News relating to Junior Witter.

Post by stujones »

I think some people might be interested to know the Demarcus Corley fought and lost at Lightweight last night. He lost to Jose Alfaro by stoppage in the 8th round.... Down 3 times aswell. Alfaro isn't the greatest losing everytime he has faced anyone with a half decent record.

Maybe puts Witter's performance into a little perspective.

Yup that doesn't reflect well on Our Junior, seems a strange time in Corleys career for him to drop to Lightweight

Witter is stylistic, but I always have doubts about him. I think he's a bit of a bitch to be honest. I think most of the fighters from Ingle's gym are.

Does put a little perspective on Witter's win. When I saw it I was really dissappointed Junior didnt go for the kill, he could have stopped Corley. Still even if Corley is shot I reckon witter has the skill to give any light welter a tough night.

Is that the technical term?

Well seeing as Corley has been a career light-welter, then this defeat might have more to do with him having drained himself making lightweight.
Maybe he saw more oppotunities in the lower wieght division, as he was unlikely to get another shot at a light-welter world title any time soon.
His opponent Alfaro, may have not been that good a technical boxer but he did have 17 wins , with 16 Ko's on his record, and a pretty good chin.

Mayweather didn't stop Corley however.

So maybe we shouldn't read too much into this.

sounds like stu is a bit biased against witter. i think the weightmaking is a bit more of the issue here for demarcus, im very pro witter, he cruises too much during fights and can be outworked but shit the boy can hit.

Sure he can hit, but who has he ever stopped of any note. Whenver he's in with a decent level operator, he can't stop them.

I said before the Corley fight, that Junior would win it pretty comfortably, and he did, but it wasn't a really impressive performance, due to Witter's current style, which may be due to declining physical prowess, bad hands, or just facing different opposition.

Mayweather may not have stopped Corley, but he made a proper fight of it, and truth be told, gave Corley a pretty solid slapping. Corley looked very distressed and went down voluntarily several times to try and avoid being stopped.

The trouble is that Witter refuses to set up his power shots with solid fundamentals like a jab, and instead of working his power shots into his combinations, tends to take massive wild swings which the better operators can see coming.

Did anyone else read that interview with Billy Graham in one of the sunday papers, where he said he thought Hatton should retire soon, and that his treatment of his body between fights was catching up with him. Surprised to hear that from Graham to be honest, unless he's hoping to lure p[eople to fight him in the belief that Hatton is in decline.

Corley could of been weight drained as he has not made Lightweight before this fight as a pro.

Doesn't say shit, Witter clowned him while Judah has a closely scored fight and Cotto hurt by Corley.

Didn't Corley also hurt Floyd at one point In the fight?

Funny when Corley thought he was robbed against Witter. :o

Too many Witter victims go Into survival mode once they feel his punches. Like Morua when he said he was going to put the pressure on and then he goes Into survival.

At least Hatton wouldn't be Intimidated to go Into survival.

I like the Ingle style, It's not your typical cover up and fight style thats common with British fighters.

I'm not sure why the weight making is an issue... Such a low key fight, I'm sure he didn't have to make Lightweight if he wasn't comfortable at doing it. Thaxton wasn't making Lightweight for his few fights before Lenny Daws.

I think Corley has been a faded fighter for sometime.... never been the same post Judah IMO. Although this is his first non world class opponent (with some amibtion) to prove it. Like James, I liked Junior's chances an awful lot BEFORE the fight and was thoroughly dissapointed with the fight and his display.

Hurting Cotto isn't that big a deal I'm afraid (to fans of Cotto).

I think at 140 Cotto was very vulnerable, he was probably entering the ring horribly dehydrated, and it's not surprising he was susceptible to being stunned by a punch. Corley got bashed up before hurting Cotto, and once Cotto recovered, he started bashing him up again. I have watched these fights several times, and I thought the stoppage was totally understandable, because Corley kept going to the canvas voluntarily.

Mayweather did a pretty good number on Corley, and although lots of people have talked about how Corley hurt him, it's been much overplayed, Corley connected with a flush shot, Mayweather retreated to the ropes, and was fine after that, and I think knocked Corley down in the same round as I recall.

We don't know what this means exactly.

Corley was in with a puncher at lightweight, put him down in the first and got stopped in the 8th. So it sounds like a war of sorts. Maybe Corley was horribly drained? Maybe he lost focus after the loss to Witter? Maybe hes gone down hill in 8months or just got caught on a bad night?

At the end of the day Witter shut Corley out and didnt get hit so it was a good but tentitive performance. Corley could catch opponents with sneeky right hooks and was slick so shutting him out is no mean feat even if he has been stopped.

What about HAttons opponents losses. Maussa lost to Morua (journeyman Witter opponent) pre-Hatton and to a journeyman in his fight after Hatton. Olivera was beat up and stopped by Augustus. Collazo who some think beat Hatton was taken to school by Mosley.

Losses happen in boxing and this doesn't have a bearing on the Harris fight at the end of the day.

Being taken to school by Mosley is no big disgrace, and I think everyone agrees that Urango and Maussa were nowt special.

I am not talking about Witter with reference to Hatton, merely pointing out that I fully expected him to beat Corley, who has been vastly overrated based on moments of success in fights with Cotto and Mayweather, both of whom bashed him up pretty bad.

Witter badly needs a clear-cut and emphatic win against a top flight opponent if he is ever to make that elusive big payday.

Is this Harris fight still happening?

Witter needs a defining fight and Harris is just that. Harris isn't held in as high regard as Castillo, but for my money hes a much tougher fight at 140 depending how good Castillo and Harris still are.

Harris is his mando so it should be happening soon, I think the purses have been agreed but I hope Harris doesn't pull out because its small money for a big job for him.

Its a true 50-50 fight against a top4 fighter. Kotelnik, Ndou and Corley were top10 guys and good performances. But he does need defining fights soon.

Don't get me wrong, I didn't design the thread with the intention to slag off Witter..... Mearly pointing out those who were impressed with the Witter performance and call Corely an outstanding opponent maybe need to think again. Corely WAS a decent fight, but it was a fair while ago since he put in a decent performance.

Don't worry, IF Hatton beats Castillo and Castillo loses to a similar level fighter I will be doing a similar thread..... As was done after the Mosley vs Collazo fight. Alot of Boxrecers (myself included) tipped Collazo based on his effort vs Hatton... Wrong.

PN, I do agree that Harris is a very credible mandatory - definately a fresher opponent than Corley and a step up. Not sure I put him in the 34 year old Castillo bracket. He wasn't exactly outstanding vs Lazcano (a tough but limited fighter) and I think the fact that Stevie Johnston is back at Lightweight and looking decent is an indicator of how much the size difference between the two.

Castillo wasn't outstanding against Herman either.

Castillo has non title fights at Welter so he might be drained at 10stone.
