Sykes was a very dangerous man a trained Boxer and powerlifter, he was also very intelligent but was an emotional wreck and a heavy drinker. A very nasty mix.

I have this documentary on VHS its called First Tuesday it was like a news docu like Tonight that is currently on these days.

Paul Sykes also wrote a book, Sweet Agony

PAUL Sykes who has died at 60, was a man whose life might have been changed by success in the boxing ring, but despite contending for the British and Commonwealth heavyweight title, he sank back into old habits and his recent appearances in the Press were as a drunken might-have-been.
Paul, from Lupset, near Wakefield, died in Pinderfields Hospital, Wakefield, from pneumonia and cirrhosis of the liver.

His prowess as a boxer was sufficient to bring him a title fight in June, 1979, at Wembley with John L. Gardner.

He narrowly lost, and his last professional bout less than a year later against Ngozika Ekwelum in Lagos ended in another defeat.

It heralded a return to the self-destructive course of his life from which boxing had been unable to free him. By 1990, he has spent 21 out of 26 years in 18 prisons.

He boxed as a teenager at Robin Hood and Thorpe Amateur Boxing Club near Wakefield, displaying considerable talent which, with his size and ability to move, made him formidable. But the drinking started early. When he was 16 he went to Germany to fight and the night before was carried out of a bar. He lost.

He had 10 fights as a professional, recording six wins – four with technical knock-outs – one draw and three defeats. Dave Wilson who fought him in September, 1978, was rushed to hospital afterwards and spent a month recovering.

Paul's success in the ring brought him a US boxing tour, for which he was signed up by Don King.

But Paul did not escape his troubled past, and even as recently as 2000, Wakefield Council secured a two-year Asbo banning him from the city centre after a series of drunken incidents.

His years in prison were not entirely wasted. He earned an Open University degree in Physical Sciences, and his book Sweet Agony earned the Arthur Koestler prize for prison literature.

His son, Paul Sykes Jnr, was jailed for life in November 2004 after stabbing 50-year old Michael Gallagher to death in Lupset.

This has upset me somehow.

RIP

Does anyone know why Paul went to Nigeria for his last fight against Ngozika Ekwelum? It's a long way to go for a low profile non-title fight.

Was he having problems with the BBBofC maybe?

Yeah, sad to see someone waste their life the way Paul did... his problems obviously ran very deep... unfortunately it seems history has repeated itself with his son....

I remember the documentary well; it was cult viewing back in the day, entertaining in a Northern "Lock Stock" kind of way. They dont make documentaries like they used to

Basically the guy was a fu**ing idiot who even up until his dying days was causing havok and running amok. His influence clearly shone through to his son who stabbed a 50 year old woman to death....

It is taken from the 1990 First Tuesdaydocumentary Paul Sykes: at large
i have this on VHS but cant play it as i dont have a video recorder.

Incidentilly, his book SWEET AGONY was only around £3-50 when it was released, if you have a copy its worth up to £150 now.

Over 7 parts, it is massively funny and genuinely sad. Compelling viewing. :TU:

Quite possibly the best bit of TV I have seen since Anthea Turner's hair got burned on that truck. 'Sykesie' was a one-off. I used to live in Leeds and used to love hearing tales from ex-cons of a similar age who used to be padded up with him.

My favourite line is when he's getting interviews before a fight and the interviewer asks how important the upcoming scrap is.

Skyesie, with Tommy Cooper-esque style comedey timing, dead-pans: "Without swearing it's shit or bust..."

RIP Big Man.

Quite honestly the man was an arsehole and I cant say I noticed much intelligence - You somehow feel compelled to watch but he was a tragic character who like many allowed drink to be their master - It seems he could have been a very good boxer and provided well for his family but instead allowed his vicious nature and heavy drinking to spoil his life and that of his wife and family - All that wasted time banged up in prison what an idiot and why would anyone look up to him - I do remember parts of what is now on youtube but 20 years is a long time.

that documentary was brilliant, one of my favourite pieces of TV ever.

what do you do when a shark swims up to you? punch it reet on the fkin nose!

when you're sober you're an intelligent man, when you are drunk you are a f'kin maniac

my dad was so clever he came home with dog sh't on his shoes at least twice a week

so many classic lines. the rich man was called dennis flint with the best wig ever.

Sykes had me rolling around with laughter with that and so many other lines - he could have been a stand up comic.

There is a scene with him and the camp and theatrical Dennis Flint discussing debt collection on youube - I thought Flint must have been a fictional character - only in the bizarre world of Paul Sykes..

I remember watching the documentary on him a couple of years ago, my mate had a tape of it. What a character, he had me in stitches especially with the above quoted line, when he was talking about how thick his Dad was.

RIP Paul

On Amazon the lowest you can find is £67.....for a paperback that's extraordinary. Must be rare.

Was it just a one-off documentary? If his son's inside for life I guess, Paul's parental skills didn't pay off.....

i'll hang on to if for a bit longer then.

his parenting skills were great:

i'm going to have to hit him, not just a kid beating but a real man beating to knock the glue fumes out of his head

dont walk with your hands in your pockets, you ever see a kid fall over walking up the stair with his hands in his pockets. keep them ready

my favourite part was the wedding:

i'm not playing christian pretend shit.
