What happened to Bruce Curry?
What happened to Bruce Curry?
There's recently been an interesting thread on Donald Curry which has got me thinking about his older brother Bruce... like the Spinks brothers the elder one was at first percieved as the more talented fighter but ended up somewhat overshadowed by his younger and seemingly more together sibling. But who can forget Bruce Currys fights with Benitez and his amazing war with Monroe Brooks... surely one of the greatest toe-totoe fights I ve ever seen.... and his fights with Hayley were not half bad either... I remember being inspired by Bruce when he won the title when most people had given him up as shot.... then ofcourse came his defeat by Costello and it all turned sour... since then I ve heard nothing except that Bruce spent some time in hospital and had a one fight come-back... does anyone have any idea what Bruce is up to these days... how he is ....or does anyone remember meeting Bruce Curry during or after his career, or going to one of his fights?...... I d be interested to read anything on this great warrior... 8)

I posed the same question on this forum several weeks ago, Silkov. Sadly, I never get a response.silkov wrote:There's recently been an interesting thread on Donald Curry which has got me thinking about his older brother Bruce... like the Spinks brothers the elder one was at first percieved as the more talented fighter but ended up somewhat overshadowed by his younger and seemingly more together sibling. Curry-Reid
Yes, there is a nice piece about the Curry-Reid incident in "Boxing Babylon" by Nigel Collins. The whole book is a pretty good read.
Re: Curry-Reid
That book has the most on Bruce Curry after his fighting days. Jesse Reid said in the book he used to see Bruce at the odd boxing show and they would hug. There were no hard feelings (Bruce didn't really want to kill Reid, who had told Curry to quit; he just wanted to force him into taking him back as a fighter). Medication had controlled Bruce's mood swings by this time, but Jesse said Bruce would still talk about making a comeback. Curry was actually scheduled to fight Tony McKenzie in late 1986 in London, but the Board eventually turned him down, which was probably for the best. In his heyday, Cury was a hard fighter. Britain's Clinton McKenzie (no relation to Tony) fought a peak Curry in 1979 and says Curry hit him with a left hook to the body that nearly cut him in half.Rafael wrote:Yes, there is a nice piece about the Curry-Reid incident in "Boxing Babylon" by Nigel Collins. Looking at Bruce when he fought Benitez he looks to have been easily an equal talent to brother Don... he had speed and power and a great box-fighting style ...but I think he was pushed too far too early (fought Benitez in just his 15th fight I believe) and he was perhaps never quite the same fighter after his toe to toe war with Monroe Brooks.
Bruce Curry had to be one of the worst managed fighters. I read that for his succesful defense of the jr welter belt against Hidekazu Akai, the japanese promoter had to pay Don King $250,000 to bring the fight to Tokio, yet Bruce purse was only $10,000.
Also, if you look at his record, he had fought in Japan only nine days prior to his rematch with Benitez. During the first 4 months of 1978, he Koed a fighter by the name of Minoru Sugiya, dropped a majority decision to Benitez in the rematch nine days later, One month after that he Koed Luis Resto in Vegas and just three weeks after that he engaged in that war with Monroe Brooks at Madison Sq. Garden.

Yeah its scary stuff!... almost as if his management was trying to fornicate him up!... I heard a while back that he's in a bad way these days and is cared for by his family... so sadly he maybe in a simular predicament to Benitez...Broncano wrote:Bruce Curry had to be one of the worst managed fighters. And what did Madison Square Garden's referee do when Benitez was down twice already in one round against Curry?
The fact that they had him fight in Japan AND THEN FLY BACK FROM JAPAN and fight Benitez nine days later shows that Curry's "managers" were stooges working for the overall set up---not for their own fighter.
What about the decision in the first Curry-Benitez fight where
Curry knocked Benitez down THREE times?
They called it a split decision FOR BENITEZ.
LOL
In the second fight stooge referee Tony Perez voted 9-1 for designated winner Benitez,
while judge Al Reid scored it 5-5 in rounds.
Bruce Curry was not a member of the club.
The most he could hope for, in his postion of looking in from the outside, was a few paydays when he was useful for the overall operation of those who controlled things.
