The man wins an award. The sport gets great publicity, with judging done by experts from the broadcast and newspaper industries. And some of those here, who profess to love the sport, slag him off. Yep, I wouldnt argue with that, the media chose who in their opinion best deserved the award so he cant be that bad can he - Duke is the problem, a poor choice for the ITV team as is Nicky Piper over on Sky - Glen and Johnny are worth listening to though - I understand your point about slagging people off, its often cruel and unwarranted - True professionals in any field wouldnt be doing what they do unless they are good enough so they do deserve some respect from us - The ex boxers are not media men, but some adapt very well while others dont - Ricky Hatton if he still wants involvement in boxing after retiring would make a first class co commentator - He has personality, wit and a way with the media and of course great knowledge of the sport.The Blade wrote:The man wins an award. Nicky is alright, problem a bit though is with two guys around his size who achieved far greater things... sometimes it can be "well you were just a commonwealth champion".
Nicky's best role is possibly as a co-commentator (ala Duke McKenzie on ITV), he doesn't do it often but when he has he's been good. His commentary on Barrera vs Jones 1 when Sky showed it on delay was excellent. It was alongside David Bremmer.
Yes, Hatton would be good as would (I think) Carl Froch.

Ricky started out with ITV before he left Warren. If he had two years of commentating behind him on high profile events, he would have been a fixture by now and enjoying the McGuigan factor of household recognition - and not just with us boxing nuts. Maybe his time will still come

Listen, plancton bonce. The point is that this is an award made by the movers and shakers of the tv business. Irrespective of what you might think of the merits of their deicision, it is great for the profile of boxing that a boxing commentator gets recognition of this sort. Actually, if you investigate Blades posts, besides writing in that empty, automaton style that John Rawling speaks in, he also gets very touchy if anyone criticises ITV, Rawling, Barry McGuigan, and refers to us who dare criticse as "sad" or "mad".The Blade wrote:

I actually don't mind Rawling that much, after all he does have a balancing act to perform, he doesn't want to lose his job so he has to bite his lip when he sees shit consistently served up in front of him. I mean after Macarinelli-Gunn he was dying to just burst out and tell us what what we all knew, this was a mismatch of epic proportions and the ending had little to do with Macarinelli's immense power as it had to do with the fact Gunn was one of the worst "world title" challengers we had ever seen on British soil.
As for his sidekick Duke McKenzie i liked him when he first broke onto the scene as a fresh face on SKY, he was astute and knowledgable, sort of how Johnny Nelson is now. But after going to the beeb and onto ITV he has degenerated into a sad parody, laughable to most genuine boxing fans. A strange Boxing oddity, complete with an excitable, boyish charm and unassuming comedic style...hmm im starting to sound like an emily bronte novel i'll stop there.
