Greenburgs shorts only $100,000

Post by Old bones Ian »

Although for a good cause, would you buy his shorts for $100,000

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Greenberg Boxing Shorts Bought for $100K by Backgammon Site
10-05-07

May 11, 2007 – http://www.BackgammonMasters.com has purchased heavyweight boxer Roman Greenberg’s shorts for $100,000 and will auction them for charity. The $100K will give the young fighter a shot at the world championship, and proceeds from the auction of the boxer’s shorts will be donated to groups assisting Arab and Jewish youth in distress.

The $100,000 paid for the shorts will support Greenberg’s battle to become one of the World Boxing Organization’s (WBO) top fighters this year. Greenberg beat veterans Kendrick Releford, Julius Francis, Steve Pannell and in his last bout won against American Michael Simms at the world famous Madison Square Garden in NYC. Roman currently resides in the UK where he trains with Jim Evans.

Roman Greenberg was recently quoted as saying: “It makes no difference what people say about me, I am undefeated. I am winning my fights and will continue to win with my eyes on the world championship.”

BackgammonMasters will auction off Greenberg's boxing shorts after the next fight, with bids starting at $100,000. The money raised by the auction will be donated to a charity for youth in distress from Arab and Jewish communities. BackgammonMasters.com promotes peace and understanding through competitive games such as backgammon (or Tawula as it’s called in Arabic). They believe strongly in the endorsement of coexistence between Arabs and Jews.

Roman Greenberg is himself a Russian-born Jew and, at age 24, he’s one of the youngest heavyweight contenders with a real shot at the WBO heavyweight championship. He is currently undefeated with a record of 25-0 (17 KO's).

BackgammonMasters.com is the only site to offer three of the world’s most popular games. In addition to Backgammon, the site offers the popular Spanish dice game Perudo along with Backgammon and as well as Poker.

The world’s number one backgammon site has sponsored numerous live and online backgammon tournaments including Backgammon Live in London, the Japan Open, Chicago Open and Las Vegas Open, and the Monte Carlo Yacht Party backgammon tournament

Its a publicity stunt.

They are paying fornicate all. They have agreed to pay 100k but then Greenberg get free publicity and Backgammon site is on secondsout.com, so no money actually changes hands.

He should get publicity by performing well against good opposition but that seems too much to ask.

It does indicate the marketing power of a Jewish heavyweight.
Forget bout the great white hope, moneywise he could be massive.
Jim Evans had just better be careful not to put him in with anyone who can fight!

According to Boxing News Greenberg was offered very good money to take on Vitali Klitschko but Jim Evans said you always turn down the first offer. In other words they are pricing themselves out unless a massive offer comes in and then they will accept knowing Greenberg will probably be finished after he takes a big beating.

Roman is a very nice kid and does have talent. Serious, if you saw footage of him as a 17 year old and didn‘t know him you‘d be well excited about him turning pro, like I was 8 years ago.... BUT, as I've always tried to tell Jim Evans, Robert Waterman and Roman's chief cheerleader Clive Bernath, Roman is lazy a f*cker and has actually regressed over the last three years. He’s surrounded by yes men and groupies and no-one has told him that, as a small heavyweight, he has to be razor sharp and fit.

Well, actually, Dennis Hobson told him that to his face “Your attitude will get you knocked f-ing out” in Monaco a couple of years and nearly had Waterman in tears.

FYI David Haye knocked Greenberg down with a jab in sparring three years ago and Michael Sprott has put Greenberg down and out in sparring twice and I’ve heard enough similar claims from three other heavyweights.

Heck, despite getting dominated and played with for two days in camp, Mark Krence busted Greenberg’s rib and sent him to hospital.

Greenberg has natural talent but he’s a KO victim waiting to happen.
Roman stopped progressing after the Derek McCafferty fight about 4 years ago. I went to that fight and Roman boxed extremely well.

He seems to have learned nothing since, and looks out of condiion and quite frankly bored. The level of his opposition has not really progressed in 4 years, so no wonder he seems bored.

Is he going to fight Vitali

Spot on Ant, as I have said before... Roman got it all too easy, too early and consequently has no hunger for the game at all...

Just like the mexican american light welter who got a massive signing on fee when he turned pro then couldnt motivate himself to get in shape.... What was his name?? I forgot!

Yeah, he made his comeback on the recent De La Hoya bill, reading the report looks as if he was tested in the fight. maybe his backers wanted to see what he's still got.

Also Ricardo Williams was another olympian from the Sydney games that was handed a big signing on fee, then forgot to train. He's now in prison for drug trafficing

Yep, think you are right, he seems to be sleepwalking through his career, and woe betide him if he gets in the ring with Vitali, it'll be a fekking massacre, provided of course Vitali isn't shot to shite, which is a possibility given his emaciated appearance shortly after he retired and the long layoff.

It seems madness to put him in with Vitali after he's had such piss poor opposition previously, as i said before, either they are cashing out on Roman with a big money fight, or they are hoping against hope he can beat Vitali, which seems incredibly unlikely.

Is this fight going ahead?

Does make you realise, that in order for wealthy fighters like Barrera, Morales, Ray Leonard, Pacquaio, Mayweather, DLH to keep pushing themselves to train and keep winning ( I know some of them haven't won much lately), must be extremely difficult.

I think it takes an ego bordering on the mentally ill to keep wanting to go back to the well again and again.

Those that make a fat payday and don't really ever do much after that, in a way that's understandable.

I was reading about Buster Douglas the other day, he got himself all hyped up for that one fight, but once he'd beaten Tyson, he just didn't really seem to care any more, he turned up, got whacked out by Evander, and went home with his cheque for $17 million happy as a pig in shit, and gorged himself silly. Who can blame him.

I guess not everyone has the right mental make-up to be a champion, talent is only a small part of the equation really.

which is why you gotta love Oscar, lennox and Evander... they all were worth in excess of $50m yet still got up at 6am to do there roadwork...

it is also why i dont criticise Naz too much... you gotta ask yourself if you train so hard with £50m in the bank

Err, that's exactly what I was saying knockout! Didn't you read the first bit of my post? :TU:

Yes, I think with Naz, he got it all too quickly. He was a superstar early in his career, and outearning his peers in the sub lightweight divisions by a country mile, he became convinced of his invincibility, started cutting corners and getting all bling, and then the wheels fell off, and he couldn't be bothered to go back to scratch.

Incidentally, Buster got in excess of 24 MIL! That was his set payday before PPV figures whatever else.

He did come back & try redeem himself in the end, though. Fair play for a multi millionaire pushing 40.
