The Eastern trials are being held 10 miles down the road next week in Cocoa so I plan on stopping by for a few sessions. Who should I keep the closest eye on ?

I don't know when that list was last updated, but I believe there are quite a few boxers who lost at the Nat'l GG who will be entering. I know of a few who sent in their entry forms and they are not on the list yet.

I understand that there has been extensive "recruiting" of the boxers who are not advancing in the GG tournament. The entry deadline has also been extended to Monday, May 14th so I don't know if we'll see a complete list prior to the start of the tournament or not.

Today should be the round of 16 with the quarter-finals tomorrow. That means that Monday and Tuesday normally would be the round of 32, but I have a feeling that the tournament just moved the round of 16 action to those days (at least in most weight classes). If my guess is correct, then the 201 pound division had 6 preliminary bouts, which means they had 2 byes (total of 14 boxers).

Barnwell would have been one of my picks to win in, but he had a medical DQ. Now I would say that Andres Taylor or Norman Neely are my favorites to win it. However, I don't know who the 2 boxers are that received byes.

With only 120 entries, doesn't sound like there will be much in the way of competition. Norman Neely is one of my favorite boxers - did very well as a JO and is a great person. I'm rooting for him. 8)

Actually there can be a lot of good competition in some of the weight classes. It just means that most boxers will only box 4 times (round of 16) instead of 5 times (round of 32) that would happen if the total was 200 - 300. A tournament can have great competition with just 8 good boxers per weight class - quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals.

Mel - I understand your thinking, but my point is that most tournaments have fewer than 32 entries per weight class which means 5 bouts or less per boxer. The Eastern Trials will have somewhere between 9 and 16 entries for most weight classes which means 4 bouts or less per boxer. There will typically be just one less bout per boxer so there won't be a lack of competition except perhaps in the 106/112 weight classes.

Well the two guys that received byes were Erick Earvin and Danny Calhoun. Calhoun beat Earvin at the MW Trials so I think Calhoun will win again. Neely v. Dawejko - Neely has won this matchup several times in the past so I have no reason to expect a different outcome this time. Lenroy Thompson has boxed at 201+ and is already in the US Championships at that weight as he won his Regional tournament. It looks like he is now trying to qualify at 201. He just lost at the Nat'l GG at 201+. He is boxing Andres Taylor who also used to box at 201+. This should be an interesting bout. Filerio v. Owens - I don't know either of these guys. I think you have to throw Calhoun into the mix with Neely and Taylor (assuming he beats Lenroy Cameron Thompson). Who wins it all?

Had front row seats last night so I got to see some things up close in the Lightweight,Light Welterweight,Welterweight and Middleweight classes.

At Lightweight Angelo Ward (Baltimore) showed really fast hands and Chris Green (Asbury,NJ) had very tight defense. I would expect one of these two fighters to win this weight class here though Carlos Arce (Los Angeles) could factor in as well. Not very deep and I dont think anyone has a shot at making the Olympic roster but there is parity.

Light Welterweight, Javier Molina ( Commerce,CA) is the class of the field if not the tournament. The kid is extremely talented and not only should win this class but could earn a birth on the Olympic team if he can get by rivals Jeremy Bryan and Karl Dargan at the main qualifying tournament later this year. Mike Faragon (Schenectady) who has tons of national expierence is also in this weight class and hometown favorite and Nigerian transplant Joseph Elegele (Melbourne,Fla) had the best knockout of the night and seems back on track after a few years struggling with out of the ring issues.

Welterweight featured the most lopsided bouts as the brackets whcih were randomanly draw ended up pitting the haves vs the havenots. Jesse Lubash (Munhall,Pa) who is nationally ranked looked very solid though he tired a bit late,David Roman (Patterson,N.J.) another favorite here barley had a sweat going before his bout was stopped and Gabriel Pham (Kissimmee,Fla) who at 6'4 has tremendous reach could also win this championship. Robert Burwell (Orlando,FL) who had a lost of success in the younger ages classes will be very tough in time just isnt strong enough yet.

Middleweight had a few guys most amateur followers would recognize in Quinton Willis(Ft Myers,Fla),Denis Douglin (Morganville,N.J.),Abraham Han (El Paso,Tx) and Richard Grant (Palm Bay,Fla). Han had the fight of the night with Dante Moore(South Euclid,OH) and appears to be in top form, I would give him the edge right now but any of these 4 could come out on top.

All in all you couldnt beat the action for $7 and parking fees waived for the night. A shame the turnout wasnt larger ( 100-120) as these kids need the support and deserve it as well.

I like your report about Javier. He is class and always has been. He has already lost to Bryan on a 3/2 and, frankly, I think both Bryan and Dargan have too much experience for him. I really look for he and his twin brother Oscar to, hopefully, make the 2012 Olympic team. However, for just coming out of the JOs, they are both doing extremely well. Hope you'll be able to post your views for the rest of the tournament.

holeymoley99 - I echo Mel's sentiment as I too hope you can continue to comment on the rest of the tournament. It is helpful to get additional info about the bouts and not just the names of the winners.

I don't know, from what I saw that Robert Burwell kid looked pretty strong. He scored a knockdown and seemed to rock Tillman nearly at will. Plus he seems pretty light on his feet, except that he got a little tired in the last round. He's the youngest one in the tournament though, so we'll see what happens.

I looked at the USAB rankings, 4th quarter 2006, JOs and 1st quarter 2007. Don't see him listed anywhere.........????

Boxmel, I know Bryan has beaten Molina a few times in the past including last month by 5 or 6 points but Javier could reverse that,of course I am a big Bryan fan and think Jeremy will make the team and beat Dargan along with the way but there isnt a lot seperating this group. One of the deepest weight around as has been discussed a few times.

Burwell was very sharp if he had a bit more power the bout would have been stopped as they were clean blows,he has very good feet in there I was impressed at how he slipped punches. I think he will be a major factor in 2012 if he stays amateur that long.

A few fighters from Lubash's camp had told me Jesse is ranked ( Or perhaps I misunderstood them to say he will be ranked) after making the Golden Gloves Quarters recently and losing to Demetrious Andrade. I was told he has an older brother who is pretty decent and deaf (Much like Devin Vargas whose older brother Dallas is deaf),seems like a good story this kid has.

I am hoping to make tomorrow's semifinals and if I do will I will surely report back what I see.

I'm a big Bryan fan, too - he's a great kid and a good learner (I spent some time with him at the PAL a couple of years ago showing him the hows and whys of computer scoring); I've known "Dynamite" since I spent three weeks at Marquette, Michigan with him in 2000 and Coach Richardson is a good friend. I'll just have to wait and see who rises to the top here. I'm really glad I'm assigned to the Olympic Trials this year.

Bryan fought David Hamby last night correct? That's who you guys are talking about? If so, then yeah - he's a good fighter. David Hamby is pretty craft and David didn't score one point.
