Skelton urges Haye to bide time

Matt Skelton says David Haye should take care of business at cruiserweight before any move up to heavyweight.

Haye's quick win over Pole Tomasz Bonin in his first top-weight fight convinced him he can thrive in the division.

But Commonwealth champion Skelton said: "If you move up a division and call out its better fighters, you have to put things right in your own first.

"David needs to rectify his loss to Carl Thompson, then there's also (WBO champion) Enzo Maccarinelli out there."

Skelton, who defends his title against Michael Sprott in London on 26 May, said: "I've met David on a number of occasions and he comes across as a lovely fella.

"He's a good fighter and a good athlete, but I don't think he's ready for the heavyweight division at its higher end. I'm talking about the guys who are naturally that weight, they're fit with it and strong.

"We've all seen what's happens to fighters who move up in weight - they look good, they've got the punch power. But put them up against a natural heavyweight and it's a totally different game."

Bedford's Skelton, 40, is hoping his re-match against Sprott - he stopped his rival in the 12th round in April 2004 - will lead to a world title shot.

Londoner Haye, 26, plans to take on France's WBA and WBC cruiserweight champion Jean-Marc Mormeck, 34, later this year.

I didn't see anthing wrong with Haye having a fight at HW before moving he beats Mormeck, its give us a mouthwatering taste of what's to come. THE WORLD IS IN TROUBLE!!

Fcuk knows why Skelton is saying he should avenge the Carl Thompson defeat, I thought he was long retired. Enzo and FW had their chance, if he wants another when Haye is the champ him and FW should be made to come cap in hand with the cheque book wideopen or Maloney should put in FW type offer

. I'd love to see Haye beat Mormeck for the titles and defend against Enzo (yes I'm getting ahead of myself I know), but Fwank will have to realise Haye will be in the bargaining position, what a fight that would be though

I hope Skeltons not talking about himself when he's on about these BIG fit natural HW's that Haye should be weary of, because Haye takes his head off IMO

After recently watching the Mormeck-Bell rematch i am warming to Haye's chances in this bout. Mormeck is built up to be a monster but it appears to me he is a fast starter who gases as the fight progresses, he was knackered by round 5 and pushed himself through and then coasted when AGAIN that flipping stupid open scoring intervened and gave him leeway to take rounds off.

Anyway Gurov outboxed him before being stopped and Haye has the power to hurt him IMO Mormeck is beatable.

Yeah, it was to fight in Russia for a pittence though, but even so it may have been worth the risk considering Oleg is beatable.

Wrong! Mormeck will be bombed out within 5 rounds, probably way less. Mormeck is there to be hit and be hit he will. Haye has a shaky chin but it won't come into play cos Mormeck will never be given chance to get going. Haye will destroy him with ease. I know, but any fighter of his age is not in a position to turn down world title shots. Danny Williams accepted a very low purse for both Tyson and Klitschko because he saw the value in those opportunities if he won.

the carl thompson loss was sooooooo bad

also the lolenga mock right hand

all of which merely makes Haye a kind of entertaining banger in the herbie hide model

macca is the one who will make the biggest dent on the world HW stage

Hmm, not so Sure, Skelton's technique is awful, he's very easy to hit and pretty slow too, could see Haye knocking him spark out.

i think skelton's pressure would give haye a tough fight.

In fairness (and as you well know) I've been on the Audley, Haye and Froch bandwagon from day 1. Its just that I've had to defend Audley far more (he's just biding his time

Totally stupid comments by skleton IMO I don't know where he is comming from being involved in other peoples carrers like that while turning down the big fight himself. Haye is a fans boxer who likes challanging himself. My worry is that with Haye's stamina issues will he be able to withstand a pace from Mormek (and god I hope there is no open scoring).

Haye v Mormeck is so 50/50, I think its downright impossible to pick the winner - I dont know why people say Haye has a weak chin, is it due to the way Carl Thompson dropped him? - Haye gave everything he had to try to take out Thompson and yet Carl was able to take it and bide his time - You could see Haye was dead on his feet and any decent punch was enough to finish the fight off - Thompson saw his chance, took it and down went Haye - That doesnt mean his chin is weak, David had nothing left and his defense was in a shambles so a good clean punch from Thompson was all that was needed - Haye learned about pacing himself and training for long hard fights after that and has become a far better fighter because of that defeat - Skelton would be too much for Haye though and even Hayes big punches would not rock big Matt - Skelton is very fit, hard as nails and he too has learned a lot from his one defeat - In his 2nd fight against Williams he was very quick on his feet and his defense was loads better - Big Matt is the best in Britain and will prove that point quite well when he fights Sprott in their rematch - Sprott and Krence would be good fights for David Haye but Skelton would set Hayes career back so he should be avoided at all costs.

Don't you think Haye has improved and become alot more patient since the Thompson fight???

I think the loss to Carl was best thing that could have happened to Haye, he realised he wasn't superman. It slowed him down and made him more precise, plus he no longer had an 0 to defend. As someone said hes a fans boxer

Im buying into nothing that i've been told from team Haye. I draw my own conclusions. I don't need or listen to hype jobs.

Im going on what i know of Mormeck and from watching his recent fights against O'neil Bell. He looked there for the taking and a fast athletic puncher like Haye has every chance of whacking him early. Bell is lazy and sloppy and he gave Mormeck hell. Haye is accurate and precise and has the ability to make the fight easy. We'll see how 'delusional' i am after the fight. I'll be sure to remind you of this thread after the fact .

fornicate knows what Skelton is on about, the Thompson rematch is never happening and it's gone past the point of meaning anything now anyway. And the fight with Enzo is also dead in the pan, probably because Fwank would have wanted options.

As for the Mormeck fight, you have to make the Frenchman favourite, but it's a winnable fight for Haye. Haye is clearly the more powerful and skillful of the two and Mormeck is clearly the tougher of the two and they both have stamina issues. It all adds up to an interesting spectacle.
