Anybody been to the Randy Turpin pub in Llandudno?

Despite it being near my home area, I've only been once, and it was closed...

No, despite it being 5 miles from home. Have been meanign to go for over 5 years... Just forget / never have the time.

Is it deffo still there? On the orme or in happy valley?

On the Orme. It was closed, but that was a quiet weekday afternoon in off season, so it will probably be open during tourist times.

from memory Randy bought a castle down that way I seem to recall as a business venture but it nearly bled him dry..

That's where he's originally from but he settled in Llandudno after he retired from boxing and still has family there.

He trained at Gwrych Castle near Abergele, I don't think he bought one did he?

I've not been up there either, I don't think it's open and if it is it's not called that is it?

I went a few years back and bought some cracking b&w posters and then gave them away to my mate as i thought i'd get some more at some stage.

Unfortunately, every visit i've made since it's been shut. :(

could be getitng my wires crossed mate, thought he lost money on a dommed business venture, got it in my head he turned a castle into a hotel type thing.

From Wikipedia

During World War II, the Government used the castle to house 200 Jewish refugees.[2] Following the war, the castle left the Dundonald family and it was open to the public for twenty years. It was called The Showpiece of Wales and attracted many visitors.[3] It was also used as a training venue for the English World Middleweight boxing champion Randy Turpin in the early 1950s

yeah i know he ended up witout a pot to piss in poor bloke, went back to welding to scratch a living, tragic tale really, he couldnt handle the public spotlight.
I never forget the speech he had to deliver after beating Sugar Ray in a broad Leamington accent, poor bloke couldnt have looked more uncomfortable and humble if they had dressed him in rags.
