Arthur V Gomez

Post by Guest »

I'm looking forward to this and expect it to be an entertaining scrap while it lasts. Anyone see Gomez producing a superhuman effort to derail Arthur??

I've been very sceptical about Arthur but I couldn't fail to be impressed by the ease of his victory against Willie Limmond. I'd not seen Limmond before, but figured he'd be a class above the Steve Conway's and Carl Greaves of this world and that as a supposedly stylish boxer he would give Arthur a lot of problems. However, Alex just demolished him and never allowed Limmond to gain a foothold in the fight. Arthur deserves credit for that but just how much? Was it a case of him justifying the hype that's been centered on him or did we overestimate Willie Limmond's boxing ability and his ability to deliver on the big stage? Having thought about it I'm still not sure.

I think Michael Gomez is capable of providing us with some tangible evidence about Arthur's future prospects on Saturday night. Gomez is a known quantity and is tried and tested at domestic level. The only thing we don't know is just how much he has left? Apparently Gomez is in the shape of his life, but we've heard it all before. I think it's fair to say he is past his best and looks a faded force when compared to the fighter that demolished Gary Thornhill and who comfortably dealt with Dean Pithie.

In Gomez's favour though he does pack a punch. When you consider that both Greaves, Conway and Malinga were all able to catch Arthur cleanly in the early rounds Michael is not without hope. Arthur essentially walked through Greaves and Conway but Gomez might be a different proposition. I don't expect him to be overawed like Limmond was. If Arthur has a slack night defensively he'll struggle and might find himself on the floor for the first time.

But if Arthur is as good as some people think he is, his class should be too much for Gomez at this stage in his career. I expect Gomez to be dangerous in the opening 2 rounds but expect Arthur to take over and stop him between rounds 5 and 7. How does everyone else see it?

I would say that is about the perfect assessment of this fight and how it will go. Yes, Gomez will be a real threat early on, but his lack of recent fights and his long hard career will start to tell if Arthur gets through the early stages, which he should.

Just a quick thought: I've heard nothing but good things about Kevin Lear from those in the trade. Nathan Sting, for one, sparred Lear before the latter's stoppage win over Gomez and was praising him to the rooftops afterwards. There's always the chance that Gomez, far from being over the top when losing to the West Ham man as people suggested, just lost to an exceptional fighter on the fight.
If he has plenty left, he could shock the hittable Scot.

Gomez will fail to be a threat early on, as he will not last that long.

Gomez recent fights have given him no chance to prepare for a athlete like Arthur.

Arthur KO's Gomez in 3 rounds.

I see it about the same as Lightsoot & bennie ( and most of the trade I guess ) Arthur wins around half way.

Hard to pick against the Scot at this stage, but upsets happen anywhere and Gomez packs a knockout punch - I keep remembering that left hook(?) he laid out Thornhill with - Alex better not be too confident early on Sat night.

Maybe we're all underestimating Gomez here, he's still young and might not be as shot as everyone thinks he is. He should be really up for this one I think, and I think he might hurt Arthur early on.

But I'm a big fan of Arthur and think he might even go all the way.
So fa, his chin looks good, and Gomez tends to blow up a bit as the fights go on.

Arthur KO 7
