Yeah read that article earlier today and you have to say pieces like that perfectly highlight the benefits boxing can have: it can change a kids life from that of a weak, cowering victim into a confident, proud man.

Nice stuff and the perfect antidote to all the negative stories of boxers getting in trouble with the law.

Absolutely, now I didn't see eye to eye with my ex amateur coach on a lot of boxing related issues and on a personal level I didn't think that much of him (he was a bigamist!!).

However, give him his dues... he always had his doors open and always had a ear and an embrace for anyone in trouble and would treat everyone equal. He even letting an ex con done for robbery (and not remorseful) stay in his house for weeks while he seeked a new place.... Not sure if he let him borrow the spare wife mind!

One of the best acts he did though involved a young lad who all I knew was very very poorly and not expected to live to a great age (some kinda asmatha type thing) the best thing he did was treat him normal. Let him sparr etc, sometimes you could see my coach wink to his son when sparring the lad and the next thing the coaches' son had been "put down". The smile on the lads face coming into training was something else, best remedy he ever had.
