Ken Goff Classic - USA v Canada

Post by Dennis »

The US team did very well against Canada recently. I was very happy to see most of the boxers on the US squad win in an international dual. Great job guys!

Dennis, They did a great job and I am proud to say that my boy was on that team. It was a good mix of kids that had a very good enery between them. You know whatthey say "if you want to achievs something surround yourself with like minded people.

Well then Hal, I have seen your boy box. I saw him box at the Midwestern Trials including his championship bout against Shawn Porter.

How was Fernando's bout against Dominic Wade at the state or regional Golden Gloves? Is that the only time those two have boxed?

Your boy and my boy are in the same situation at the US Championships. They have to win 2 or 3 bouts to make it to the quarter-finals in order to be eligible for the Olympic Trials.

Dennis, My charactor really gets tested when I speak of that bout. Taking about it puts me in a postion that makes me into one of those wining coaches that say "We was robbed" truth is I would much rather you ask anyone there including the our opponents supportors. Lord knows enough of them called my cell that night to register thiere shame in being from that place on that night. Me, I just use it as a spring board to the next level. There is a higher power and if that higher power felt that we needed something to push us harder.....I thank him cause that one did it. Hope you understand. Lets just say we're rooting for hime to make it to Co.

I understand Hal. Dominic won and Mel thinks he should win the Western Trials so you might get your wish on a rematch in Colorado Springs.

Dennnis, The truth is we don't focus on any one person except the one in the other corner. If he is the one fine, if not fine. It is too easy getting hung up on that stuff and in the amateurs. It is in my estamation so much harder than the pros in that you can face five entirely different styles and size guys. Left handers hard chargers, dancers, and everything in between. If you start focusing on one guy and you might not to him because of that.

Hal - you are correct. That is why the luck of the draw is so important. Many boxing fans just don't understand how hard it is for a boxer to compete at the hightest level day after day for 5 days straight. As you said, possibly facing a different style each day.

usa's

Dennis, Dominique is a good young boxer with a solid shot at winning the westerns tonight. But he will have a tough row to hoe in the USA Championships. 1. I think it's fair to said that for the most part, talent wained in Salt Lake as you would think it should being the last qualifier. 2 he has had problems with dealing with a mans power and 3. the gruling scheduel of the GG's, the Easterns and the Westerns with the travel and the bouts, take a tremedous toll. Lets just say, If he gets the job done at the USA's, he will surely deserve it. Dennis Hasson as well.

Hal - you are correct that some boxers have boxed and traveled a lot over the last few months. Mike Faragon is another guy in that category. He boxed in the MW Trials, National GG, Eastern Trials and now the Western Trials. I'm sure there are others too.

They and thier coaches and deserve a lot of respect, especially when in most cases there is little to no funds to help with the cost. I worked for 15 years before I could take my wife away for a week. Yet this year alone will be approx 5 weeks gone due to boxing. Last year was about the same. It's truly a wonder that I still have a wife to take on vacation when the time does come.

You have a mistress named boxing. She has so many "guys" that she steals.
