106 Luis Yanez (look for Luis Lozano, and Charles Martin).
112 Aaron Alafa or Qa'id Muhammad ( look for Barry Dennis, and Louie Padilla).
119 Jorge Diaz (Teddy Padilla, Samy Dipace ).
125 Luis Ramos or Del Valle ( Hylon Williams in the mix ).
132 Stan M. or Jerry Belmontes ( the dark horse will be Miguel Gonzales ).
141 Jeremy Bryan.
152 Demetrius Andrade.
165 Shawn Porter ( Edwin Rodriguez ).
178 William Rosinsky.
201 Jorda Shimmell or Isiah Thomas.
201+ Feliz Stewart.
Hugo - nice predictions. I'm not sure you can call Miguel Gonzales a dark horse with his past experience. It will be interesting to see how well DiPace does in the open class. He has talent. Ramos and DelValle have both looked strong, but there are some other tough boxers in that weight class.
I'm looking for the Michigan team to do well. It is a young, but talented team with all of the boxers having experience in national tournaments.
Post after the 1st rounds are complete and see if anything changes.

I don't think Charles Martin has the experience to go all the way. He's fairly green. He's going in the Army in June and hopefully will make the WCAP once he's through with basic training. Will definitely be interesting to see how Sammy does in the open division. I'm not a Padilla brothers fan and Luis Ramos lost in his first bout.
Interesting results so far. A lot of close fights at 165 and a rough draw to put Edwin Rodriguez and Jonathan Nelson against each other in the first round.
At heavy, it is noticable of course that Dennis' son was beaten by Tyrell Wright - but even more noticable was Deontay Wilder's 11 second stoppage of Mario Marales. Can that be right? I know amateur refs have a twitchy TKO finger, but he must have just crushed him with one of his first punches.
Here's an article on yesterday's fights from the Chattanooga paper. It says that Wilder won with two jabs and two right hands.
Wilder is an interesting prospect from Tuscaloosa. He's been stopping a lot of opponents in less than a minute, and he's only been boxing for two years. He's been alternatively listed as 6-7 or 6-9, but on video he doesn't look anywhere near that tall, maybe 6-5 or so. He also has a young daughter with spina bifida, and drives a delivery truck. Seems like an easy guy to root for and with a ton of potential.
At the bottom of this page, you can see one of his very short preliminary GG fights against a fighter from Georgia.
Our referees stop bouts for many reasons, all of them safety related. It's entirely possible that Wilder so totally overwhelmed his opponent that the ref felt Morales had no chance to defend himself or remain competitive. It was an RSC, not an RSCH. We'll see how Wilder's potential plays out as he moves up the bracket against more experienced competition.

Hi Mel, so what do you think about the rest of the divisions.
Unfortunately, Hugo, USA Boxing has taken the entries off their web site so I can't look through the weights and see who I would pick. There are many names I don't recognize and I would probably have to go mostly with those boxers I know and have seen and/or who have a good amount of experience. I'm not really counting on any of the boxers who just came out of the JOs, since this will be their first open tournament. But, then again, you never know. Along with everyone else, I'll be watching with great interest.
I do have to say I think it's a real shame that the Golden Gloves won't use the electronic scoring system. Every other national tournament does and I think it's more fair than the clickers.

Where is Preston fighting out of now?
Don't sleep on Johnathon Guidry. He is a super heavyweight who fights out of my gym in Louisiana. He won the 2006 ringside as a noive. He has the talent but lacks the expierence, but lets see. He has major heart!
He will face Erik Correa of Chicago in the opening round.
domoqnuie dolton from detroit beat marcus willis from florida and that guy lost to kieth thurman only by 1 point at the pals so domoqnuie did a great job and gerg coverson won at 132

And just how did you determine that the decisions were shady? Were you actually judging or just watching from one point of view? Do you know that with the computer system we can see if any judges are cheating, i.e., pushing the button for one boxer only, or trying to pile up points for one corner? There is no way you can determine what a judge is doing with the clickers because you can't see when he or she is pushing the button or who for. The computer system also has a built in cheating report that can be generated if necessary. I am definitely going to agree to disagree with you on this topic!
