..i think pundit is making a valid point here....some are confusing intelligence with education.....a fighter or anyone for that matter may come across as stupid because he misuses the language or can't do basic math..because he never had the opportunity of a decent...or even half decent education.....but he may have innate intelligence....even be a little nuts. i have no way of really knowing, but i've always felt that this could be true of tyson. wild uncontrolled youth....made rich when he was too young to handle it...and he is on medication, which is given to those who have chemical imbalance problems rather than those who are just stupid.
if there were pills to help those who are just dumb there are many on this forum, like..........(insert name of choice) for example, would go broke just getting their prescriptions.

Objectionable lifestyle does not equal stupidity. Nor does criminal behaviour.
Whenever I have seen Tyson interviewed or read anything by people who have spoken to him, he comes across as being fairly articulate (moreso than another champion who has not taken as many blows to the head, PBF) and by all accounts is a keen boxing historian, like many of the posters on here.
Decagon seems to want to be the new tunasaladsandwiches, or the new Zelenoff. When I joined this forum he was well spoken and I cannot recall any threads ruined by crass insensitive remarks. Now we have had several recently.
What's up Dec? Why the change?

They have backgorund, though, those two, so it's a bit misleading to just throw that statement up in the air without mentioning that.MEISINGER wrote:a direct quote from teddy atlas
''the only people dumber than tyson are his fans, pathetic''
"Tyson, painfully insecure about his appearance and the way he spoke, was given carte blanche by D'Amato. This was never more apparent than when he grabbed at trainer Teddy Atlas's 12-year-old niece. A confrontation between D'Amato's star trainer and his last shot at heavyweight glory resulted in a gun being put in Tyson's face. The next day Atlas was gone and the seeds of entitlement were planted in Tyson's teenage mind."
I'm glad someone has posted something about D'Amato's indulgence of Tyson. I take it that this is a quote from a biography?!?!?~ MIKEE ~ wrote:They have backgorund, though, those two, so it's a bit misleading to just throw that statement up in the air without mentioning that.MEISINGER wrote:a direct quote from teddy atlas

Tyson's problems were always there. Cus did his best to paper over them. Tyson was an emotional man, paid handsomely for fighting in the ring but unable to stop himself from throwing a punch at Mitch Green in the street. He took the emotional intensity into his fights but it always gave passage to the mental fragility and self-doubt that stowed away beneath the 'bad intentions'.
I don't like to call fighters stupid, or dumb. They are athletes who are supposed to fight for money not write disseratations on 'The New School'.
We can all say stupid things particularly in the heat of the moment. I'll enjoy the quotes but not belittle the quoted.
Its from ESB i think, but I have a Tyson Biog and the episode is even more detailed in there. The problem I think is that Tyson was nurtured by D'Amato as Cus' last chance for proxy-glory, and he could not afford to have the kid get disillusioned, depressed, whatever.Ezzard wrote:I'm glad someone has posted something about D'Amato's indulgence of Tyson. the best example i know of is when Tyson complained to D'Amato about not being able to get a girl, D'Amato went away and came back with a stick, andf told Tyson when he was champ hed need it to beat the girls off him... dangerous stuff to tell emotionally vulnerable/immature ppl...
Some minds can be led astray by the happenstance of it all and have come to popular yet flawed conclusions. It is clear that Archie went on for many years dominating the competition while Ezz's star faded. It was just a matter of timing that set up for this illusion.Decagon wrote:Archie Moore was Ezzard Charles's bitch.BoxBuzz wrote:it always warms my heart to see the harmony that exists in these hallowed halls
Don't feel bad, many have been lured into this "lazy" assumption. I encourage you to use your mind to climb to greater heights where you can see the "Truth" uncluttered by facts conveniently assessed out of their proper context.

I wouldn't put Tyson is this category.tagjohnson wrote:Along with being a mean little SOB Tony Ayala always struck me in interviews as not being the brighest bulb on the Christmas tree. The same goes for Eddie Gregory and Mike Tyson.
He is a fairly intelligent fellow, all said & done.
