Murray unsurprised at ‘joker’ Khan’s knock-back

Image

Hennessy Sports promoted John Murray is not surprised that his British lightweight rival Amir Khan rejected an offer to fight him this Saturday on potentially the biggest event in boxing history, despite the Olympic Silver medalist’s false claim that he ‘played’ with him in sparring.

Undefeated Manchester star Murray, 22, will have his 21st professional fight on the undercard of the highly anticipated showdown between Oscar de la Hoya, his US co-promoter, and Floyd Mayweather at the MGM Grand.

Murray's team-mate John O'Donnell, the English Welterweight champion, will also feature. ‘The Golden One,’ who has strong Irish heritage, boxes Mexico’s Christian Solano over ten rounds.

The opponent for Murray, who impressed US fight fans after impressively outpointing Johnny Walker on the Lacy-Reid undercard in Florida in 2005, is set to be announced shortly.

The history making WBC World Youth Lightweight champion would have liked to have seen Khan in the opposite corner, particularly after his recent comments in the press, but he rejected the opportunity to make his US debut. Instead Khan faces Commonwealth champion Willie Limmond later this summer.

“I think Khan’s a complete joker,” said Murray. “He makes all these claims and then won’t back them up. I’m still waiting for an answer. When and where was this spar meant to have happened? It’s a fairy tale.

“If he thinks he can play with me, he may as well prove it. If you listened to him it would be a mismatch, but that shouldn’t be a problem. I don’t reckon he’s fought a live opponent yet.

“His next fight looks like another easy touch to me. He knows I'm a tougher fighter than Willie Limmond. He has fought once in almost a year and a half, is really a super-featherweight and doesn't hit hard. Amir is too big for Limmond.

"I’m not surprised he didn’t want to fight me over here, or anywhere else for that matter. I believe he’s all talk. My promoter Mick Hennessy has told them that we want the fight and that it can happen further down the line, all he has do is step up to the plate.

“In the meantime I’m going to continue a proper apprenticeship. I’m doing things the right way, where as other lightweight prospects in Britain are just fighting fringe fighters who are there in front of them to be bashed up.”

Murray has been training in the same Los Angeles gym that Oscar de la Hoya has been using since arriving in America. The Golden Boy Promotions and Hennessy Sports teams relocate to Vegas tonight.

“This is what prospects should be doing," said Murray, who is soaking up the atmosphere in America. "The experience I will be getting by boxing on such a big show will stand me in good stead for the future. I'm only 22 and there aren't many fighters who have got this experience at this point in their careers.

"There aren't many other fighters from Britain fighting over here full stop. John and I want to show the world there are two great British fighters coming through.”

“The media attention will be massive for this event. So we will be looking to put on a great performance and shine in front of everyone. We have both been on fire in the gym.

"There will be a bit of nerves in there but that will make me better on the night. I've fought in America before and the occasion brought the best out of me. It made me sharp and I'm going to want to knock my opponent out on May 5th.”

i dont really think Murray can comment on Khan's oppenants until he steps up himself.

has murray even got an oppenant yet ?

fair enough before the Limmond fight but now it has been announced his comments arnt justified.

Limmond has got 2/3 months to prepare for Khan so that also makes him a far more difficult oppenant to who ever Murray fights with about 5 days preperation

Khan was talking shit and a bit ignorant, but in fairness Warren said what's the point when the Murray fight is on the bottom of the bill with no one watching?

The fight is a long way off and we all know it but Warren has talked of getting Khan to fight on a US bill and surely this is as good a one as any? Would have been good experience cause he isn't going to be headlining in Vegas anytime soon.

Khan would of exposed Murray anyway, Khan's speed would be bad news for Murray who also gets bruised up by African level fighters Warren gets for his commonwealth fights sometimes.

Limond's a bigger step up anyway but If Khan wins the commonwealth Murray would be a good first defence.

Murray hasn;t stepped up beyond fighting Journymen level fighters either after 20 fights yet Khan's going for the Commonwealth In his 13th.

The Americans would not care for Khan Vs Murray on the Undercard though as they'd only be going for DLH and Mayweather.

Most of the ticket buyers will be at the bars while these two would be fighting If It happened anyway.

Warren was mentioning putting Khan on the undercard of a big US bill to gain him experience not help sell tickets.

Didn't Khan say that he was going to the fight on May 5th? Would be nice to see a ringside showdown!

These two should put their money where their mouths are because while they talk the talk there's a 23 year old WBA Lightweight champion called Juan Diaz who's walking the walk.

You lot are out of your minds
Murray and Kahn would be televised if Kahn would have agreed
Warren has excuses for any scenario that would come up. He wants no part of John and to make matters worse they lie about John sparing
What a complete clown!!!

Murray is well known in America, he looked great in Tampa and Montreal a few years ago. I think this will be a coming out party for Young Murray.
When he has to perform he does ( i.e.Nacho Mendoza)
That lad was a right handful and Murray put on a great show.
Murray's a true fighter and has potential to be in some terrific fights.
His style will allow for nothing less!
I for one am a real believer and wish Murray good luck on the card.
The world boxing media will be there and it's a perfect opportunity for John to shine

what about putting him in with a yank fighter? if no one is going to watch it might as well make it a foreign fighter anyway....

Vicente Escobedo? older but similar record?

Ameth Diaz? Known Quantity?

Manuel Garnica? Another known quantity?

Nasty thought.... when would Khan be ready for Emmanuel Augustus?

Khan runs his mouth, Murray steps up, Khans runs away.

Khan won’t fight someone like Murray for a very long time. Another 10 fights or so. Or until allegedly and Khan can't milk anyone for any more money. Unlike anyone who Khan has ever fought Murray actually has a chance of winning.

Limmond is a step up in class but a very small step up in class. He's still a none punching super-featherweight.

No offence but you sound very biased towards anything to do with Hennessy In your posts.

The fights Sunday morning and he still doesn't have an opponent.

Plus Khan's already stepping up past John for the Commonwealth title.

The world boxing media will mostly be up DLH and Mayweather's arse, Murray will be lucky to even get a tiny corner mention In any boxing column that night.

Why knock Murray when Khan is the one who called him out, If he is so confident he shouyld have bloody fought him.
Khan is going to be another top British fighter who never takes a risk more than once or twice in his entire career, Just like most of the other Warren fighters.

Face facts mate- Khan called him out and falsely claimed he had sparred with him. That is embarrassing. Now he wont fight him. If Khans the best, PROVE IT!!

Well I did say I was displeased with Joe fighting Manfredo and the WBU title mess as Derry should be the real British title holder.

I do agree with alot of Sports Network tatics but not totally.

Box Office has never said a bad thing about Hennessy.

What 'offer' was made to Khan.

Come over to Vegas and fight me on another Promoters show. Err hardly a serious offer is it? I don't recall any cash being discussed or any Promoter making the offer.

I am sure the promoters would have been chuffed being landed with that cost for a matinee fight especially when they have sold out every ticket and CC venue, sold the main event to all worldwide major TV networks in all major countries and already grossed the highest amount of any non-heavyweight of not any fight ever.

From a business point of view Khan agsint Murray is hardly a sound financial move is it? Sure it's a big fight but not yet and not on this show or in the US.

Bit like Chelsea playing Man Utd before the Superbowl snd wondering why no one cares over there.

Khan has more clout in nthe US than MUrray so why is Murray acting like the paymaster. Has he been on US TV yet, he won't be this weekend that's for sure.

Let's be fair boxinchat, Hennessy were just doing their job at PR, Khan has already called Murray out, and they were just trying to trumpet the fact that their man was appearing on the DLH bill, I would fully expect SN to do precisely the same.

It's sabre rattling, it's not as if Hennessy seriously expected Warren to say to Khan "Off you go lad, off you go and fight on their bill, I'm not bothered.." now is it?"

I can't believe we're discussing who started it but Khan's people released a press statement stating to his British rivals fight me now before i'm far too good for you or something like that. Which prompted Earl, Murray and Gomez to call him out, to which Khan pretty much said he doesn't need to fight Murray as he handled him in sparring and everyone knows who would win.

We all know the fight was never going to happen on the undercard of De La Hoya v Mayweather but that statement that he doesn't need to fight him as we know he'd win was never going to come across well.

Boxingchat, i'm sure there were noises made about sending Khan over for a fight in the US, is this still the case or would it only be on the undercard of a Calzaghe superfight should he ever fight over there.
