Heavyweights: Mike Tyson vs Earnie Shavers
One got to go. I see some knockdowns. Or probably the one that connects flush first wins this fight. I pick Tyson by KO between 2 KO artists of the heavyweight division.

Good question
Earnie was possibly my alltime favorite but I pick Tyson in this one. Tyson would almost certainly land first and that would be all she wrote right there.

Re: Good question
A replay of Quarry vs. Shavers. Shavers could punch but he could not take a punch too well. And prime Tyson's timing and speed were infinitely superior.

What class fighter did Tyson ever take out in 1 besides a scared Spinks?
A premature stoppage over Truth Williams? Marvis Frazier? Lou Saverese (another questionable stoppage)? Clifford Ettiene? Come on, in fantasy matchups people always dismissively say "Tyson KO 1" but if the likes of Mike Jameson, Frank Bruno, Joes Ribalta (not to mention Buster Douglas) can go rounds with a prime Tyson, I have no doubt Shavers could. Tyson would not go in wailing like he did with Frazier b/c he would know one punch from Shavers could turn everything around.

Dempsey thanks for pointing this out. Shavers having a weak chin is another one of those myths that seems to be brought up over and over again on this forum by people that claim to actually know the sport.dempseyfire wrote:Shavers chin was actually pretty decent but stylewise this fight is all wrong for him.
That being said, I'd still pick Tyson 7 out of 10 times, but Tyson was there to be hit by the right and Shavers could have pulled off the upset.
I would love to be able to say Earnie wins this one with an early brutal KO but I just can't see that happenening. Tysons combination of power and hand speed would give Earnie a hard time.
I can see Tysons faster, shorter hooks coming inside Earnies wider shots, to stun then stop Earnie inside 6 brusing rounds more likely by TKO than clean KO as Shavers didn't have a glass jaw.
Sure lesser fighters than Shavers lasted longer with the prime Tyson but they often spent a lot or all of the fight in survival mode. Shavers would be going right at Tyson.

I think Shavers probably threw (arguably) the hardest one shot right hand in all of HW history. His right, if he could land it early (even if it didn't produce a KO), could change how this fight might go ...The Great John L wrote:Dempsey thanks for pointing this out. Because I believe Tyson's mental toughness may have been a question mark, even when his star was at its highest. Fact is, he seldom was hit good, and certainly never by a shot like Shavers could throw. And until Buster Douglas, no one with decent skills ever came right after him like Shavers would. Everyone always fought Tyson in a defensive mode.
But Tyson was a lot faster and Earnie wasn't very defensively gifted, so it's hard to imagine Earnie not being KO'd in this one.
I can imagine Tyson going into his shell when Shavers right hand lands but Earnie's reluctance to press his advantage would allow Tyson to regroup and come again.kingpawn wrote:I think Shavers probably threw (arguably) the hardest one shot right hand in all of HW history. Tyson KO 3.
Shavers has a punchers chance but if Ruddock couldnt dent Tyson's chin, I doubt Shavers could despite him being in my view the hardest punching heavyweight shot for shot. Like Ruddock, Shavers throws his punches one at a time and you need boxing skills to defeat Tyson.
A savage fight while it lasts.

Shavers was an overall more skilled fighter and put his punches together better than Ruddock, but Earnie isnt noted for having a good chin while Ruddock is. Ruddock can afford to brawl with Shavers while Shavers would have to box from a distance because Ruddock could take a very good punch (See the Weaver fight where Mike hits him with a John Tate left hook).dempseyfire wrote:Shavers was a lot better than Razor Ruddock.
Watching Ruddocks two fights with Tyson, he displays guts but little else. His fight plan (if he even had one) was SO AWFUL, I would only show it to young guys training as to how NOT to fight a short pressure fighter.
If Ruddock couldnt dent Tysons chin, I dont think Shavers would be able to unless he fought very smart and set his punches up i.e when he set up that big right hand on Ali in their bout. (2nd round)

I like Shavers, but I figure Tyson wins here. Tyson in his prime had better defense and hand speed. Mike wasn't tough, but he could take a pretty good punch and if Shavers nails him I could see him surviving. Shavers would be the biggest puncher Mike has fought, but Mike would be the biggest puncher Shavers fought. I'd pick Tyson in 4-5... not 1.

What literally? Because he was certainly no pansy in a boxing ring Dec. He was ruined by the 2 fights with Tyson, during which he put in colossal efforts. Youre way off mark here DecDecagon wrote:Razor Ruddock was a pansy.RazorKO wrote:Tyson KO 3.
