British Heavyweight Prospects

Post by Mukel »

Just been having a look through the british rankings on boxrec,
and just wondered what some of you guys thought of the prospects
at heavyweight, can anyone tell me anything about these guys stylistally and talent wise:

Sam Sexton
Chris Burton
Martin Rogan
Ian Millarvie
Derek Chisora
David Dolan (remember him being a good amateur, small though)
Scott Belshaw (maloney compared him to foreman, surely thats a joke)

and also i mentioned in another thread, anybody know if David Price is planning on turning pro anytime soon?

I've seen Burton fight in the flesh – very, very fast hands for a big-man. He seems to have decent power; he stopped decent Paul Butlin in four, and that's good form.

I hope Belshaw can do well, being a second-generation Irishman it would be good if we could have a heavyweight to compete with the best.

But in all honesty the names you have mentioned are probably confined to mixing with the best in Britain and Commonwealth. Can't really see any world-beaters.

I didnt expect any of them to be world beaters,
but with skeltons advanced age, Williams mentioned retirement
not so long back etc, just want to get an idea of who will be on the scene in the future in the british mix, could any of them do anything
on the european scene, or are they simply domestic at best?

Belshaw needs alot of work, he's powerful, but is very raw, throws wide swinging hooks with his chin up in the air. If he's brought on correctly he may get to British title.

To be honest I can't see any of those being as good as Scott Gammar let alone making any impact past the Brit scene.
What has happened to Dolan, after an excellent amateur career he has barely fought in the pro's, is he injured or in nick?

Ian Millarvie is always touted as the best thing since sliced bread and there's been good noises coming from the US when he was training there. However, even at this early stage of his career it looks as if the big man is gonna be somewhat injury plagued. Got the talent apparently but doubt he will ever get the chance to fulfil his potential if the injuries keep dogging him like this.

Ive heard the Milarvie is decent, but he had a really close fight in the states recentley didnt he?

Isnt Chisora an aba champion and a warren fighter?

Price is aiming to qualify for Beijing.
After that,I fully expect him to go pro.
He is the best on the amateur scene right now(by some distance)in Britain, and when he turns over, will be too much for any of the names mentioned above.

Having said that,I still would'nt back him to go a lot further than the British title as a pro.

Our only genuine prospect(on the world level) in my opinion at heavyweight over the next few years is Haye.

Shakey the further up the ladder he seems to go.

He was felled a few times by an Indian in the Commonwealth's last year. He did well to comeback and stop him, though. That was a great turn-around.

He does seem to be a bit fragile. But he did humble hyped Tyson Fury last year in the early stages of the North West's ABA’s.

A good stylist who doesn’t hold the greatest shot – to sum him up.

Price also has a decent dig, and is a pretty massive bloke in the mold of Wlad Klit. He isn't what you would call explosive however.

This may be more to do with the amateur style however, as there are few explosive bouts in the amateurs these days.

I've been impressed with Price's workrate in his bouts, he tends to throw a lot of shots, at the ABA finals Price threw more shots in one round that most of the fighters there threw in the entire fight, and for a super heavyweight that's quite impressive.

His fragility seems the biggest stumbling block, but perhaps they can get him to tuck that chin in a bit and improve his chances as a pro, I've still got some hopes for Price, I've seen something about him which impresses me, not quite sure what it is, but I've a feeling he could be a very good pro if he's with the right trainer.

David Dolan was very disappointing on his pro debut. He looked as if he had a lot of work still to do, and he might be better suited as a cruiserweight. He's in the right hands with Poxon, though.

Fury medalled in the world juniors and is the son of Gypsy John Fury, but was schooled in his senior bout with Price.
However he is still young and inexperienced and looks a good prospect

For young Tyson to even be competitive with Price, ABA champion, Commonwealth Gold, etc, at such a young age is an indication of the talent the youngster possesses.

I hear Fury would like a rematch with Price. He feels that he has learned sufficiently from the first fight to be good enough to win this time around.

You can’t fault the lad’s confidence.

I believe that Neil Fannan, who got the best out of Michael Hunter, now trains Dolan, as I’m sure you are fully aware of. But Fight Academy still promote him, or that’s what I’m led to believe.

Fannan also trains Chris Burton, who impressed me when he thumped Paul Butlin before Christmas.

I wasn't fully aware of that, which shows how easy it is to lose touch when you move behind the Iron Curtain. I think that Fannon can bring a lot to the table, especially when it comes to fitness and hunger. But Poxon has a tremendous reputation for a young man and seems to be the up-and-comer of the training world.

But it's difficult to judge which trainer is best for any given fighter.

Hmm, don't hold much hope of Bellew being our savior, he's very raw.

I couldn't agree more.

Tony is a decent fighter but has been found out when he has stepped out of the perimeters of domestic level. He isn't even the best heavyweight in England anymore; Danny Price outpointed him in the ABA final.

He can punch – certainly – but relies on that far too much. Still, I hear he is planning to fight at cruiserweight or even light-heavy when he turns pro.

His fight at the ABA finals was abysmal as well, the two of them did practicalyl fekk all for the entire fight, bellew occasionally launched a wild bowling style overhand right.
