Mayweather undercard seems to have gone under the radar!
Posted this on the general forum where I figured there would be more interested but this fight is going out live in the Uk as well and hopefully the good people at Sky do the right thing and show the whole udnercard.
I just did an article on it for boxingtribune about the Mayweather-ODLH undercard. I noticed about a week to ten days ago that pretty much every fighter on the card has an excellent record and is relatively young.
Really looking forward to seeing the two Filipino prospects Banal and Bautista. Both of their contests, on paper at least, have potential for fireworks.
If 'Boom Boom' wins his fight he's in line for Ponce DeLeon. Now that would be worth looking forward to.
Banal is only 18 which is pretty insane but he's beaten some unbeaten fighters already and is getting matched with a pretty tough looking cookie tomorrow night.
Juarez's fight looks pretty good as well.
I'm amazed that more people haven't picked up on this undercard. originally I thought I'd go out clubbing and leave early for PBF-Oscar but now i'm definitely staying in for it. Potential for some real thrills.
Has anyone seen either of the Filipinos or the Australian prospect on the bill? If so, thoughts?
John Murray is pretty decent. he's being put in with a nobody which is a little disappointing.
Last I heard the other British kid John O'Donnell couldn't travel over for his bout on the card because of passport problems.
Anyway if you can't be bothered checking out the undercard on boxrec then here's a link to my article.

Hope that doesn't make me a spammer. :(

Hmmm..might be worth catching a few of these fights I guess. I was planning on just getting up for the Oscar show - 4AM right??
The Filipino phenom I read about the other day, refered to him as their version of Amir Khan - big hype over there in other words.
The two Brits seem to be in decent fights as well - no doubt taking place in front of 15 website writers as per usual, as the high rollers lose their cash in the casio waiting for.........Showtiiiiime!!

I think that this undercard is probably better, in terms of fighters on show, than the Hopkins-De la Hoya one of 2004.
If you remember, we got Jantuah-Rubio, although it was a good finish from Jantuah. The dull Marquez-Salido fight - again, though, Marquez put in a solid performance. I enjoy watching him box. Carney Bowman and Kid Diamond were also shown.
Bautista-Medina has the ingredients to be explosive; i liked what i've seen of Baustista. Juarez is usually involved in decent scraps. But if there are a couple of quick finishes then we might get to see Murray and O'Donnell or even Billy Dib.

they were going to make Chris John v Rocky Juarez, but John allowed himself to get dragged in a foul fest in his recent title defense and the cuts he had kept him out.lvlarc wrote:Still think the undercard is weak. With all the money that this superfight will produce, and the fighters GBP are linked to, they couldn't have matched up another 2 world class fighters? We can watch prospects fight on any bill.

I'll be honest mate. I only noticed the undercard on boxrec. I'd love to say that I researched it vigorously after a hot tip but truth is I just came across it by chance and thought it was worth a write up.verballistic wrote:not much of a PPV to be sure...but a phenomenal feast of prospects from every "corner" of the globe on the undercard for the live audience!!WayoftheCass wrote:Posted this on the general forum where I figured there would be more interested but this fight is going out live in the Uk as well and hopefully the good people at Sky do the right thing and show the whole udnercard.

bautista and banal are 2 of the hottest prospects in all of asia, if not the entire world!! these 2 could eventually be the main beneficiaries of the filipino boxing boom spawned by pacman!!
billy dib is one of oceania's premier prospects, being touted to make international impact before long!!
johns o'donnell and murray are 2 of europe's hottest hopefuls---perhaps THE 2 hottest in britain!! o'donnell apparently cleared his passport issues, because he weighed in friday at 146, considerably lighter than his mexican journeyman foe, christian solano!!
but NOBODY better fits the term "under the radar" than former cuban amateur star CARLOS DUARTE!! he's a 5-0 cruiserweight who debuted as pro in mexico and had a couple of bouts in france late last year---this will be his US debut!! this guy is so far under the radar i just discovered him a week ago while browsing amateur websites (and i monitor the amateurs regularly)---he fought on the same cuban squad as HW odlanier solis in 1998 world junior championships and finished 2nd in the cuban nationals on several occasions!!
Sorry about not mentioning Duarte. The last time I looked at the listed bouts his name wasn't down. I know that Boxrec isn't the be all and end of all of facts but so far its the most useful and thorough resource I've found by a mile.

Problem is that when you make a huge main event which this undoubtedly is then people tend to not pay as much attention as they should to the supporting bouts. So the likes of Golden Boy promotions etc will figure why waste a world title fight on a n undercard which could be passed off as a headliner on another card. I'm struggling to think of one were the fighters, on paper at least, are a s well matched as this.
Maybe the status of the fights isn't huge but their likelihood to produce good fights is pretty high.

From a business point of view its makes sense. Why bother have a good undercard when the main event is big business on it own.
Most DLH undercards are not particularly great..... neither were Tyson's (one or two exceptions of course).
Juarez vs John would do okay (not great, but acceptable) as a main event (especially with a good undercard)... so from a GBP point of you it makes sense.
Its great that prospects like Murray and O Donnell feature on this bill, but experienced world class fighters like Juarez it would probably be a hinderance. He's been in 2 big Las Vegas events - so he has that experience. If he would have fought Chris John, many people would soon forget about the fight (being hyped about DLH vs Mayweather).

Maxboxing are spot on, the undercard is shit, but then no one is paying for the undercard in America. Besides Oscar and Floyd have eaten up all the money.DavidPayne wrote:Funny because maxboxing are unceremoniously slagging the undercard off as weak.
Perhaps our (British) context for undercards is slightly different.
They've seen them, they just don't think 2 'ok' fights is reasonable for 55 bucks. (Steve Kim's article was focused on the TV undercard only). I can see his point. However, as many have pointed out, Golden Boy don't need to put on a star-packed undercard. The main event has sold this show. I'm damn glad we're not being charged over and above the SKY subscription to watch this one, I must say.WayoftheCass wrote:What exactly are Max Boxing's reasons? Beside the Bautista-Medina fight has so far been a very worthy match-up.
I see your point, just don't think this undercard in particular is worth much praise all things considered. Barrera-Juarez II undercard impressed me though ;)WayoftheCass wrote:lvlarc wrote:Still think the undercard is weak.
