Some US / Europe fights to look forward too.

Post by stujones »

Just been looking at the schedules... not sure if any of these will be shown in the UK but there are some good ones in the states between now and September.

16th May... Glenn Johnson vs Montell Griffin. Eliminator for Clinton Woods' belt.

Steve Johnston whose looking okay back at Lightweight faces the tough Humberto Toledo in what looks a 50:50 match up on 18th May.

Spinks vs Taylor and a cracking undercard (Pavlik vs Miranda, Vernon Forrest vs Carlos Baldomir) on the 19th. Sky are showing this!

Katisidis vs Guzman, Larios vs Linares 26th May.

Ossie Duran gets a chance to shine on Showtime on the 1st June vs James Kirkland.

Briggs vs Sultan Ibragimov 2nd June

Cotto vs Judah, Humberto Soto vs Bobby Pacquiao 9th June. Also relevant cause Tommy Morrison is scheduled to appear - this is not in some dodgy state but the MSG.

9th June... Antonio Tarver vs Elvier Muriqi, Chad Dawson vs Jesus Ruiz, Vic Darchinyan vs TBA. Tarver is fighting for his IBO belt which he LOST last time.

16th June... Looking forward to this one. Lovemore Ndou vs Paulie Malignaggi (IBF Light Welter title).

23rd Hatton vs Castillo (yeah), Woods vs Gonzalez (no).

14th July - Cintron vs Matthyse (IBF Welter title), Arturo Gatti vs Alfonso Gomez.... perfect fight for both guys that one. If Gatti cannot beat Gomez well then it is over for him. If Gomez wins, he's then in the world title picture.

14th July - Margarito vs Paul Williams.... good one.

21st July - Hopkins vs Wright (no title, but good one).

21st July Jose Navarro vs Jhonny Gonzalez

4th August - David Diaz vs Erik Morales WBC Lightweight title.... Great send off for a great fighter. I think Morales will win this. A bit of a pitty it looks like he'll beat Barrera to being the first Mexican 4 weight champion.

September - Jaun Manuel Marquez vs TBA (probably Barrera).

Add these from Europe.

19th May Dzindiruk vs Nascimento... Never heard of Nascimento but he is big punching and undefeated.

26th May - Huck vs Tokarev (really looking forward too), Asikanen vs Sylvester 2, Abraham's return.

26th May Steve Cunnigham vs Wlod (whatever his name) 2, Andrew Golota's return.

16th June - Valery Brudov vs Friat Arslan (WBA Cruiser title).

16th June - Samil Sam vs Oliver McCall

7th July - Klitchsko vs Brewster 2 (could be a good one).

Yeah that will be a good one. Glen Johnson V Montell Griffin doesn't appeal to me on so many levels. If Johnson wins then we will see Woods-Johnson 4?? If Griffin wins then Clinton Woods versus ancient Montell Griffin. First he has a rematch with Julio Gonzalez, if ever an alphabelt was an anchor around a mans neck then this would be proof.

I've really gone off Guzman. I hated his last fight, which was messy and unwatchable. But if he pulls himself together and puts in a good show, it'll be worth him (or Katsidis) taking on Juan Diaz. After all, the fight is for the WBO interim which should take the winner to a shot vs Diaz.

Don't think David Diaz v Morales is a great sendoff. The WBC needed an excuse to strip Casamayor, so that Morales would have a chance to fight for a 4th world title. With Casa coming off a win over Corrales, 'Terrible' would get outclassed.

Definitely some top matchups though. I've got my eye on Tokarev-Huck as well.

Forrest v Baldomir has interesting implications. It's a WBC light middle elim. Sergio Martinez won a WBC elim last week at the same weight! I guess it gives the WBC a chance to make sanctioning fee money knowing that the Oscar-Floyd winner will never face them!

I have to say 4th July Margarito vs Paul Williams could be an absolute corker.

Interesting one that, I wasn't impressed with Williams last time out, maybe he wasn't focused enough. I think this might be another fight for Margarito where he breaks the man down, similar to when he fought Kermit Cintron.

what worries me about Guzman is that his weight hopping sounds more like it is a result of ill discipline rather than outgrowing weight divisions. To leap from 121 to 135 in only two years doesn't bode well especially since he hasn't been able to stop anyone since Agapito Sanchez in 2004.

However, Joan has a habit of fighting sloppy against opponents he knows he can beat, so perhaps his fight with Katsidis will bring the best out of him. If he manages to completely outclass Katsidis you'd have to say that would be a good result.

Disagree a tad there.

I think there is a need for Woods vs Johnson 4. In three great contests Johnson has won more rounds than Woods - but yet it is Woods with the title around his waist.

If Griffin beats Johnson, then surely he isn't all that ancient and could pose an interesting threat.

I thought Williams punch variation was very good last time out, he dominated and the fight should have been over long before the ref stopped it. How the ref let the fight go for so long baffled me, that N.Zealander couldve been seriously hurt there - does it reflect badly on Williams power? his motivation (late replacement wasnt he - paka) or was Paka (was it paka??) just a tough determined SOB?
Margarito on the other hand was being beaten handily by Clottey until the injury wasnt he ? Both guys are big at the weight, although I think Marga is stronger, whilst I'd say Williams has the better variation in his work. I'd love to see this one, the outcome will certainarly tell us a lot about both guys futures within the sport.

Pakau. And Williams was southpaw slapping like Tarver. Ugly as sin. Someone please knock this man out: he looks like a stinkbomb.

At welter I'm big on Cotto and Clottey. Cotto should dismantle Judah and then reduce what's left of Margarito to rubble (IMO Marg will get by Williams).

Cotto will take some hard shots early but he'll get over it. If Judder could tag Mayweather and Tszyu early he'll do the same to Cotto. But Cotto is top class in a dangerous fight. Loved his performance vs Quintana, a quality southpaw absolutely decimated.

Think Cotto might have his hands full with Judah, The first 3 rounds will be the most interesting , Judah does start very fast, and i'm not convinced on Cotto's chin early on in a fight, he seems to need a couple of rounds to get going.
If it ends early then i'm going for Judah , if it goes beyond 4 rounds then Cotto will win.

It is an interesting fight. Cotto was looking very vulnerable at light welter, but how much of that is attributable to leaving half of himself in the sauna?

Judah is a big hitter for a few rounds of course, and he's in with a shot of an early upset, but I fancy Cotto to come through any early problems to bust Judah up and stop him before the 10th.

Cotto's going to be around for a long time. I think he saves himself for more dangerous fights. So if he wasn't 100% for Urkal, he will be for Judah. I hate it that ppl say, 'Cotto didn't look good v Urkal, Judah will desroy him.'

We really need some new life in the light heavy division. Enough with these retreads of Johnson and Griffin.

Some people don't agree with that Mikee. Some people thought he beat Woods for the 3rd time.

It seems that its all very well to strip Johnson for fighting Jones and Tarver (both former IBF champions) but very bad for the WBC to strip Casamayor for not fighting anyone (see other thread).

I wonder if Graham Earl or Jon Thaxton were WBC #1 would we be complaining about it.
