I'm glad you enjoy it. Who is your boxer? Some boxers say the altitude affects them a lot while others don't seem to be bothered at all. It supposedly is worse for endurance activities like marathons, bicycle races, etc.

I'll let you know if I enjoy them or not. 8) Last nigtht's 4 bouts were novice level sloppy: wrestling, hanging on the ropes, running. Ugh. So far, touristing in SLC has been more interesting. :box:

Walter Sarnoi will be competing at the Championships on the NMU at large team, he found out yesterday. Will be interesting to see what he does here.

If he competes at the Western Trials and loses he should not be allowed to compete in the US Championships. He should bow out of the Western Trials now that he knows he has an at-large bid.

What's the difference between other boxers who have already qualified and who are competing in other tournaments, and Walter?

Mel - if I was there I would be looking forward to the bout between Justin Jones and Abodurin Akinyanju. I think that should be a good super-heavy bout. However, knowing you normally disdain the big fellas I'm sure you won't appreciate it as much as I would. Let me know what you think of Shawn Nichol as he should defeat Haro. I remember watching Nichol box at the '04 Nat'l JO tourney. I will also be curious about what you think of Sergio Perales as I remember him very well from the '04 National JO tourney. Dominic Wade is another young gun who I saw at the '05 National JO's and I wait to hear what you think about him. If you see any other notables tonight please let us know.

Oh, I may "disdain" the big guys, but I will watch them - promise.
I've known Shawn Nichol, and Rick Lopez, since he was a kid and definitely have an interest in how he looks and does. I think Shawn and Rickly are the cream of the 119'ers here. I saw Dominic last year at the JOs, too, and will be watching to see how he does here since he's had a rough time qualifying this year. He's a really good kid.

Mel - don't forget about Sergio Perales. You have to put him in there with Nichol and Lopez as one of the favorites at 119#. I'm glad that you will watch the big boys and let us know what you think.

Okey doke. First off, Walter Sarnoi did pull out of the Westerns - he's flying to Colorado Springs on Saturday to join the NMU team.

119 - Shawn Nichol decisioned Jose Haro 25-61. Shawn has good technique but not a great deal of power. He throws pretty fast punches.

119 - Rick Lopez stopped a very outclassed Oscar Vasquez-Reyes 20-40. Rick had too much power and too many skills. He knew how to press the action.

119 - Christopher Avalos stopped Adrian Gutierrez on a retirement in round 4. He was up 59-40. He was not impressive; had an opponent who made him look decent.

119 - Sergio Perale3s stopped Jazzme Hogue on an RSCOS (5-26) in round 2. He has excellent power and I was really impressed with his skills. I look for him and Lopez to be in the finals in an excellent match. He and Lopez have very much the same style and power.

132 - Roberto Vargas stopped Emanuel Medina on a RSCOS in the 2nd round. The score was 29-9. Emanual hasn't had much open experience and Vargas is a brawler who swarmed him.

165 - Peyton Boyea dec. Ian Mauleon, 23-10. Yawn. Sloppy.

165 - Dominic Wade stopped Michaek Valenzuela in the 2nd round on a RSCOS (30-10). In spite of the lack of quality in the opponent, Dominic looked good.

165 - Stepan Zeytunyan stopped Rudy Cutnose on RSCOS in the 2nd round (1-21). Ugly bout; Stepan is very awkward and his skill level isn't bvery high.

165 - Kelly Buchanan decisioned George Carter, 23-10 or something like that (I can't read my own writing).

Providing his opponents' styles and lack of experience don't deter Wade, he should win this weight class. He looked good.

201 - Andres Taylor stopped Duncan Hunter, RSCH-2. Score was 12-0, Taylor. Hunter was no competition.

201 - Javier Torres stopped Victor Arriola, RSC-3 (39-22). Torres just too tall with a long reach aned Torres just couldn't work around it.

201 - Excell Holmes dec. Juan Rivera in a bout that went back and fourth in scoring all four rounds, with Holmes pulling out a 49-46 win. Yawn.

201 - Justin Jones dec. Abodurin Akinyanju 56-53 in a bout that was spent mostly on the ropes and in the corners. Ugly, sloppy, slapping bout of attrition between two out-of-shape guys. I have to give them credit for going all 4 rounds. Definitely was not pretty.

I think Taylor has the most skills, but anything can happen in this weight class. None of them are going to the Olympics.

We're splitting into two rings tomorrow so I'll only get to see those boxers in my ring.

Mel - 2 of the bouts you listed were super-heavy bouts not 201. I am very surprised at the scoring of the Jones-Akinyanju bout of 59-56. Wow that is a high score for 201+ guys. Especially as you said they were in an "ugly, sloppy, slapping bout of attrition between two out of shape guys". They went 4 rounds so they can't be that out of shape. Remember some big guys carry a lot of unnecessary fat, but that does not necessarily mean they are out of shape. NO SELF-RESTRAINT, LACK OF DISCIPLINE, etc. probably. I think a lot of super-heavy guys would do much better by getting their body fat in check. They don't need to get down to 6%, but 12-15% would be nice. A lot of these guys are probably well over 30%.

Sorry. It was late when I typed my stuff.
I am very surprised at the scoring of the Jones-Akinyanju bout of 59-56. Wow that is a high score for 201+ guys.
Hate to say this, but the judges were counting slaps.
They went 4 rounds so they can't be that out of shape.
Dennis, it was painful to watch. They were throwing haymakers and looping slaps at the slowest rate of speed I've seen. They were going on sheer adrenalin - plus they were holding on a lot, mainly just to stay upright. Akinyanju is a large person and, yes, could lose weight. Jones could lose a bit, too, but neither one were baby whales.

Stacey Harrington is in my ring; Ryan is not.

Mel - That is great. Stacy is like an adopted son to me as I have known him for 8 years or so. His parents are great and support his boxing. He and Jordan have boxed many times which we hate as they are like brothers. They were roommates several times at tournaments and camps. I really hope Stacy shows his skills and wins the Western Trials and goes to Colorado Springs with Jordan. I will wait to read your comments on his bout.

All my picks have advanced to the semis so I guess it is so far so good. I expect a couple may exit tomorrow as things look to tighten up and there does look to be some parity in some weights.

Okay - in my ring:

125 - Raynell Williams dec. Victor Valenzuela, 30-20. Williams has good style and some decent power.

125 - Daniel Martinez dec. Rene Anaya, 28-30. In a back-and-forth match between two So. Calif. boxers, Martinez pulled it out in the fourth round. He was not impressive and should be eliminated soon, depending on his opponent. Williams will cream him.

141 - Mike Faragon dec. Milton Ramos, 32-34. Another back and forth, with good boxing and punches that were easy to see. Faragon has some decent power.

141 - Michael Concepcion dec. George Newkirk, 18-9. Both needed to be "cautioned" in the first round to box. Nothing like waiting too long, which Newkirk did the entire bout. He has the height and the reach but just can't get it going.

152 - Demetrio Soto over Jeremy Ramos, RSCOS-3 (31-12 / 1:59). Soto was just the better, more aggressive boxer. Boring bout.

152 - Rodrigo Garcia dec. Jovontae Starks, 27-50. Garcia, a former JO champ, still getting the rust off. He's doing okay.

178 - Lionell Thompson over Jesus Berelleza on RSCOS-3 (31-12 / 1:59).
Berelleza just doesn't have any power.

178 - Michael Ortiz over Stacy Harrington, RET-4 (22-28 / 1:08). Ortiz was the better, more focused boxer. Harrington was holding, pushing his punches; he made it a very sloppy bout. The ropes got very loose due to a problem with the ring. Harrington had Ortiz against the ropes, leaned into Ortiz, and they both fell over the ropes onto the apron. Harrington hurt his, I thiink, left hand. He went back to his corner after they got off the canvas, turned his back to the center of the ring and basically quit. I did tell Harrington hello from you, Dennis. He, and his coach, both appreciated that.

I've got Ryan Schmidt on my ring tomorrow, so I'll be able to see him. :D

Stepan is one of the nicest guys in the whole world and I really do love him - as a person. As a boxer, he has a bad pro style - he doesn't keep his hands up and he does some really funny feet work. He is extremely awkward. His kickboxing experience definietly explains why he doesn't have an Olympic-style boxing style. The "world championships" is the name given to the annual non-advancing Ringside tournament in Kansas. It is not an AIBA sanctioned world event. There is no #11 USAB ranking and he did not participate in any Olympic trials.

Mel - thanks for the info. I talked to Stacy and his wrist is injured and in a cast now. He couldn't continue because of the injury.
I agree that Raynell Williams is very talented. I thought he maybe had won his bout with Hylon Williams (who is also very talented) at the 2007 Nat'l GG. It was a 3-2 split. In the 2004 Nat'l JO he and Sergio Perales put on an excellent bout which I though Williams had won ever so slightly. However, the score was 16-15 for Perales. Williams seems to be getting better and trying not to lose those types of close bouts anymore.
I look forward to your comments on Ryan Schmidt's bout.

FRIDAY'S SEMIFINAL BOUTS. Any predictions?

106: Jesus Aguilera, Los Alamos, Calif. vs. Diego Hurtado, Reno, Nev.

112: Suanitu Hoague, Albuquerque, N.M. vs. Jerry Guevara, Brownsville, Texas

119: Shawn Nichol, Lakewood, Colo. vs. Rick Lopez, Brighton, Colo.
Christopher Avalos, Lancaster, Calif. vs. Sergio Perales, Los Fresnos, Texas
Comment: Nichol v. Lopez should be a good one. They have probably boxed each other in the past since they are both from Colorado.

125: Efrain Esquivias, Torrance, Calif. vs. Raynell Williams, Cleveland, Ohio
Ryan Schmidt, Grand Rapids, Mich. vs. Daniel Martinez, Covina, Calif.
Comment: Esquivias v. Williams should be a barn burner.

132: Carlos Arce, Los Angeles, Calif. vs. Enrique Nievas, Phoenix, Ariz.
Jeffrey Salas, E. Carbon, Utah vs. Roberto Vargas, Santa Ana, Calif.

141: Jamal James, Minneapolis, Minn. vs. Mike Faragon, Schenectady, N.Y.
Michael Concepcion, E. Orange, N.J. vs. Kevin Barger, Foster City, Calif.
Comment: I expect James v. Faragon to be a hard hitting affair.

152: Arturo Crespin, Las Vegas, N.M. vs. Demetrio Soto, Los Angeles, Calif.
Enver Halili, Weatherford, Texas vs. Rodrigo Garcia, Santa Ana, Calif.
Comment: I like to see Crespin advancing. My son Jordan boxed him to win the 2001 Nat'l Jr. GG. That seems like forever ago. Arturo is a nice kid.

165: Peyton Boyea, Sacramento, Calif. vs. Dominic Wade, Largo, Md.
Stepan Zeytunyan, Aurora, Colo. vs. Kelly Max Buchanan, Teague, Texas

178: Mike Montoya, Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo. vs. Lionell Thompson, Buffalo, N.Y.
Dennis Hasson, Philadelphia, Pa. vs. Michael Ortiz, Moreno Valley, Calif.
Comment: Both of these bouts should be good ones.

201: Michael Dubowsky, Calif. vs. Akeem Holland, San Mateo, Calif.
Andres Taylor, Johnstown, Pa. vs. Javier Torres, Medford, Ore.
Comment: I expect Taylor and Holland to advance. We'll see.

201+: Excell Holmes, Amherst, N.Y. vs. Justin Jones, Houston, Texas
Tyler Turner, Lynchburg, Va. vs. Tim Washington, Toledo, Ohio
Comment: Mel might not like these bouts, but I'm sure I would enjoy them. These seem to be evenly matched bouts and in this division one punch can end it.
