You would need to put all the stats into a computer and I bet even then you couldnt find an outright winner anymore than from an unbiased human being - Barry McGuigan seems to have chosen his all time best (Calzaghe)- However ITV are doing the big sell of Joe Calzaghe so its hardly surprising Barry is nominating him as the best British fighter of all time - I think its pretty easy to pick fighters who dont fit the bill but eliminating the best contenders to find one that stands out is another matter - Even if you have a top 10 people will argue why so and so wasnt included - Its just opinion and I dont believe you can pick a best ever - Look at Micheal Schumaker in F1 7 times world champion who broke nearly every record that was ever made, yet some argue Ayton Senna was a better driver and in a few years time that status could be switched to Fernando Alonso or even Louis Hamilton - So Im going to box clever here and say I dont think anybodys choice will be Audley Harrison but Names like Calzaghe, Hatton,Winston, Minter, Benn, Hammed etc ect might.

I'd agree with McGuigan saying Joe Is due to no British fighter ever being as talented as Joe has been regardless of opposition.

Theirs been some good ones and all time greats but not that dominant or aggressive or that different from the typical British style of fighting.

Pat Cowdell was, in my opinion, the best British boxer never to win a world title. When you consider what he did as an amateur, Commonwealth gold, ABA champion, European and Olympic bronze. If the Salvador Sanchez fight had have been a 12-rounder then Pat would have won the WBC title.

Anyway, that’s going off topic.

But I’m going for Kenny Buchanan as the best British boxer of all-time. He was one hell of a fighter.

With respect I have to strongly disagree, I like Pat Cowdell but I think Jim Driscoll ind Owen Moran were much better fighters and they never won a real World Title. There is also a strong argument to rate Jock McAvoy and Dave Charnley above Cowdell on this matter.

Of course, we are all entitled to our opinions - hence why i put in my opinion. But my point was on the basis of such a strong amateur career and such a heroic performance against all-time great Salvador Sanchez.

Also, he was the best pure boxer never to win a world title from this country. Pat wasn’t a puncher, which is what held him back. allegedly has been quoted on his site as saying that Pat was the best boxer he has ever worked with.

But, yes, those you have mentioned were equally worthy of such praise.

it's IMMPOSSIBLE to say with All Certainty, there are just too many factors both considered and Not considered. KOJOE has 3 very good names mentioned and yet to call them the best wouldn't be right!

Over at the CBZ there's an argument right now about SRR being the best p4p fighter ever...good candidate but IMMPOSSIBLE to say.

here are Gilbert Odds top 10 British MW's
1 Randolph Turpin; 2. Jock McAvoy; 3. Len Harvey; 4. Ted 'Kid' Lewis; 5. Terry Downes; 6. Tommy Milligan; 7. Ernie Roderick; 8. Roland Todd; 9. Pat McAteer;10. Johnny Sullivan..

Considerations... Len Harvey was a L-HW and Britains best at that weight, Ted 'Kid' Lewis was a Welterweight and Britains best at the weight, likewise Ernie Roderick was a Welterweight and probably in the top 3 at that weight. Randolph Turpin was NOT better than Jock McAvoy - "hands down" and you have to include such fighters like Jack Casey, Len Johnson (some would say Tops), Bert Gilroy, Ginger Sadd, Dick Turpin and tough guy Harry Scot... then there's the modern bunch Benn, Watson and company.

and what about all the other weights, I always said Don't single achievements, look at 'head to head' battles with the Best Champions & Contenders who remained at the Top for extended periods and proved their worth, jumping in & out of weight divisions successfully...these are the best.

But to say with All Certainty, very, very Hard!

Ted kid Lewis, Len Harvey, Benny Lynch, Peter Kane, Eric Boon, Jock McAvoy, Tommy Farr, Bruce Woodcock and plenty, plenty more...

The two outstanding candidates for me are Lewis and Wilde.

The ring done a piece on this last year with Britains all time top 50 fighters...it had Lewis first followed by the awesome Wilde.

If it was in Ring magazine I'd assume it was Lennox can't see them putting Ted first.
