Hopefully this list increases by at least 50 more boxers by the start of the tournament. There are some names that I was hoping to see that aren't on this list yet.

The list is already updated - impressive. A few more names were added which is good (a couple of the names I was hoping to see are there, but some are still missing). I still hope there are at least 120 entries once the tourney registration ends this Sunday (or by the Competition weigh-in of Monday morning).

It will be interesting to see how well Diego Hurtado (2004 olympic team runner-up) do, and @ 132 most likely Stan Martyniouk won't be going to the Trials
Since he has the regionals this weekend (he is the strong favor to win it).

Well that could also eliminate a few of the other boxers I predicted including Venegas, Livingston and Saxon. There are also a few new names on the list of boxers who will compete for the title - Jamal James, Javonn Barnes, Javontae Starks and Akeem Holland.

I expect a few more who failed to qualify from the Eastern trials to appear on this list (Chris Green,Robbie Burwell,Dennis Hasson) but as of now here's who I got.

106)Diego Hurtardo
112)Daniel Roman
119)Sergio Perales
125)Efrain Esquivias
132)Enrique Nieves
141)Mike Faragon
152)Demetrio Soto
165)Dominic Wade
178)Dennis Hasson
201)Andres Taylor
201+)Excell Holmes

Edited picks after posting of final entries, looks like some big names expected to show did not as mentioned earlier.

Hasson is now on the list. I also expect to see a few more guys from the Rocky Mountain and western states to enter including Shawn Nichol (119) who lost a close bout to Derrick Wilson and Efrain Esquivias (125) who lost a close bout to Mark Davis in the semi-finals of the Eastern Trials. There are many others too and I would hope that they give it one last try at the Western Trials. Some East coast and midwest guys should also give it one last try including Dante Moore who lost a close bout early in the Eastern Trials to the eventual champ at 165.

It will be interesting to see how Jessie Correa does at 165#. He boxed my son at 201# at the 2005 Nat'l J.O. tourney and then moved down to 178# for last year's GG. Now he is down to 165# and I probably wouldn't even recognize him.

Hello Dennis. I see your most recent post states that registration is allowed up until 5pm. The packet stated that all entries must be received by May 15th-NO EXCEPTIONS. I may have missed out on something here. I spoke with Jeff at USABoxing and he informed me that I could fax my entry in this past Monday. Well, I did and I have yet to see my name on the participation list. Therefore, I cancelled my hotel and flight thinking that I missed the deadline. Seems like some bad communication taking place. I hope and pray I haven't missed my last chance at the U.S. Championships

My understanding is that the entry forms and other documents had to be sent in by May 15th, but the boxer had to register at the headquarters hotel no later than 5 pm today so that the brackets could be made tonight. The boxers then have to make weight on the days they compete.
If you faxed your entry form, you should have checked to make sure they received it and then question why your name wasn't on the list. The bad communication is always a problem.

Thanks for posting this list Mel. I am shocked that there are only 5 boxers in the 132# class. Normally the 132# class is loaded with boxers and there were 16 boxers on the list as of 5/17/07.

There are too many qualifiers this year with too little time between them. I think that a lot of the boxers just didn't have any more money or time. My honest belief is that we need to to go back to just the Easterns and Westerns. I'd also like to see us return to the Championships in March, with qaulifiers to follow and then the Trials. Shoot - the Pan Am team will just be getting back as the Trials are due to begin. I sincerely hope the Trials (Box-offs) are the second or third week in August. BTW, rumor has it that they will be in Miami.

I agree with you Mel about the qualifying process. This years process is not ideal and was due to the situation with Michael King/A2P wanting the US Championships in June. I sincerely hope we go back to the old procedure for the 2012 Olympics.
Miami in August - wow that sounds HOT and HUMID.

Olympic qualifiers

Mel and Dennis, It seems that the two of you do are do a lot of descuission and I am brand new at this (form) so bear with me. I read a lot of your coments and finally got the nerve to try to jump in. I hope you don't mind. Miami heat vs Co altitude. at least you won't have to spend a fortune aclumating to have a shot against the team that USA Boxing sends out to get ready.

Different points of view and open dialogue about amateur boxing is a good thing so go ahead and jump in.

It does seem like a little more even playing field at sea level, I have my boy up in the rockies and will be leaving sat to meet him and get one more week of training before going down into Co Springs. I really enjoy reading the diolog between you guys as I am pretty well up on most things you talk about.
