SN running away from Kessler?

Post by Twinkle Toes »

Some quite startling qutoes from Palle:

Mikkel Kessler's camp has accused promoter allegedly of shielding Joe Calzaghe from a super-fight with his Danish super middleweight rival.

Calzaghe has the WBO title but Kessler holds both the WBA and WBC crowns.

Kessler's promoter Mogens Palle says that Warren, who is also negotiating for a fight against Jermain Taylor, has not stuck to an original offer.

"Warren's proposal was $5m, but when we met last week in London his offer had suddenly fallen to $3m," Palle said.

The Calzaghe camp has also offered $4m to Taylor, but the American WBC and WBO middleweight champion is holding out for at least $6m.

However, US television is thought to favour a domestic showdown with Kelly Pavlik, who impressed on the undercard of Taylor's lacklustre split-decision win over Cory Spinks last weekend.

That would leave Kessler as the other leading big-name for Calzaghe to next face, probably in September, although he is also interested in facing the winner of Bernard Hopkins' showdown with Winky Wright in January.

"Kessler is a good fighter. Frank has been talking to his promoter over the last few days, trying to do something with him," Calzaghe confirmed.

"But I think that fight may be six months or more down the road. Kessler is not a big name in America.

Mikkel Kessler cannot be compared to a bum like Jermain Taylor from the United States

Promoter Mogens Palle

"He's had a couple of good wins but in his last fight he beat Markus Beyer, who was shot.

"We can go down the Kessler road but Taylor is the one for me."

Palle says that he has offered Calzaghe a healthy pay-day to fight Kessler in Copenhagen, but that he was turned down flat by Warren.

"I said to him: 'Listen, to come here I offer you $5m net plus the British TV', but he said there is no way that Joe will come to Denmark," Palle told BBC Sport Wales.

"So I said that for the same terms we will come to the UK, because Mikkel Kessler doesn't mind where he fights Calzaghe - but we are far apart.

"Warren doesn't say 'net' and he doesn't say '$5m' in his offer."

Palle is adamant that Kessler, whose two belts hold equal weight in the boxing world with Calzaghe's WBO title, must be suitably rewarded if any fight takes place in the UK.

"If Calzaghe wants to fight in his backyard then this is something that Kessler has to be paid for, as he has the two most prestigious titles," Palle added.

"I don't give much for the WBO title, though Calzaghe has defended it 20 times.

"I can easily get Kessler to defend his titles 40 times! He can fight once a week and beat opponents like that.

"The chances of the fight happening in September are entirely up to allegedly because we are giving him the chance.

"He has tried everything else to avoid Kessler, for sure, we can prove that in black and white.

"Kessler cannot be compared to a bum like Taylor from the United States.

"That is not the first pathetic fight. I mean, everyone said it was a fantastic fight when Calzaghe fought Jeff Lacy, but Lacy was another pathetic fighter who couldn't fight.

"Why should Warren pay a guy like Taylor a lot more than Kessler who is 10 times better?"

HBO are the money men and if they want Taylor-Pavlik they will get it, whcih leaves us with this cracking super middleweight fight. This would make up for all the years Calzaghe didn't settle things with Sven Ottke but will we see it. Will we hell. Huge dissapointment and if the best don't fight the best once again it;s going to be a travesty.

Why won't Warren let his fighters travel?

Most promoters want to keep a tight control over the purse strings, and having the promotion at home is the best way of doing this. There are also issues with sparring, training camps, facilities, accomodation which are much harder to ensure are seamless when they are abroad.

allegedly though does seem particularly averse to his fighters travelling overseas.

I tell you what, I would not mind seeing Kessler vs Abrham or Pavlik, but the 186 division IS full of enough talent for him and JC, just only Kessler is fighting them...

Calzaghe's really allowing himself to fall into obscurity.

true, ONE PROMOTER IS MUCH LIKE ANOTHER THESE DAYS

Funny how if FW speaks we cannot dispute it, if someone dares to think someone is plausible however...

Obscurity might be the wrong word, infamy is closer. He will end up like Ottke, and Hopkins - good fighter, didnt travel, could have done more...

and i dont think that 'could have done more' is an evaluation that can be argued with (tho i invite the attempt of 'insiders')

Who in the world of boxing promotion is truly credible?

It's all smoke and mirrors, you never know who to believe in these instances. All promoters talk bollocks, it's part of the job of being a promoter to talk bollocks and try and make the other party look like the ones who are making matters difficult.

It's all extremely tedious.

I'd rather we heard nothing at all from promoters and that the fights just happened. These days there's almost as much material produced on websites about negotiations as there is on fight reports.

money.

if he stages it over here he gets more than taking his man overseas.

he must have made fortunes out of that last cardiff show.

i get fed up with every story on the negotiations.

behave like businessmen and sort it out behind closed doors.

it's pathetic.

they should be able to sort this out and deliver for the fans.

instead of that there just blaming each other.

it's not good enuff.

It really is risible stuff from both organisations. What should be sensible business negotiations between two men hoping to make a bunch of money for themselves and the boxers they represent has turned into little more than the kind of 'ya boo sucks' exchange you might find from two snotty nosed, silver-spoon, kindergarten rivals.

Really, the art of negotiation is flexibility and an open-minded approach that can lead to a win-win situation for all parties concerned. But both men are so entrenched in their own positions that the fight won't happen. They're as bad as eachother.

Do they not realise that the fight will lead to huge exposure -- and a reputation as 'The Man' to aim at for every fighter who weighs between 155 and 175 lbs -- for the winner?

Both managers are treating it as the be-all-and-end-all, the ultimate target in itself, rather than the potential springboard to superstardom it should be.

I mean, come on, between 6-10 million dollars, plus a massive upside for the winner must be a strong incentive to make it happen. But no: both men want the fight entirely on their terms, and so it won't happen.

And what makes it worse is that this whole, depressing affair has been played out like a case study from 'Airing Your Dirty Laundry in Public' by Freddie Shepherd.

I say fornicate them. I'm sick of it. Let Kessler take a meaningless second fight with fancy-but-flawed Mundine for a fraction of what he could earn from Calzaghe, and let Joe fight whichever no-mark Frank chooses as WBO mandatory for relative peanuts.

Let's just hope they don't bring the rest of boxing down with them.

Can Pavlik bring more than 4 mill to the table even with HBO backing? Taylor is holding out but surely his payday for Pavlik would be far less than one against Calzaghe. Both are dangerous fights, but surely Calzaghe is more lucrative money wise.

I'm not overly sure about that. Pavlik's style, and the manner of his win against Miranda, will count for a lot and put backsides on seats. Calzaghe might be the the more decorated fighter, but is he the most saleable name at the moment in the States?

How old is Calzaghe? He must be around 37. I think JC has only one hard fight left in him so I dont blame him for picking and choosing a last big name. Its not just the fighting but the training, early mornings, dieting etc which is harder to maintain the older you get. Kessler at this point in time is a tall order for him but not impossibility, however a few years earlier JC would have no worries! IMHO
