I asked Pat about how he felt losing such a close decision esp when it was away from home.
He said he doesn't feel bad about it, he had a bundle of stiches after the fight and was bashed up so doesn't feel hard one by.
It was one amazing performance by Pat though, esp when u tlook at the fight in the context of Sanchez's other fights

When Pat hit the deck late on in the fight I thought there was no way in the world he would get up - it must have taken a huge heart, massive fitness and a warrior's spirit but he did it.

HE is certainlythe best I can ever remember from round my way

He is very down to earth and essentially happy with his lot despite his sometimes dour appearance.
I said to him it must of been great winning medals in the Commonwealth and Olympic games and ABA titles, he said he was still living in a bedsit in the rough bit of Birmingham at the time.
I said does it bother him that his shots came against Nelson and Sanchez when in todays world he would have been a champion, he said he had some good paydays lives in the nice bit of Brum and plays golf everyday.
Boxing has been good to him.

Charlie Magri told me that Pat was the best fighter he ever sparred by a country mile.

He said that he was virtually impossible to hit and his awkward crouching style used to completely flummox him.

I believe that Pat and Magri sparred together as amateurs quite a lot.

Is Pat still training/managing boxers? I know he was fed up with the politics of the sport a while ago

Aye, he is training quite a few fighters at the moment – the majority of which are from Coventry. Plus he trains he current Midland Area super-middleweight champion Neil Tidman.

He puts on four shows a year in Birmingham too – which, due to a mix up at the door, I missed on Monday night.

He phoned me up and apologised about his door staff , who wont work at his show again.

He has a fighter he is really excited about – re-lighted the fire, or so he told me – Dougie Walton. I’ve seen all but one of his fights and he is good. He is a super-bantam, 4-0-1 (1), and a former ABA semi-finalist.

like i said - pat was an absolute magician and i have used the words boxing genius to describe him. strangely, i have never met him but from your accounts he seems like a really nice fella. i was very sad at his decline and losing badly to fighters not fit to tie his laces a few years previous. one of my all time brit boxing heroes

One of the best fights I ever saw was rematch between Michael Hunter v Marc Callaghan for the british title, a shame there was no tv for this. Was a Dave Garside show in hartlepool nov' 2004. that was a war, was needle between them to but showed great respect for each other after. Hunter won when Callaghans corner throw in towel in the 10th

Pat Cowdell, fantastic servant to Boxing, I always remember him fighting Dave Needham at the Albert Hall and asking Micky Duff at the end of the 13th round how he had it he said even. I fell out of my seat laugthing Cowdell pissed it.

by the way scrap, did we ever have a better amateur than terry waller?
5 ABA champ titles and a runner up. terry waller (lynn abc) was pure class.

i may put out a feeler on the british boxing forum for info about terry.

Terry was a terrific fighter at national level his track record at International level wasnt to hot ive had fighters as good many years ago. But i liked Terry he was a nice guy.
