Brodie-Chi is a DRAW!

Chi-Brodie controversy!
By Craig Watt at ringside
UPDATE: The majority decision initially announced for Injin Chi has been changed to a majority draw and the title will remain vacant. Apparently it was determined that WBC President Jose Sulaiman made a error in adding up one of the cards. "It was an honest mistake and my mistake alone," said Sulaiman. "It was a terrific contest and there deserves to be a rematch."
----------
The result of the WBC featherweight title between Michael Brodie and Injin Chi was thrown into controversy in Manchester this evening when WBC President Jose Sulaiman declared 30 minutes after the decision was announced that the result was to be "withheld" following a discrepancy in the judges scorecards after a pulsating 12 round fight in which the Korean Injin Chi was initially declared the winner after a close majority decision of 114-112, 113-112 and a drawn score of 113-113. The fight saw over 1600 punches thrown and Korean Chi dropped Brodie in the second round with a right hand. The action was intense and the fight was one of the best seen in a UK ring in the last 5 years. Both fighters ended the bout covered in blood following what seemed an accidental clash of heads in the first round. After the final bell there was a 10 minute delay in the announcement of the scores and this surrounded a deduction from Brodie?s score in the first round following the clash of heads that appeared accidental. It transpired that referee Daniel Van de Wiele?s instructions to deduct a point from Brodie for this clash designated as Brodie's fault had not been actioned by the judges at the time and thus a deduction took place after the fight had ended. This stirred a huge amount of discussion and argument ringside and Sulaiman asked to personally check the scorecards before the result was announced. The result was then announced in favor of Injin Chin but further arguments took place at ringside. This resulted in the final decision that the result was to be "withheld" until a meeting had taken place between the camps, the WBC and British Boxing Board of Control. This is expected to take place in the next few hours so an official result can be declared for the vacant 126 pound WBC title. (More to follow)

Its sad tho' that the result has been changed...
Chi did deserve to win and IMO when a descision is made, it should stick...

Mind you Brodie did deserve some luck aswell, he was robbed against Jorrin and did deserve to get something tonight...

Yes, thanks for posting TT. Brodie got a break, the Koreans will cry foul, the WBC will want to perform better. Already a rematch looks a natural.
Brodie's skin heals very quickly so it could happen sooner than we think.

Agreed, Chi won for me - but as the judges saw it is a draw. Whether the point was deducted or not, it is still an absolute rediculous law that needs to be outlawed.

Brodie could have claimed that he didn't realise the point was docked and let his foot off the gas deliberately.

Wasn't the law something like deduct 1 point for an accidental headbutt if the fight takes place outside the US!

Once again the WBC make a pigs ear with their rule book that do need to be updated for the 21st century...

I feel sorry for Chi in a way now but for the avid fan or neutral, I think we can brave a rematch...

Questions regarding Brodie-Chi

1. Was there an actual error in how the judges scored the fight or was the Master Scoresheet simply added up wrong by Sulaiman?

2. Was the point deduction for the headbutt the result of the draw instead of the win for Chi?

3. Who were the judges for this fight?

4. What was/is the offical scorecards after the scoring correction?

I have it from several sources that the WBC headbutt rule can be overturned outside of the United States if both camps agree to it. The USA has overturned this rule.

Someone should contact the WBC explaining why this rule needs to be overturned! I see no good coming out of this rule!

Julio Cesar Chavez suffered a bloody head butt & with the help of a point deduction won a decision over Frankie Randall. :(

Sillymans premise on the rule was that though head but is accidental, the survivor that is not cut is deducted a point to make things even.

I thought Sillyman rescinded this stupid rule about a year ago in the Mexican media.

I hope there will be a flood of email to the WBC at [email protected]
& demand a photocopy of the cards is published. 8)
