Will the U.S. Championships or National Golden Gloves be televised if not why?
Re: Televised USA bOXING
It has been reported that the National Golden Gloves semi-finals and finals will be televised on CN8 (Comcast Network) an affiliate of TVSN. The broadcast will be available on CN8 to Comcast Cable subscibers and available at http://www.CN8.tv via streaming video. Unfortunately, it is not being aired live, but rather taped and broadcast several weeks after the tournament is done. I guess it is better than nothing. I just would like it to be LIVE for the fans back home.ctill wrote:Will the U.S. Championships or National Golden Gloves be televised if not why?

nbc contract for olympic trials
NBC has a contract for the olympic trials, but likely is that they only show the finals in a program with teddy atlas to hype the olympic coverage. i met teddy on friday in dc and he's a great guy.
we need an internet library that will film all our bouts and put it on the internet streaming and archived for review. maybe this is inthe future.

tv contract
hi mel,
a local startup company, idbtv.net did our local jo tournament and put the fights on the internet:
http://ibroadcastsmedia4.tv/IDBTV-SPORTS.htm
They were looking into doing the trials too and nationals. I think they would be a great company for USA Boxing to hire to do all national competitions in the US. that way everyone can see the fights on good digital quality all over the country on the internet. they could database and archive all the fights.
Julie Goldsticker told me about NBC and then I also last week went to Friday Night Fights and met Teddy Atlas. He confirmed he would be doing commentary for the 2008 Olympic Boxing on NBC and commentary for the finals of the Olympic Trials. He is a nice man and I recently read his book. I have even more respect for him having read his life story. In his book, he does not have much good to say about Roger King in his dealings with Michael Moorer while training him. I am curious if he will touch on the A2P Dealings with Michael King and USA Boxing considering Michael and Roger King are brothers.

tv coverage
Just my opinion, but I think at this time we are at a crossroads to either bring our great sport back up where it belongs or watch it continue to dislove in the ocean of optional sports that are out there. I believe the biggest factor in the salvation of amateur comes in the form of media coverage. Give people a chance to follow the De La Hoyas of tomarrow, and you will, in turn, help create more educated and more loyal fans. Recently a very good thing happened to Amateur boxing, which resulted in a tremedous amount of news print media coverage. It was a very successfull venture that came with absolutly no cost to any part of the boxing community. I am very proud to have had a hand in this venture, because it has always been a goal of mine to help put this sport in a brighter spotlight. With the help of like minded people at the grass roots level we can do some good things to help but with USA Boxing on board at the top level, we could take this sport back to a time when the olympic boxing coverage equaled that of track or gymnastics. No matter who's falt is has been in to past, or where we think that responsibilty lies now, we all need to work together to save ourselves.......and soon. Just my opinion.
Re: tv coverage
Hal - tell us more about the venture that gave boxing on the east coast a boost in media coverage. Maybe the same thing could be done here in the Great Lakes region.squarering wrote:Just my opinion, but I think at this time we are at a crossroads to either bring our great sport back up where it belongs or watch it continue to dislove in the ocean of optional sports that are out there. Yes it would be better if it was on Network TV or at least a cable network that more people have such as ESPN. However, any TV is better than no TV which happened with last years National GG. Speaking of TV at least the National GG are usually televised whereas I rarely see any USA Boxing events televised. This is one area that USAB needs to improve upon. The organization has to do a better job of getting more media coverage especially television.boxmel wrote:Unfortunately, I don't get any of the stations carrying the bouts. It appears that only a very few will actually be able to see the boxing. Better than nothing but not good enough to bring up the interest of the average boxing fan.

Dennis and Mel, First I am like most of you and won't get any TV coverage back her in our home town where everyone wants to see it. If it can be done with the gloves, It can be done with the USA Championships. It just has to be handled by someone as passionate to get the job done as that persons counter part in the GG. As far as how we got so much media attention, Well a young sports reporter that covered my guys at the local and regioal level fell in love with Amateur boxing in the course of his coverage. An unresolvable dispute with management found him out the door and calling me to say that the story he was doing on my kid would not be printed because of it. As a young single guy with no ties to here, but his job, he didn't know what he was going to do or where to go. Even though my boxer was not on the team, I set him up to cover our GG regional team, including D. Wade and go to Chattanooga to cover other teams by writing stories for the hometown of boxers from all over the country. He was on his dime as far as travel, hotel food, ect. But Jim Beasly of the GG, being an old newpaper man saw the idea as a good one and let him in to cover. He sent stories back to Dallas, Portland, N.Y. New England. and all over, covering that towns local boxer. He also used his contacts to get more papers on board and is now on his way, driving to CO Springs to cover any boxer who's hometown News Paper will pay a small fee to write and E-Mail in. He is trilled with it's success and never dreamed his work would ever make so many big newspapers across the country. Plus he is making enough to continue doing it. Me? I'm just thrilled that we're finally getting some coverage. A Little long winded, but that's the whole story. I hope the powers to be, in USA Boxing see the value and help him in small ways like press pass and rosters ect.
I talked to Jonathon Howard and he did a story on my son for our local newspaper. They wrote articles the previous year, but did it over the phone. Having Jonathon at the show was nice. Hopefully, he can attend the US Championships and write articles about numerous boxers.squarering wrote:Dennis and Mel, First I am like most of you and won't get any TV coverage back her in our home town where everyone wants to see it. Johnathan Howard is my man and I have a feeling people will get to know him better and better as time goes on. Stange as this whole thing is that John is now covering boxers from all over the country, the misunderstanding between the bean counters of his hometown paper and the hometown boxer's paper has created a situation where they are about the only paper that won't be covered a hometown boy. Go figure that. I met with managment who all fell exactly as I do, but policy makers at corporate offices will make the final call, as our paper is part of the Gannett Group.
if true winning is to compete at your highest level, than true lossing is competing below you capable level.

ESPN Classic
I know ESPN Classic showed the 2005 Golden Gloves, wonder what their plans are for the future ? One would think the ratings would be higher then their average programming. Too bad Versus doesnt step up with their new interest in pro boxing.
Re: media
Our local paper, the Grand Rapids Press, is owned by Booth Newspapers. Gannett owns some TV stations around here though.squarering wrote:Johnathan Howard is my man and I have a feeling people will get to know him better and better as time goes on. Re: ESPN Classic
I watched the semi-finals and the finals of the National Golden Gloves on Sportsnet New York and the semis included one of the 201# bouts, but not the other. They omitted the bout between Deontay Wilder and Isiah Thomas. Then in the finals they omitted the 201# championship bout between Deontay Wilder and David Thompson. Did the editor have something against Wilder? I can't believe that they didn't show all the championship bouts.holeymoley99 wrote:I know ESPN Classic showed the 2005 Golden Gloves, wonder what their plans are for the future ?
