must say im very very surprised that o'donnell was defeated in this manner, perhaps he froze on the night, perhaps he was caught cold....hopefully we will get to see the action sometime.

congratulations to murray though, well done john.

Jesus I am shocked with O'Donnell result - was he caught cold? Was it a bad cut or just what happened??

I was really high on O'Donnell after his last couple of fights - he looked classy and determined. I hope he can bounce back from this - he is young enough, no doubt.

I wonder if the cameras were even turned on for this match? I would like to see it regardless.

It sounds a conclusive KO loss.

See below from fightnews.com:

In an upset, welterweight Christian Solano (20-11-4) knocked out previously unbeaten John O'Donnell (15-1). Solano dropped O'Donnell late in the first round with a left hook, then in the following round another left hook sent O'Donnell to the canvas face first. Time was 1:50.

Back to the drawing board for for the youngster. Shame

Gents this is no shock, there so called journeymen across the water would
be top line champs in this country. Again this just shows how protected are boxers are, we have no genuin champs at world class level at the moment i hate saying it but its true.

I'm shocked about the O'Donnell result. I was really impressed with the way he dealt with Elwell in March - making him look like a mug at times, something Stu isn't.

I was expecting him to impress on his US debut. However, looking at that kid’s record, he can definitely crack.

Then again, John was out-weighed by six pounds by a natural light-middle. Maybe that had something to do with it? Or perhaps he was caught cold in the first and never really recovered.

Or maybe he took beating -no excuses.

Bit of a shocker the O'Donnell result: he looked a solid prospect last time out. But like said previously, there's a lot of dangerous journeymen out there, with poor looking records that disguise a real risk fight.

Especially Mexicans of course, and looking back at this guys record, you can see he's a puncher who's been matched tough, with the likes of world class Rubio.

Maybe John just got caught cold & will end up looking back at this one as an early kick up the arse to not get too overconfident in there.

Tough luck for Hennessey here, but credit them for a lot more ambitious matchmaking than Warren - hope this doesn't make them over cautious.

And you can see why SN are so nail bittingly terrified of allowing their prospects in with someone who might have half a chance of breaking an egg.

Looking at the details on paper, it was definitely an ambitious match-up for O'Donnell at this stage of his career, and on such an occasion.

As mentioned, looking at his record, Solano can obviously crack and has been in with some good names. He's a big light-middle too (6" 1' according to his record), so maybe it was the wrong match-up for O'Donnell, but fair play for him and Hennessy for going with it. Hopefully it won't be too much of a setback and O'Donnell will learn from it.

Good to hear that Murray looked good, according to Sky, in his match-up.

Well this is the danger when you dont dress your fighters up in cotton wool, ...but O'Donnell can come back from this many great fighters have suffered losses early in their careers... it doesnt have to be the end or a career ruining disarster, ....I was surprised at the weight difference between the pair though and one must question how wise it was to allow John to give away 6 pounds to a tough journeyman, the type of which Amir Khan wouldnt be allowed to get into the same building with...

So he lost, it happens, but at least he's a FIGHTER who faces genuine opponents who try to win, not a big headed poser who boasts about being world champ and then fights midgets who cant break an egg!...

Its true - he rolled the dice and lost but hey, he is young with a long career ahead of him, (potentially), this defeat might teach him the importance of not underestimating anyone and also help tighten his defence.

The likes of ultra cautious Warren will use this result as a justification for the way he has matched the likes of Kevin Mitchell, Khan etc. I would rather see a young fighter take chances then be molly coddled ala George Collins.

There’s a cursory mention of the O’Donnell and Murray fights on The Times’ website.
There was a very sombre mood backstage in the British dressing-room at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. John O’Donnell was so upset he couldn’t even speak after his shock loss to Christian Solano, of Mexico, on the undercard of Floyd Mayweather's victory over Oscar De La Hoya.

Robert McCracken, O’Donnell’s trainer, was keen to point out that there had not been a huge weight discrepancy between the boxers, after Solano had originally weighed 10st 12lb – five pounds over the welterweight limit – compared to O’Donnell’s 10st 6lb. “He was given two hours to lose three pounds and he actually came in at 10st 8¼lb eventually, so there wasn’t a problem with the weight,” McCracken said.

McCracken, who once challenged for the WBC middleweight title, instead blamed a punch O’Donnell was caught by on the top of the head at the end of the first round and the boxer’s tendency to be a slow starter. “You just can’t do that at this level,” McCracken said.

John Murray, a stablemate of O'Donnell who produced a brilliant performance to stop Lorenzo Bethea in seven rounds, conducted his interviews in the corridor outside the dressing-room so not to upset the devastated Briton. The bout had ended after Bill Johnson, Bethea’s trainer, signalled to the referee that he wanted it stopped. Johnson has seen the consequences of bouts going too long. His son, Leavander, the former IBF lightweight champion, died after losing his title to Jesus Chavez in 2005.
It’s refreshing to hear someone accepting that a defeat was deserved, instead of scrabbling around for flimsy excuses. Hopefully that signals a willingness to learn from the mistakes.

Exactly, I've got far more respect for a fighter who goes abroad and loses to a tough ringwise opponent than I have for someone who slags off his fellow fighters while engaging in paid exhibition bouts against the most carefully handpicked opposition.... I'm sure O'Donnell will come back from this, ...it might even be the making of him...

It's the stats that puzzle me - O'Donnell against a former light-middleweight who was 6'1 and weighed 152lb at the weigh in

John was 146lb and is around 5'10

Mis-match for the 21 year old on his big stage debut especially as the opponent could crack with 20 wins and 15 KO's.

Agreed. The test for O'Donnell starts now.

I'm not a fan of the hype in press releases but anyone who writes off a prospect on one result is a fool. This whole undefeated record crap is killing the sport at least O'Donnell will now know what it's like to be hit by a bigger, tougher, hard hitting Mexican. And if he's got the strength of character to learn in his comeback you can guarantee he won't be cocky and he won't start slow again.

It's funny how people say "Fighters shouldn't be written off after one loss!" etc., then proceed to do exactly that as soon as a young prospect loses a fight...

did any country actually show these fights? ie Denmark, Germany etc. I definitely want the Murray fight. Was hoping for that slow nob Juarez to knock out his opponent in the 2nd, in hope that they'd fit the UK action in.

Sky just bought the international feed from HBO. They didnt have their own cameras there and I doubt very much whether HBO will have filmed all the prelims from the first bell.

UFC film all their 'dark matches', as the non-televised fights are known, and offer them to fans as part of both the event DVD that goes on sale and via their 'UFC On Demand' internet subscription service - that way you dont miss a thing.

Would be nice to see either HBO or the individual promoters do similar for boxing.

That Solano fella looked like he was too experianced for O'Donnell. Bigger names on his record over O'Donnell's.
