Pretending I'm not watching the results - my best guess on the winners/top boxers:
106 - Luis Yanez
112 - Aaron Alafa, Qa'id Muhammad
119 - Up for grabs - coming out of the JOs: Sammy DiPace; old-timer David Clark.
125 - Luis Del Valle
132 - Stan Martyniouk, Saddam Ali
141 - Jeremy Bryan
152 - Demetrius Andrade, Charles Hatley; coming out of JOs: Oscar Molina.
165 - Edwin Rodriguez, Shawn Porter
178 - Pick 'em
201 - Pick 'em
201+ - Pick 'em

No, I didn't think it was an upset Mel, but I'm impressed that Hatley dominated him to such a degree, given, as you said, Rivera's experience.
Francisco wins Golden Glove debut - Chattanooga Times Free-Press
Carter tops Jackson at 152 - Chattanooga Times Free-Press
UT's Scott tends to boxers - Chattanooga Times Free-Press
Golden Gloves look ahead - Chattanooga Times Free-Press
The last tidbit has Rodriguez and Porter fighting today, which has a good chance of deciding the winner at 165.
The TFP also has a really well produced video about local fighter Joseph Francisco deciding to cut weight to 112 after he was upset in the Southern Qualifier at 125. It has some really nice backstage footage of the tournament.

Not a good idea to cut from 125 down to 112. I've heard that the boxer had to receive an IV to get rehydrated and now he is "losing weight" (i.e. water) to try to make 112 again. I hope he does not get seriously hurt. Heart problems do occur from severe dehydration as do other serious health problems.emile wrote:The TFP also has a really well produced video about local fighter Joseph Francisco deciding to cut weight to 112 after he was upset in the Southern Qualifier at 125. I agree with you Dennis. What if he made the Trials at 112 - he would have to really hurt himself to keep trying to make that weight. But, this was the only way he could get in to the GG's in his hometown. Until they make some sort of body mass index to create minimum weights for fighters, guys are going to do this. You can't blame Joseph.
How is Jordan's elbow Dennis? Is it a serious injury or something that will be fine soon? Any thoughts on my guy Deontay Wilder?

Jordan injured his left arm in the beginning of the first round and could not use his jab. It all starts with the jab. He tried to win without it, but fell short losing a 4-1 decision. I predicted Danny Calhoun would defeat Tyrell Wright in the next round of the tourney since Jordan boxed Calhoun in the MW trials.emile wrote:Interesting results so far. A lot of close fights at 165 and a rough draw to put Edwin Rodriguez and Jonathan Nelson against each other in the first round.
At heavy, it is noticable of course that Dennis' son was beaten by Tyrell Wright - but even more noticable was Deontay Wilder's 11 second stoppage of Mario Marales. Can that be right? I know amateur refs have a twitchy TKO finger, but he must have just crushed him with one of his first punches.
Dang you are good. You knew about his elbow b/4 I had a chance to post. I'm not sure. I'm here in Chattanooga with other Michigan boxers while he is at home attending school so he can graduate in a few weeks. He is going to see the athletic trainer and then a doctor (the trainer can help get him an earlier appointment) to determine the best course of action. The problem is they usually want the RICE treatment (don't have much time to rest it). He just needs an MRI to make sure there is no tendon or ligament damage. If so, he will be out. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.emile wrote:I agree with you Dennis. What if he made the Trials at 112 - he would have to really hurt himself to keep trying to make that weight. Deontay Wilder - I missed his bout(s). I can say that he is NOT 6'9". Maybe 6'7". I'm 6'6" and he is about my height, maybe a hair shorter or a hair taller, but no way is he 6'9". I am going to try to watch his bout tonight. I'll be watching most of the 201 bouts tonight for coaching reasons - LOL.
I have some secret agents working for me in Chattanooga - no, actually it was mentioned in the Grand Rapids paper. :)Dennis wrote: Dang you are good. If I can quiz you again, how about Isiah Thomas? Did you see his fights - worth the hype?

Cutting weight sucks, to put it bluntly. Frankly, I blame the coach. Why jeopardize the boxer's health just so he "make it" outside of his normal weight? Makes no sense to me. I've seen coaches keep boxer's weights down just so they don't box the top or better boxers. Now, howinthehell can you get better if you don't box someone better than you?
I've known Isiah for a long time. He is a good boxer, however he has yet to prove to me that he can handle the strength and power of open-class boxers. Yesterday he won a 5-0 decision, but it was a close bout. Garcia seemed to give Isiah a tough time. A month ago, Jordan defeated Garcia by RSCO-3 while also giving Garcia several 8 counts during the bout. Isiah also benefited by wearing 10 oz gloves while Garcia was wearing the proper 12 oz gloves. I've seen the same thing happen at JO tourneys and the like. Referees are supposed to check the tags on the gloves, but sometimes they don't.emile wrote:I have some secret agents working for me in Chattanooga - no, actually it was mentioned in the Grand Rapids paper. :)Dennis wrote: Dang you are good. You knew about his elbow b/4 I had a chance to post. I'm not sure. I'm here in Chattanooga with other Michigan boxers while he is at home attending school so he can graduate in a few weeks.
If I can quiz you again, how about Isiah Thomas? Did you see his fights - worth the hype?
Back to Isiah - today he boxes David Imoesiri which may tell us a little more about him.

just got off the phone with Del Valle he told me he won again tonight and faces former jr olimpic champ tomorrow.
Did anybody see Luis yesterday's fight? he told me he gut hurt pretty bad and got an 8th count then got another 8 count from a slip but came back strong. Aparentlly it was a very dramatic fight.

Interesting results again, and its nice to see some new names filtering up. Wish I could watch this on TV.
Francisco (the hometown guy who moved down two weight classes) won by a real KO, accoridng to the news story. I'm wondering if he is somewhat physically dominant at that weight. Today's story also said he is only 5'4 and made it to 119 easily just by improving his diet, so maybe 112 is only sort of unhealthy for him rather than god-awful. Overall, 112 has a strong group left - too bad they all have Rau'Shee Warren in their way.
Hylon Williams vs Luis Del Valle at 125 is interesting. I haven't really heard of the guys on the other side of the draw, so that winner will probably be a big favorite to win the gold. Is this the coming out for the recent top juniors like Williams, Thomas, and DiPace?
Even usaboxing.org said Lee and Price at 132 were pretty much unknowns. Ali v Martyniouk will also likely produce the gold.
Great win for Andre Sherard at 141 over Jeremy Bryan. At 20, Sherard seems to be developing nicely and coming out of a city without a strong record of producing good fighters (Milwaukee), he must have a lot of natural talent. I'm intrigued by him.
Porter beats Rodriguez and Dominic Wade fails to live up to billing at 165. Wonder if Willie Monroe can hang with Porter? At 178, is it me or does William Rosinsky always get upset? He'll be 23 this year, and doesn't seem to be making any strides forward. Nothing personal, but I wan't to see someone with some upside potential make a run at the 178 Olympic spot.

Jordan was sick and yet only lost a 3-2 split. Isiah won a controversial 2-1 split over Lewis. Besides styles make fights. They may get the chance to match up in Colorado Springs. Remember, just because A beats B and B beats C does NOT mean that A will beat C. Jordan (albeit injured) lost to Wright, Jordan beat Calhoun and yet Calhoun beat Wright which is what I had expected. Danny Calhoun looked pretty good in beating a tough lefty in Anthony Tettis. He obviously can box a lefty.the_boxer wrote:i don't think jordan can beat siaih thomas, isiah beat the guy that beat jordan in the state tournamnet
