few colourless sports.

Ashira only got his 'shot' because he was a middlweight who had fought at light middleweight before, and had virtually zero chance of winning. That's not much of a shot is it? However, he did got a shot at a vacant title I think it was, against Maselino Masoe.

I certainly don't think there is a colour bar in boxing, although at one time in the UK, and still in some cases in the US, black boxers were/are considered a harder sell. Over here the likes of Maurice Hope, Benn, Mittee, Eubank, Conteh, Honeyghan etc, changed that perception.

Don't seem to be so many popular black fighters in the UK any more, or is that just that there aren't so many really popular fighters in the UK generally?

Who are the most famous fighters in the UK right now?

1 - Amir Khan
2 - Audley Harrison
3 - Ricky Hatton
4 - Joe Calzaghe
5 - Danny Williams
6 - David Haye
7 - Clinton Woods
8 - Carl Froch
9 - Matt Skelton
10-Junior Witter

Debatable, but thats a fair mix of ethnicity?

Tell me who Ashira has beaten to earn shots at Masoe, Calzaghe and Eastman.

Not bad for a guy with no opportunities?

With Ashira it was down to him being well connected (King) and ultra cheap (Warren no doubt rubbing handshands together on that one) not to mention thoroughly beatable.

I don't think it's down to the colour bar, but rather excellent Africans being underpromoted and shamelessly ducked.

Olusegun being one guy, Jackson Asiku being another. Munyai's doing pretty well for himself, last 32 opponents being Power, Haskins and Power again.

Numbembe is a tough guy, but beatable compared to the above names. Hence his getting fights with Anderson etc.

How many of those fighters are really popular ticket sellers?

I wasn't referring to non-white, I was specifically referring to those of Afro Carribean descent.

Amir Khan is riding the wave of his Olympic success and blanket coverage in the media as a result, the fact he is young and gauche is more to do with his marketability than anything I think.

Audley Harrison is infamous rather than famous, and is certainly not popular.

Junior Witter is a top flight fighter, but he's hardly setting the world alight.

As far as I am aware, Haye, despite media attention, isn't a big ticket seller, certainly his biggest fight to date, against Carl Thompson didn't sell well.

Danny Williams is probably the most popular Afro-Carribean fighter there, but not on the scale of Benn or Eubanks I would say.

I don't think it's down to Britain to owe these guys a living. Stay in Nigeria etc and see how far they get there.

You say white guys are ducking them but Power, Haskins, Callaghan and McKeever are all white and prepared to take tough risky fights. They are NOT ducking out. Power went back for more. How brave is that?

Callaghan and McKeever have had really tough careers and are definitely not over protected British boxers.

I find your post offensive on behalf of a lot of tough and brave boxers Britain have.

Ashira wasn't too bad at Middleweight, he dealt impressively with Jerry Elliott even stopping him with bodyshots and Elliott was a heavier man and notoriously strong. Ashira just got caught cold by Masoe and was blasted out, he was never the same again after that. Agreed the fact he got into the ring at SM with Calzaghe was a joke mismatch, but still we are accustomed to them on these shores.

As earlier post states, Kevin is now being trained by Bob Shannon. This can only be a good thing for Kev as it's the first time he has been trained by a pro trainer and is now getting improved sparring with the likes of Barnes and fellow pro's down south.

Yep you now have David Barnes, Kevin Anderson and Ali Nuumbembe all training in the same gym. This shows great sportmanship between fellow boxers.

Hatton's not as popular as he was though lately.

Calzaghe's ITV hype seems to have made him more popular than Hatton recently except for Manchester maybe though?
