O/T BEER!

Post by jezzamundo »

I just noticed that one of the other threads had turned into a chat about beer, and I seeing as it is one of the major passions in my life, I could help but start a thread about it myself. Below are my preferences:

At home: I usually buy 6 packs, currently Coopers Pale Ale as it is the best beer I can buy relatively cheaply where I live at the moment at $14. Previously I used to get mostly James Squire Golden Ale which is really delicious, but a bit pricier.

In pubs: Little Creatues Pale Ale on tap is fantastic! Especially at Little Creatures brewery in Fremantle. If I'm somewhere that doesn't do it, I tend to get Kilkenny, or if I'm in the mood, Guinness. If I'm at the Belgian my favourites are Leffe Blonde and Belle Vue Kriek.

Of all the lagers (or pilsners) on the market, my favourites are: Hahn Premium Lager, Bohemian Pilsner and Pilsner Urquell.

I love beer :D

Tooheys Extra Dry or Hahn Premium, depending on price at the time.

For my 'light beer' preference...(being a responsible designated driver).
I like to drink Hahn Premium Light.

..... I'm breastfeeding at the moment (6 months to go) .... so i am hanging for the day i can sit down to a good icy cold beer whilst watching the boxing. :TU: :TU: :TU: :TU:

Stock standard beer for me is the classic Tooheys New. I don't mind a premium beer now and then (Coopers, Squires etc). Either way there is not much better than coming home from a hard day at work and opening a nice cold beer, if there happens to be some sport on it really tops it off :TU:

Here is how I rank the grand beer nations:

1. Czech beer
2. German beer -- especially from Bavaria
3. Irish beer
4. Belgian beer -- they put some strange stuff in there
5. English beer -- only for you if you like ale
6. American beer -- we still haven't recovered from prohibition.

This said, there is good Spanish beer, good Chinese beer, good Turkish beer, good Mexican beer, even in Cameroon I drank a very enjoyable local beer. All you need is one brewmaster who knows his stuff.

Australian beer? I only know Foster's, and that's nothing to write home about. Sure there must be better stuff.

Some Aussie beers are OK, a very small handful are nice, and the majority are terrible. But what alternative is there when you can pay up to $9 for a pint or $20 for a 6-pack of decent European beer?

That's Australia's biggest problem in this department - ridiculously expensive for anything even half-decent. I heard Asahi sells for $12 a pint in a central Melbourne pub.

No one in Australia drinks Fosters! It is one of the worst beers in the world, thats probably why we export it to the Brits

Hmm, I must disagree with your list. Czech Pilsners are excellent, probably the world's best, but I've yet to try a Czech beer that isn't a pils.
German beers are excellent, yes, but I believe one country does it better. I'm yet to try a bad Irish beer, although it did take a while for Guiness to grow on me. Belgium makes the best beer in the world IMO. Some are a little weird, but the majority are an excellent quality. The fact that Stella is probably the worst beer made in Belgium (and a good beer) says a lot. English beer varies a lot, some is bloody awful, but some of the ales are really interesting and tasty. American beer is hugely varied, most of the mainstream brands being poor, many of the smaller names being damn good. I'm yet to try beer from the other nations you mention, with the exception of Mexico. Corona is refreshing, but SO boring, whereas Dos Equis is refreshing and delicious.

Funny thing is, what we export to the Brits as Fosters is exactly the same as what we drink here as Crown Lager! I've had a pint whilst overseas, and thought, "Ahh, good to taste Aussie beer again", then suddenly remembered that Fosters is shit. It didn't make sense until I found out that we export the good stuff, and use the crap stuff over here seing as no one drinks Fosters here anyway.

I'm pretty sure they brew Fosters overseas now as well, not entirely sure about UK but definitely in Canada. I also heard that Fosters and Crown were 'from the same batch', something about they take the stuff off the top and call it Crown and the stuff down the bottom of the barrel they call Fosters (or vise versa). Personally I don't like either, so it doesn't make much difference to me...

There are some EXCELLENT Australian beers! Of the mainstream stuff, Hahn Premium Lager is really good, and not expensive. It is quite dark and characterful for a lager, and really good with food.

James Squires makes some fantastic beers. The pilsner is good, amber ale is very good (although I don't like the banana taste), golden ale is fantastic. The IPA is good, but a bit full-on for most, and the new Hop Thief is nice, but maybe a bit over-sweet. All James Squires beers can be bought for just Aus $14 for a 6 pack at good bottle shops.

Little Creatures for Fremantle is a bit pricier, but excellent. Their pilsner is kinda average, but the Rogers (best midstrengh ever!) and Bright Ale are very nice, and their Pale Ale is probably my favourite beer, really delicious.

There are also a lot of really good micro-breweries, but I'd be going on forever!

I don't know where you're buying your beer, but you have to tell me!!! Squires for $14 a six pack!?! That is a brilliant price! Their Strong Ale is probably my favourite but they're all good.

You also forgot to mention Coopers, they make a nice drop! But as you say you could go on forever...

I actually don't like Little Creatures, a bit too fruity for my liking.

I think midstrength is the worst idea ever! What is the point of it!?! Rubbish!

All this talk of beer, I think I might have to go and crack one right now :D :TU:

Where do you live? The best bottle shop I know is Bucks Off in Riverton, you can get all the Squires beers there for $13.99 for a 6 pack (or at least they were last time I was there, a few months ago, and it wasn't a special). At my local bottle shop they are $17.99, so they vary a lot.

You're right, I should have mentioned Coopers. Their pale ale is nice (although I prefer Little Creatures) and their extra stout is the best stout I have ever tried to date.

I generally drink full strength or extra strength, but a good midstrength (Rogers is the only mid I drink) can come in handy. It means I can have a full pint and still drive, it also means I can drink the same amount as usual, but feel a bit better the next day.
