AMIR KHAN: CHECK OUT HIS OPPONENTS INDEPTH...........

Post by overhand_right »

How to develop a future world champion? or... how to conceal a chinny guy who cant fight from the paying public?

You decide:

Colin Bain: 8 fights, 0 KOs (super-feather)

Baz Carey: 39 fights, 3 KOs (super-feather)

Steve Gethin: 43 fights, 6 KOs (super-feather)

Daniel Thorpe: 84 fights, 7 KOs

Vitali Martynov*: 16 fights, 7 KOs
* Worst Boxer Ever? subsequently KOd in 1 rd 4 times, even by 40 yr old non-punching journeyman Dairus Snarski!!

Jackson Williams: 16 fights, 0 KOs

Lazlo Komjathi: 38 fights, 11 KOs

Colin Bain: 13 fights, 0 KOs

Ryan Barrett: 19 fights, 3 KOs

Rachid Drizlane: 15 fights, 0 KOs

Mohammed Medjadhi: 22 fights, 3 KOs (super-feather)

Steffy Bull: 30 fights, 5 KOs

Willie Limond: 29 fights, 8 KOs (super-feather)

Baz isnt a big lightweight. He had fought for the majority of his career at super-featherweight. Baz sparred with Amir in the run-up to Khan's last fight and Baz's fight with Billy Smith for the Area title.

Baz also told me Carl Allen hit him much, much harder. I can believe that - Carl can really bang.

It's piss poor when you list it like that....

I think Khan probably can fight but there could be an issue with his chin here, he really seems to be being kept away from anyone who has anything resembling a dig about their person.

So what would you do? Put him in with Ernie Shavers maybe.
Get real. He was a kid of 18, learning his way. He is moving forward and if you have a problem with Limond, maybe you should speak to Willie. Or perhaps Alex Arthur, who thinks Amir has a hard night on his hands.

Strikes me some people in the sport listen a little too much to those who are jealous of success.

Actually Hatton.s opponents over his first 12 fights or so were pretty similar to Amir's in terms of power.

Yeah. Because theres no middle ground between non-punchers from the weight below you to world class 1 punch knockout artists

Im just putting these stats out there for people to have a read and make up their on mind. Why get so emotional?

And posting Hatton's first 12 fights would be pointless also - Hatton wasn't an olympic silver medalist coming into the pro game with much hoopla and back slapping.

You're just contradicting your own point. :)

Bit over simplistic mate. Yes Earnie Shavers, that's right.

My criteria would be to put Khan in fights with a bit more of an 'edge' to them, fights where is even just a 10% chance he could lose.

Surely this would serve him better in the long run, you make your defence tighter and stop hanging your chin out after taking a few shots from someone who can punch harder than Kyle Minogue.

So that would be opponents his own size and opponents with a better ko percentage than those he is currently facing.

Overhand,

Maybe you are correct regarding Khan's chin and a worry. I am sure that not many had concerns over Herbie Hide's chin at a similar stage (well, certainly the commentators around at the time thought he would pass the test)... His opposition was worst than Khan's and we now all know why.

However, I don't think his opponents (well not all of them) have been chosen cause Khan "cannot fight". I know, an Olympic medal is not necessarily proof that you can fight.... However, it is still a good indicator especially at the weight Khan fought in.

Also, whilst Komjathi and Drizlane are non punchers.... they are good boxers who had a degree of ambition. If Khan "couldn't fight" he would have lost to these on points. I thought they were excellent boxers for Khan at this embroynic stage - if they could punch they wouldn't be in the opposite corner vs Khan, not necessarily because of a fear of Khan's chin.... but because they would be championship fighters in their own right (of some kind).

I think these two especially were signs that the matchmaker feels that Khan "can fight".... whether the matchmaker feels the same about his chin well at the moment there is no evidence to think that he is confident about it.

Herbie Hide had no chin, but was a good boxer.

Stu, you honestly believe Komjathi and Drizlane could compete at world championship if they had power? Neither guy, particularly Drizlane, had much skill or technique at all from what i saw.

Drilzane was just there to stay in - and did so. Im not taking anything away from him, but we all expected him to go over, and he did not. Fair Play to him.

If Khan gets through Limond, shall we Lobby for Khan vs Carl Johannson?

What evidence is there that Khan has a doubtful chin, we just dont know whether he has or not until sombody smacks him right on the button, then we will see how well he recovers - Looking at the list he has been deliberately matched with fighters that have a low KO percentage to build his and zero record up - No problem with that, he has to get experiance - Limond is a good fight for him, little risk of being KOd but a tough fight that may go the distance - Khan needs the rounds and I think this fight will prove to be a good learner for him - Pointless risking him in a fight with Thaxton until he has had some better opponents such as Limond and Murray neither of which are hard hitters but very good boxers who he can learn from - My problem with Khan is he wants to run before he can walk and mouthing off about being better than everybody else at domestic level in the division is pure arrogance - As for saying he is going to win a world title sometime next year is in my opinion being a little optomistic especially with FW making the matchups - He needs to be more humble or lose fans that will watch to see him beaten instead of win.

Listen fella's, I'm in the gym with him day in day out, and let me tell you something, he can fight. Now weather(?) he can be a world class fighter only time will tell, but I've been around some of the best fighters in the world and, on potential, he's got all the tool's. He's one of the best prospect's I've come across.

Your list highlights very little to be critical of IMO. It just illustrates that you have been trawling through boxrec records for too long in search of evidence! Not really an objective or insightful look at Khans opposnents. IMO the opposition has been adequate for his ealry pro career. Though he now needs to be fed harder more dangerous hitters. You always mention the guy who has SUBSEQUENTLY been knocked out numerous times, well at least you now say subsequently after picked you up on this last time. Fact remains that at the time of fighting Khan there was no significant evidence to suggest he had such a crap chin. Anyhow, there's a fair few decent fighters in there have given him some experience and most importantly, the opportunity to find his feet at pro level and grow his confidence, as it surely has. Khan's an exciting fighter who of course remains relatively untested, particularly, in terms of his chin, but I for one am patient and happy with his progression. You seem very bitter and jealous I might add, is your real name Murray?

No, but I think Komjathi would be EU title winning level and competitive at EBU level. He was competitive in his second meeting with Lauri (who is competitive at EBU level).

I never mentioned anything about world title level... I did stress a championship level (of sorts). I didn't mean World title. I meant stuff like Intercontinental belts and possibly the EBU title (at maximum) - which could lead to a world title fight I suppose.

Drizlane was a bit of a suprise, as stated elsewhere. His record isn't great, but I think he would be fighting for titles with power. Again, it would probably be the EU title at highest - but thats becoming a decent stepping stone belt to bigger fights.

So overall the Ko ratio of his combined opponents is about 15 %
Altho i think youl find the win percentage of these opponents is porbably much better than prospects usualy face.

But wins over who? Numbers dont tell the story.

Peter Buckley has 200 losses but guys would learn more fighting him over 6 or 8 rds than blowing out some chump from Belarus with an inflated 10-1 record who cant really fight.

Yes, its a very bitter thing to do, to simply list his opponents with their amount of knockouts next to them.

PS no my name is not Murray.. its Baz Carey.
