Finally a couple of Cubans lost but I would note that they both lost to host country boxers (Venezuela).

Is it me Venceramos, or is Ecuador improving? I can't recall too many Ecuadorian amateurs from the past, but they seem to be holding their own well.

Does this tournament impact the selection process for the 2008 Olympics for any of the countries?

No impact for Olympic Games classification. All american countries (like Ecuador) are training hard for Panamerican Games.

Ecuador has had some cuban coaches and have been working well at cadet and junior level and it starts to pay off.

Check out the results from last year! Host country won everything. Nobody wants to go back to this tournament! Judging was the worst I have seen, very one sided. Even the Russian team pulled out before the finals last year in protest. I hope some of the Cubans win! These guys are not easy to ROB!

It also helps when the host country has 4 boxers per weight class (Ven, Ven-A, Ven-B and Ven-C) competing against only one boxer per weight class for every other country.

They have to fill the tournament entries somehow. Not a lot of the countries that had been there before will go again. They have to box each other now! They do have talented athletes, but their judges have very narrow vision! Competition is good for everyone, lets not scare away good competition with bad decisions. What is more important, to prepare your athletes for good competition or to win at all costs?

I'm surprised that Yordanis Despaigne lost, but he lost to a Venezuelan boxer.

Yes, he lost twice to venezuelan boxers but he's now fighting at 81kg, don't know if it's permanent.
Despaigne seemed to have lost ground to Emilio Correa and Luis Garcia Campoalegre at 75kg.
