World title fight in NZ

Post by oliverfennell »

I read that if Mundine retains his belt next time out, he could defend in Auckland next, which apparently would be the first time a world title has been contested in New Zealand.

Now, I know NZ is no great shakes in boxing, but it's still a major developed nation, so I'm surprised there has NEVER been a world title fight there. Is it true?

There have been many regional and versions of "world titles" like the WBF etc contested here but as Im to believe there has never been a 'major' world title IBF, WBO, WBA, WBC contested here.

The logistics of bringing a World title fight down here are huge. Unless theres a local fighter thats good enough to fight for one theres really no reason to bring one here other than to make history, but the financial requirements would be huge! I quess we are just lucky Mundine lives across the ditch which makes life easy, that and hes very well known here makes a title fight in NZ viable!

Well thats exactly it, the cost in bringing down a quality opponent is half the reason no world title fights have been done here to start with! I think they'l get a good guy for Mundine the people setting it up no what they are doing!
