He's the name being touted as the next victim of Sergio Martinez. I've actually had to defend Roberts on a number of occasions and I think he's been written off a bit too early. I know he's boring (although far from pooring against a shot Keith Mullings), but his style has been effective.
If Roberts can cause the upset (and who would have thought 12 months ago we'd be calling it an upset) it could catapult him right back and the Number 1 Light Middle in the country.
However, I personally don't think its likely as I believe Martinez is a bit too quick. If you read Roberts' thoughts on the fight, he doesn't sound to confident (unless he's one of the honest fighters - which is rare).
What does anyone think.
Steve Roberts
Yeah I agree, but you don't blame Roberts - Neighbours has been really good recently. Oh, and I hope he's been watching Tricia aswellbennie wrote:Martinez has been fighting and beating good men, while Roberts has essentially been watching Neighbours twice a day. There's talk of December for the fight. That's too soon to expect the comebacking West Hammer to beat Martinez.

Don't you think that perhaps (only perhaps, just a theory here) Roberts went stale as did Williams. Sometimes fighters need to carry on with their momentum, after the stunning win over Mullings and the pretty good win over Weaver the next fight should have been a top 10 for Roberts. Instead it was back to Braintree leisure centre or whatever. Absolutely shocking promoting. Same goes for Richard Williams, about the time of the win over Shannon Taylor he should have been moved quickly but oh no, he starts going after Paul Samuels.DIRT SUGAR wrote:Steve's not going to be any better than he was the last time he fought is he? Martinez is totally the wrong fight for him. Steve should stay retired IMO. He's hit his peak and won't reproduce the kind of form that saw him beat the likes of Keith Mullilngs so convincingly.
Maybe with renewed motivation Roberts could surprise us? He did look very talented to me. Although it is also fairly common knowledge that Roberts is quite unambitious in his outlook so perhaps he never did want the big fights.
Steve Roberts fought a lot of average guys and then stepped up against a decent guy in Pestraev totally unprepared, Roberts is skilled but i think lacks the spark to go any further than British level. He can be hit and hurt as he showed against Ron Weaver, i see him taking a couple of warm up fights and then seeking a domestic clash with Williams or Takaloo or at least that's what i think he should do. I once thought he was the best at Light-Middleweight and what potential that division had at home but they have all but frittered away now. Williams loss the final nail in the coffin
