Iron Hague.

Post by KOJOE90 »

Iron (William) Hague from what I know was a real smash'em & bash'em, big hitting, British Heavyweight and at one time was touted as a 'White Hope' in the Jack Johnson era.

He fought the great Sam Langford in the UK and although he lost, after a good try against the great Langford there was a lot of interest in taking Hague over to the USA in the hope that he cound land a big punch on Jack Johnson and win the Heavyweight Title.

However Hague (never the best of trainers) wasn't interested in going to the USA as he wanted to stay in the UK and party with his friends.

I heard he floored Langford during their fight, anyone else here this? If this true this is just as good an acheivement as Coopers knockdown of Ali, in my opinion.

Any thoughts fight fans? :box:

Shouldn't be too hard to find an account of the fight in your local English library's microfilm department.

Thats a great shot.
Ive noticed how in many of the older shots , fighters have their chins up a little high.
I guess it was part of the style/technique back then.

A recently published book on the White Hopes -good reading- gives quite a few details about Hauge.

Langford's manager bet their whole purse on a KO win and Sam had to work very hard because losing might have meant debtor's prison in London for Langford and Woodman.

If that's the one by Graeme Kent I agree it's a very good read.
