Tuesday
THOUGH not entirely impressive, two of Trinidad and Tobago’s fighters saved the face for the English-speaking Caribbean countries on the opening day of the third Pan American Games Boxing Qualifier on Tuesday night at Chaguaramas Convention Centre.
Middleweight Andrew Fermin scored a 12-8 points victory over Colombian Monroy Jeisoin and two fights later his countryman Denzil Salazar whipped Juanerge Castillo of the Dominican Republic 23-13.
Another T&T pugilist, Aaron Cumberbatch was not as fortunate as his partners, as he failed miserably against William Urina, of Colombia, in the very first fight of the tournament.
Cumberbatch held his own only in first round but afterwards it was all Urina, as the visiting fighter scored continuously without being hit.
The referee stopped the contest at the end of the third round because Cumberbatch was outscored by his opponent by 20 points (25-5).
Fermin, a southpaw, was featured in a close contest with Jeison and only gained the verdict with an improved performance in the fourth and final round.
After the first three rounds ended 4-2 (Fermin), 4-3 (Fermin) and 7-7, Jeison got carless while trying to force the pace and the home boy capatalised on his mistakes by outscoring his opponent 5-1 in the final round.
Salazar also picked up the tempo in the last round against Castillo, inspite of not taking advantage of the slow movements of his opponent.
Scores at the end of the rounds in that fight were 4-3, 8-5, 15-11 and finally 23-13, all in favour of the Trinidadian.
Guyanese Ray Sanford (57 kg) and Leon Carter (69 kg) failed to get past the first round, as did Bahamian Levar Stewart (64 kg), Dominica’s Shannah Robin (81 kg) and Vincentian Dexter Anthony (91 kg).
Boxers from Argentina kept a clean sheet with Maximiliano Marquez, Jesus Cuellar, Patricio Pitto and Marcelo Ponce all recording wins.
Cuellar, the youngest of the lot, was outstanding against Guyanese Sanford. He exhibited quick foot-speed and reflexes and switched from conventional to southpaw whenever the need arised.
Canada had mixed fortunes with Isho Shiba beating Bone Banguera of Ecuador, Adam Trupish getting the better of Guyana’s Carter and Francy Ntetu getting a walkover over Peru’s Pedro Calla.
Kevin Bizier was the only Canadian unable to advance, as he was outpointed 20-18 by Mexican Luis Grajeda in the closest fight of the night.
Competition will take a break today (rest day) and will resume tomorrow, rounding off with finals on Saturday night.

Wednesday afternoon story and results
CABA silver medalist Aaron Prince “gave away” a chance to advance to the second round of the Pan American Games Boxing Qualifier yesterday at Chaguaramas Convention Centre in Chaguaramas.
But his countryman Andrew Fermin achieved what he failed to do by turning back Canadian Francy Ntetu to put one foot into the door of competing in the Pan Am Games in July in Brazil.
Prince’s waiting attitude cost him the fight against Jamaican Shawn Wheatle, who won the bout 9-7 on points in a low-scoring affair.
From the first bell, it was evident that Prince waited too long to get his combinations together.
Only at the beginning of the fourth and final round when he took the lead for the first time (7-6) did he look like overturning Wheatle. But he went back into his shell, allowing his opponent the chance to get three points without scoring any.
Fermin, who on Tuesday night defeated Colombian Monroy Jeison 12-8 on points, had to deal with a taller and stronger Ntetu in order to gain his second consecutive victory.
Many times during the bout Fermin failed to take advantage of openings that appeared when Ntetu came up short with his punches.
Several times the fight looked like a wrestling match as Fermin was physically thrown around the ring by Ntetu.
Apart from Wheatle, also victorious for Jamaica was featherweight Nicholas Walters, who whipped Otoniel Ortiz of the US Virgin Islands, convincingly 31-15.
Another Jamaican, Kevin White went under 15-18 to Oscar Rivera of El Salvador.
Guyanese fighters continued to disappoint when Markember Pierre fell 23-6 on points to Carlos Gongora, the Ecuadorian who was winning his sec ond fight in the tournament.
Also finding himself on the losing end was Barbadian Omar Ward. He lost 29-11 on points to southpaw Orlando Rizo of Nicarigua.
Jesus Cuellar, of Argentina, again showed his class by coming from behind to stop Canadian Ghisiain Muduma in a close contest. He won 16-11, after trailing for three rounds.

Local fighters taste defeat
By WALTER ALIBEY Friday, April 27 2007
CARIBBEAN welterweight amateur boxing champion Aaron Hassette was on Wednesday night surprisingly booted out of the Third Pan American Games Qualifiers at the Chaguaramas Convention Centre, Chaguaramas.
Hassette was defeated by Jamaica’s Ricardo Smith in a key four-bout contest to end his chance of securing a place in the Pan Am Games which is scheduled for Rio de Janiero, Brazil in July.
Hassette, the lanky Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force boxer tipped to be a certain participant at the Pan Am Games suffered a shocking 19-11 defeat.
Smith also got the better of Hassette when they met at last year’s Caribbean Amateur Boxing Association Championship at the same venue.
Hassette seemed to have been pinned down for most of the allotted four rounds as Smith scored points at will with his left jabbs.
The local boxer found himself trailing after the first two rounds but despite his attempt to recover, Smith kept him at bay with his effective jabbs.
The talented Jamaican will now move on to face Tuereano Johnson of the Bahamas in one of 20 fights today.
Johnson scored the only knockout of the competition when he sent Canadian Adam Trupish to the canvas after only one minute, 50 seconds in the first round. The Bahamian’s powerful right punch caught Trupish on the chin and sent him staggering to the floor.
Trupish had to be given treatment to revive from the stunning blow.
Hassette was one of three local fighters failing to advance passed the early stage of the Pan Am qualifiers.
The others were heavyweight Denzil Salazar and lightweight Jules De Gannes.
Salazar had only himself to blame as he went down to Marcelo Ponce of Argentina by one point 20-19. De Gannes was a mismatch in the other contest, thrashed by another Argentinian Luis Rueda by an embarassing 28-3 score.
In this contest the referee was called upon to stop the fight with De Gannes trailing by the ridiculous scoreline (28-3) in the fourth and final round.
Salazar on the other hand had a much more realistic chance of a victory but faded in the final round.
The scores had been close for both fighters entering the fourth round when Ponce turned on a moment of heat to earn the win.
Jamaica, unlike Trinidad and Tobago, collected another victory during the night of competition with Gerrington Richards advancing at the expense of Dominican Lestes Brazil.
Again the referee was called upon to bring the fight to a premature end when the agressive Richards left his opponent defenceless.
Meanwhile Eliecer Gonzalaz of Puerto Rico recorded the highest punch statistic of the tournament thus far landing 45 shots in his victory.
He defeated Colombian Ronald Montes 45-26 and excited the crowd. Grenada picked up their first win in the competition when Jewel Lewis got the better of Guyana’s Aubrey Moore 7-6 in a lightweight contest.
And John Jackson of the US Virgin Islands (USVI) showed he will be a difficult contender in the junior-welterweight category when he whipped Mervin Lantan of Dominica.
The talented Jackson had a clear-cut victory over Lantan with a display of combination shots to the head and body regularly.
The (semi) finals of the different categories will take place today.
Results:
(60kg); Jewel Lewis (Gre) bt Aubrey Moore (Guy) pts 7-6.
Luis Rineda (Arg) bt Jules de Gannes (TT) RSC 4th Round.
Noel Lopez (Mex) bt Valentino Knowles (Bah) pts 27-4.
(69kg): John Jackson (ISV) bt Mervin Lantan (DMA) RSC 3rd round.
Eliecer Gonzalez (Pur) bt Ronald Montes (Col) pts 45-26.
Ricardo Smith (Jam) bt Aaron Hassette (TT) PTS 19-11.
Tureano Johjnson (Bah) bt Adam Trupish (Can) 1st Rd KO 1:50 secs.
(91kg): Julio Deivis (Col) bt Ismael mMendonza (NCA) 21-9.
Gerrington Richards (Jam) bt Lestes Brazil (DMA) RSC 3rd round.
Jorge Quinones (Ecu) bt Evan Nedd (Aru) 27-8
Marcelo Ponce (Arg) bt Denzil Salazar (TT) 20-19.

As far as Canada is concerned - Their is no structure, poor leadership, no funding etc. The athletes get very little International experience, the National Team members have to pay their way, or a portion of, to the very few that they are entered in. If we can not qualify a team for the Pan Am games, how are we going to qualify anyone for the Olympics? What happened to the National Coach, the training camps, leadership working on funding, sponsorship? All these things are holding us back. We have good coaches and athletes in Canada. They are getting dicouraged, many are turning to professional boxing. Even our best featherweight went to Miami to possibly sign a pro deal and we lost our only medalist from the Commonwealth Games to the pros. Come on Boxing Canada - get your shit together, so we can once again be proud of our Team!

Friday night boxing results
TRINIDADand Tobago’s boxing fans finally got something to cheer about in the very last fight tonight (Fri) at Chaguaramas Convention Centre in Chaguaramas.
Burly policeman Enoch Romeo sent the local supporters in a frenzy as he pounded out a 15-11 points victory over Emmanuel Augustama of Haiti to loud chants of “Romeo, Romeo, Romeo”.
After trailing in the first two rounds (0-2 and 1-4), Romeo drew level 7-7 in the third round and did just enough to stave off the challenge of the Haitian.
The disappointing display by T&T’s fighters continued in the first bout of the night when Klevon de Noon did little againstClive Atwell, of Guyana. He lost 17-9 on points.
Continuing in the same trent as his previous countrymen, de Noon’s work-rate left much to be desired and it was no surprise to see him on the losing end.
De Noon needed a knockout in the fourth and final round. While he did connect with a couple of punches in a barrage it was not good enough to put Atwell down.
With the T&T fans having little to cheer about until Romeo came to the rescue, they turned their attention to classy John Jackson of the US Virgin Islands.
The adopted Jackson was featured in a”grudge match” against Eliecier Gonzalez of Puerto Rico.
Beaten by Gonzalez last year at home, Jackson, who is being trained by his father, former world champion Julian Jackson, avenged the defeat with a solid performance. He won on points 26-17.
Young Jackson, who upped his record to 16 wins with three defeats, was the aggressor from the first bell. He led at the end of all four rounds – 7-2, 15-8, 21-15 and 26-17.
The 18-year-old will be facing the tough Tureano Johnson, of Bahamas, in tomorrow’s (Sat) final.
Johnson established himself as a knockout artist, battering Jamaican hopeful Ricardo Smith into submission.
Following his impressive first round knockout over Canada’s Adam Trupish on Wednesday, Johnson unleashed a powerful right uppercut flush to the face of Smith, who went down one one knee, after 1:11 of the second round.
After taking a standing eight-round, Smith, who was responsible for eliminating local hero Aaron Hassette, stood in shock as the referee stopped the contest in order for to prevent further punishment. Blood flowed from both his nostrils and mouth.

THREE Trinidad and Tobago boxers head a list of 13 Caribbean fighters to qualify for the Pan Am Games in Brazil in July, following the end of the Pan American Boxing Qualifier today (Sat) at Chaguaramas Convention Centre in Chaguaramas.
The trio are super-heavyweight Enoch Romeo, middleweight Andrew Fermin and bantamweight Klevon de Noon.
Although all three fighters failed to win gold medals, they did enough to be among the top fighters in their respective categories.
For his two wins, Fermin was adjudged the best T&T fighter in the one-week tournament. He scored two wins – one over Monroy Jeison of Colombia and Francy Ntetu of Canada..
Fermin eventually lost to eventual gold medalist Ecuador’s Carlos Gongora.
It was because of the defeat to Gongora he got the nod over Oscar Rivera of El Salvador.
Only two Jamaicans Nicholas Walters (a gold medal winner in the featherweight division) and Ricardo Smith (bronze medalist in the welterweight division) made it to compete in Brazil.
Guyanese Lucas Navarro and Ryan Jeffers (flyweight) and Clive Atwell (bantamweight) secured places while John Jackson and Hugh Meonaar qualified for the US Virgin Islands.
Lone Grenadian will be Jewel Lewis while Haiti’s Wilky Compfort will be his country;’s lone representative.
Tureno Johnson, one of the stars in the series, was the only fighter from the Bahamas to qualify.
INSPITE of witnessing three fights less due to walkovers, boxing fans could not feel cheated as they got their money’s worth today (Sat) at the closing of the third Pan American Boxing Qualifier at Chaguaramas Convention Centre in Chaguaramas.
Not even the poor showing by lone Trinidad and Tobago fighter, super-heavyweight Enoch Romeo was enough to be of major concern for them, since making the final secured his place for the Pan Am Games in Brazil from July 13 to 29.
Romeo failed to shine against Puerto Rican Gerardo Bishel and at the end of the second round the referee stopped the contest because the Trinidadian was outscored by 20 points (20-0).
In an all-Caribbean showdown worth seeing over and over, the experienced Tureano Johnson, a knockout artist from the Bahamas, was carried the full distance by the promising 18-year-old John Jackson of the US Virgin Islands, before winning 23-16 to snatch gold in the welterweight division.
“It was beyond hard, “ Johnson, a six-time Caribbean champion, said right after the bout. “It was harder than I expected. I honestly felt that it would be easier.”
With the Pan Am Games in two months time, the World Championships in November and the 2008 Olympics in China on his mind, Johnson said: “I am proud of him (Jackson). The youngster came out with a plan and showed no respect for me.”
For the 23-year-old it was the first time in the week-long tournament he was taken the full distance – he knocked out Olympian Adam Trupish, of Canada, in the first round and battered Jamaica’s Ricardo Smith inter submission in the third round.
A fighter with over 250 fights under his belt, Johnson, who is based both in his homeland and Cuba, took the fight to Jackson, a boxer with just 19 fights (16 wins and three losses).
As customary, Johnson came out hungry from the opening bell in search of an early knockout. With no other fighter in the tournament able to test him, he was shocked when Jackson matched him toe-to-toe for three rounds.
Needing a huge fourth round, Johnson rose to the occasion, especially when Jackson drew level at 14-14 in the opening moments.
From that point onwards it was all the Cuban-coached fighter as he rattled up eight consecutive points to secure the victory.
Colombian fighters started with a bang, winning the first two bouts on the scheduled 11-fight card.
First, Oscar Negrete led from start to finish and was never in danger of losing to John Corona of El Salvador in the bantamweight division final. He won most of his 20 points from the one-two combination to the head of his opponent, who was accredited with only 13 scoring shots.
Countryman William Urina followed immediately and his Nicariguan opponent Henry Maldonado was no match for him. He was ahead 29-8 at the end of the flyweight contest.
Urina scored 13 points in the second round and nine in the third, most of them coming from clean punches, which didn’t have the power to put Maldonado away.
Urina was also in no mood to mix-it up and kept his man in sight, and at an arms length, all the time.
Argentian fighters trried to take up where their Colombian counterparts left off but were stopped in their tracks by Jamaican featherweight Nicholas Walters, whose endurance and never-say-die attitude gave him an upset win over Argentina’s Jesus Cuellar 10-9 on points.
Just before the Walters-Cuellar fight, Maruez Maximiliano (Argentina) won the gold medal in the bantamweight category by defeating Guyana’s Clive Atwell 14-12 on points.
Maximiliano was forced to work overtime, as he was pressured by Atwell right up to the final bell.
Atwell held his own against the Argentine and often reminded his man that he was in a fight and not a stroll in the park.
