Dumbest fighters of all time?

Post by tagjohnson »

Along with being a mean little SOB Tony Ayala always struck me in interviews as not being the brighest bulb on the Christmas tree. The same goes for Eddie Gregory and Mike Tyson.

I have no idea what that means Terry but it's funny as hell anyway.

For a guy with no proper schooling whatsoever Tyson strikes me as very intelligent.

Dumb, possibly crazy, but Joe Grim stands out in my mind.

Are we talking IQ test scores or just plain common sense? You know one does not necessarily go with the other.

Just good old fashioned dumb. The kind that doesn't need to be explained. You know the Anna Nicole Smith kind of thing. I do understand about the IQ vs common sense. Bill Clinton went to Georgetown, Oxford, and Yale and he is dumber than shit. W went to Harvard and he's.. you get the picture. No argument about Golota BTW.

No he wasn't dumb, she was dumb, she talked to a friend......he was horny.

W on the other hand, his actions and listening to him speak explain all one needs to known about his IQ or common sense. :-?

..terry is making a reference to the term "deaf and dumb".....and yes..there were fighters with this affliction. Best known to american fans probably was eugene "silent" hairston....the more polite nick name...for "Dummy" Hairston. he's been written about on this format before....sometimes by me. he was a good fighter..check his record on box rec. in new york special lights were put on each ring post that lit up when the bell ended the round. in other venues the referee would just step in and pat the fighters on the back. if you catch one of his fights with jake lamotta you'll hear the referee advise his handlers what the signal would be....and the opponent was told to step back and drop his hands and indicate he was going to his corner...that the round was over.

here is an incident i wrote about a long time back. i don't recall who the fighter was, but near...not at..the end of a round he stepped back and turned slightly to his corner. when hairston did the same....the round not really being over, his opponent whacked him with a beauty as hairston did the same and turned away. i saw the fight , but can't remember the nasty son of a bitch, but the crowd booed and yelled and he was lucky not to get lynched.

mario d'gato....I don't even know if the spelling is close...was deaf. Fitzie Fitzpatrick...tough light heavy was partially deaf and would have kayoed my hero if ezzard hadn't gotten along count...in cincinnati...and charles knocked him flat in a subsequent round. walter hafer....heavyweight....was partially deaf, though i don't know the level of his handicap. (just remembered as i typed his hame....ezzard charles knocked him out too.)

maybe not the dumbest fighter, but one of the funniest dumb comments was by tony janiro when he met vice president harry truman. truman came up to him at the end of a fight and told tony how much he enjoyed his performance and said he really liked the fight. when truman walked away, tony said to his manager...."gee...aint that great...imagine the vice president of madison square garden coming up and saying that to me."

golata? no...he gives dumbness a bad name. he'snot dumb..he's nuts.
maxie rosenbloom made a career out of playing a dumb punchy ex fighter in movies and in nightclubs, but that was an act. those who knew him say he was a smart enough cookie and had a great sense of humor.

if u look at Tysons classic interview with Harry carpenter in the 80's you will see an articulate, polite, intelligent Tyson with a infectious thirst to learn more about the history of a sport that touched him on a profound emotional level

exactly, Tyson's actually pretty damn bright, it's all just overshadowed by the fact that he's a bit crazy, I remember reading in Ring magazine about socially-deviant fighters and they said that doctors said that Tyson's brain has a physical abnormality where he is unable to inhibit pervasive thoughts or a primeval or primitive nature, like urges for violence etc. I think it's true personally as it could explain a lot of the troubles he's encountered in his lifetime as well as how he blew so much of his money, I mean if you had no ability to inhibit your urges I'm sure you guys would be buying all kinds of crazy shit that might've simply come to you in a brief whim with your mountain of cash.

I'm sorry guys but Bill Clinton is dumber than dirt. He's just one of those those guys that can stand there and sound smooth and polished but the minute you get him away from his case workers, uh handlers, uh aides, he steps in it. Remember "it depends on what your definition of is is?" He really thought that was profound, along with talking about having sex with a mummy, and why he had astro turf in the back of his El Camino. Ghost written auotbiographies do not make up for that. Leon "$1.64 worth of cocaine" Spinks definitely wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer. And I still say Tyson was dumb. Being able to give cliched answers to cliched questions from sportswriters does not an intellect make.

..terry.. a most interesting speculation. i never thought about the ear/balance problem until you mentioned it here. the only deaf mute i saw fight several times was hairston and i seeing a few classic boixing reprises of the fights i saw live just reinforced what i remembered.....he was a pretty good all arund fighter....combined smooth boxing with a decent punch, fought a lot of quality opponents and gave a good account of himself.....no balance problems that i could see.

does anyone have anything to add to this? and i don't mean what country deaf fighters have the most success in, or bill clinton's i.q. or any of that other crap.

I don't want to go through the list, but in terms of modern day fighters Wayne Braithwaite is an idiot... fighting southpaw in two fights in a row for no reason (he's orthodox) and getting his ass kicked both times...

Mayorga...

Zab Judah... in numerous ways...

Thanks for that post. Interesting. Do you know if the affliction affected his balance at all? Or did it make a difference when he got clipped on the ear area? With your inner ear affecting balance and such I wondered if it would be possible for a deaf person tobox effectively.

I guess it is.

Tag', I was making a reference to the term deaf, dumb and blind. Sorry if it offended anyone with deaf friends, just don't let them read it and we will get away with it.
read it to them, we'll be fine...

We're talking about boxers, not rocket scientists. Would you rather have a tough champ or a smart guy? Tyson wasn't the smartest guy in the world but he was the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, and a guy you wouldn't casually mess w/.

WRONG! He regained his title in 1996 with a 3rd round stoppage over Frank Bruno, then added another with a 1st round win over Bruce Seldon.

Can't be too dumb, can he?

Yeah, but you also think that Andrew Golota's one of the top 80 heavyweights of all time. Admit it. You have a soft spot for retards. Do you have a child with Down's Syndrome or something?
I guess so; why otherwise would I reply time and again so kindly to you.
