Careers Cut Short & Fighters Burnt Out

Post by HomicideHenry »

Note- This list does not include ring deaths or deaths or even injuries from the 'fall out' of fights with fighters in or near their primes, though honorable mentions are Gerald McClellan, Carmine Vingo, Bennie Kid Perret, and Luther McCarty.

Life-Style Choices:

Lew Jenkins- alcoholism
Pinklon Thomas- drugs
Tyrell Biggs- drugs
Michael Dokes- drugs
Aaron Pryor- drugs
Benny Lynch- alcoholism
Leon Spinks- drugs
Riddick Bowe- gluttony
James Buster Douglas- gluttony

Accidents:

Andrew Murray- car crash
Marcel Cerdan- air plane crash
Salvador Sanchez- car crash

Training and Dieting Choices:

Wilfred Benetiz- laxatives

Health and Disease:

Zeljko Mavrovic- muscular degeneration
Ike Ibeabuchi- mental illness
Pancho Villa- surgical complications
Tiger Flowers- surgical complications
Harry Greb- surgical complications
Mitch Green- mental illness*
Tommy Morrison- contracted HIV
Esteban DeJesus- contracted HIV
Harry Simon- mental illness (?)

Murders & Executions:

Stanley Ketchell- murdered
Oscar Bonavena- murdered
Cody Koch- murdered
Henry 'Snow' Flakes- executed

*Green could very well fit into the 'Lifestyle' category as well considering his life was full of drugs and alcohol problems.

I would also have added Jose Bonilla under 'health and disease' considering he died after an asthma attack in 2003, but I personally do not know if having asthma ever played a part in his career or affected it any at all.

Ibeabuchi and Harry Simon go in the 'bird' category surely?

There's been quite a few, Cody Koch for one.
Indeed, Stanley Ketchell and Oscar Bonavena spring to mind.

Should they not be a "Brutal Fights" section?

Fernando Vargas fits nicely into the above.

Add a jail section. Then again, that will take up half of Boxrec's bandwidth...

James"jesse james" Hughes-Murdered....... :(
This one really ticked me off back in 1995 cause, this son of a gun was one heck of a fun fighter to watch.Would've been an ideal opponent for either Gatti or Ward, cause he himself was exactly that type of fighter. There to fight and fight only.No holding or huggin with that Fella!

Zack Padilla-?????????? :x
What the heck DID happen with The Zack Attack?Remember the punch output that son of a gun used to put out?Would've made an absolutely incredible matchup with someone like Marco Antonio Barrera.

Ingemar Johansson probably could have gone on for a few more years had he not been so lazy with his training.

Cody Koch's death was tragic, but to be brutally honest his career wasen't going anywhere. Old fat and little 5-7 Roscoe T Word dropped him twice in the 1st round and then only lost because he was so out of shape he just punched himself out. Then Koch totally outboxed Ed Mahone for most of the first 10 rounds before going down for the count to Mahone's first significant punch of the fight.

Correction, Booker T Word. Just woke up and I must have been thinking about the sherriff on the Dukes of Hazzard.

During a sparring session with Shane Mosley, Padilla was hit with a hard punch which caused a brain injury. Padilla's boxing license was then suspended indefinitely, and he never fought again.
