It's natural for us to criticise the comp of Warren fighters. Otherwise, who are we trying to kid? Anyway, someone over at the dark side is unhappy about the reader's comments moaning about Khan's comp. So a recent column says UK fans are the harshest around, and words like "slavering idiots."
Anyway, the guy who wrote this piece, Iain Axon, refers to Graham Earl as a "former WBO title challenger". That they can't distinguish between Interim and outright is either conmanship or just plain ignorance.
"So does the UK have the most demanding and critical fight fans in the world?
Judging by some of the responses to the news that Amir Khan will fight Commonwealth lightweight champion Willie Limond next, the answer is a resounding yes.
Khan has had 12 fights as a professional, and, despite his silver medal at the Athens Games of 2004, limited amateur experience. He has gone beyond six rounds just once, and never the championship distance.
Yet Limond, whose only defeat in 29 fights came against world title contender Alex Arthur three years ago, is deemed by some to be a soft touch.
Instead they want Khan to fight John Murray, Graham Earl or, the preference seems to be, British champion Jon Thaxton, although you get the impression that even one of that trio wouldn't be good enough for some of the slavering idiots around.
Juan Diaz? Too easy? Acelino Freitas? Over the hill.
Roll on King Kong, he'll really expose Amir.
I'm just glad Khan's not a prospect with one of these lunatics as his manager.
The call for Thaxton seems to be based not on the fact that Khan would look even better against him than Limond, but the theory that he'd prove too strong, durable and heavy-handed at this stage of Khan's career.
If that's true, wouldn't it be a fantastic idea to put a 20-year-old, who is still learning his trade and has only gone 10 rounds once, in with him. Bravo!
Fact is, Ricky Hatton - a two weight world champion and still undefeated - didn't take on Thaxton until his 22nd fight.
Cut badly, he was given a torrid time but won clearly on points, no doubt strengthened by the eight championship fights he had previously prepared for.
Why should it be different for Khan, who will probably get to Thaxton quicker than Hatton anyway?
For the record, Khan claims that Earl turned down a fight against him, although that's disputed by the former WBO world title challenger. It's difficult to know where the truth lies. Probably somewhere in between
What of Murray?
His offer to fight Khan on May 5 in Las Vegas on four weeks notice was recognisable to anyone with half a brain as a publicity-seeking red herring given their promotional differences and the fact they fight on rival television channels.
And with no title on the line, why should two undefeated prospects with designs on the world stage be thrown into together so early in their careers? That one's a football stadium fight in a few years time.
Khan's major crime at the moment appears to be his success, the fact he keeps on winning - and some stick he gave to his domestic rivals ahead of his clash with Steffy Bull earlier this month.
But what's he supposed to say when asked where he rates himself against the likes of Murray, Earl and Thaxton? That they'd hand him a bit of a hiding? He'd prefer not to fight them, thanks very much?
A dash of self confidence, arrogance, call it what you want, is an essential tool to have if you are going to make it in a sport where having an aura of invincibility is a handy weapon."

FW puts Calzaghe in with the runner-up in a reality show seriedand Enzo in with a 5'3'' man mountain with the speed of a tectonic plate and expects the fans not to say anything after a piss-poor nights boxing.
Maybe the British fans are difficult to please, but that doesn't excuse Frank diabolical match-making

Who the feck is Ian Axon?
And if SN really believed UK fans are the most "critical fight fans in the world" why on earth would they put on Enzo/Gunn, one of the worst and most cynical mismatches of recent memory?
What a load of bollox.
And as a result, SN are now off to the backwater obscurity of Irish PPV. Allegedly.

good riddance. at least they can't soil boxing anymore in front of a terrestrial audience - i hope.
why don't they just bring a trio of punch bags in the ring for calzaghe, khan and enzo to hit? how about a rematch, in exhibition form, between johnny nelson and cantatore? they could pretend to hit each other & show off, and equal the normal warren card for competitive spirit

I just hope and pray that Warren wont worm his way back onto SKY....

Wow. Looks like there are people in the UK who act just like most writers in the US. Idiot. How dare a prospect take on another prospect to prove who actually has a real chance in boxing. That doesn't make sense. And fighting for a championship belt this early. That wouldn't prove heart, give experience, or prove a person might be once in a generation (or at least top tier) talent. Can't stand writers like him that glorify mismatches. Ricky didn't fight Thaxton until his 22nd fight. We want to fight against inflated records. This man knows nothing about boxing and hopefully the plague of bad writers and know-nothings that has swept over here in the US won't touch you guys. Best of luck.
Michael Katz the 'hardhitting' tell it like it is American boxing writer said he "didn't like British boxing...it's to patriotic!"
Well I know Mr. Katz is 100% right, I have never encountered so much bias BS and protection of fighters in my experience than what we have witnessed in British champions since the days of Eubank & WBO titles.
the British fans AREN'T just too harsh, they are 'equally' quilty of 'regurgitating' the same old hype and BS as these SportNet writers and the Frank Warrens' (allegedly), fellow promoters, managers, commentators, magazines and the rest, spew forth...
this is British boxing SADLY.
the fans I refer to are not the "well informed" good old boys here at BoxRec, but the puppets out there who are 'parrots' of everything that they are told.
British boxing SUCKS!!!
and it's a shame too, because we do have some very, very good decent fighters out there among her ranks!
Mr. Katz is RIGHT! sad to say.

I have to say, Katz sounds ignorant there. In truth, Katz did seem ignorant about British boxing until Hatton and Calzaghe's breakout performances. There's a big cultural barrier has to be crossed to accept anything, even bigger when there's a much hyped American on the way up ala Lacy.jimglen wrote:Michael Katz the 'hardhitting' tell it like it is American boxing writer said he "didn't like British boxing...it's to patriotic!"

I wouldn't say all that is British boxing. I'd say it's WARREN BOXING. Maloney, Hennessey and FA are doing pretty well. Some definite growing pains & some disappointments. But Haye, Froch are on the verge on title fights, and guys like Munyai, Murray etc could have big futures in the sport. These guys aren't safeguarded.

To be fair, I think he is right about the Khan bashing.
He does cvome over arrogant calling out Thaxton etc when he knows he wont be fighting them this year, but its his perogative, and I think Amir is just supremely confident in his abilities.
Now, if this article were attempting to defend the general alledgedly match-making, it would be insulting the fans.

FW and SN are full of shit.
Look at FWs NOTW 'columns' (not that I ever have, I just read what people extract onto this forum), just pure propoganda.
If boxing was regulated like football (or any other sport) FW would have been chucked out years ago.
In some ways the guidance of a young prospect is what makes boxing unique as a sport, it doesn't really happen in any other sport where you carefully select opposition on their way up....
But there isn't enough room on this page to list the fights that SN have robbed the British public of over the years in the cause of protecting their cash cows.

If he's supremely confident then why is he avoiding fights with Murray and Thaxton?? in favour of fighting Limond who cant break an egg??!...jimb0d wrote:To be fair, I think he is right about the Khan bashing.

Very true, its unrealistic to throw Khan in with Thaxton now. Khan needs to mature and be stepped up gradually.
Limond is a start in terms of a step up if nothing else.

I've no problem with Khan taking his time and building up to fights like Thaxton etc... my problem is that he mouths off about being in a different class to the likes of Murray and Thaxton and being world champ in a year blah blah and then he shys off fighting them!... the truth is I doubt he will ever go anywhere near anyone as tough as Thaxton for a good few years... he's a fraud imo...

Hes got a better shot against the likes of Diaz than Murray and Thaxton has though. Hes supposed to be confident and cocky if he wasnt he'd be a bag of nerves in the ring. Hes also supposed to act like hes the best in Britain - as thats why the unkowledgable public tune in to watch him.
Khan will fight Murray/Earl in the next 18 months. He may or may not fight Thaxton. Because Thaxton is a danger man and why risk it for the British title when you can risk it all against Juan Diaz or an aged Morales?
