Hatton taunts Mayweather

Post by Rocky Balboa »

Ricky Hatton would love to finish his glittering career with a victory against P4P king Floyd Mayweather Jr and says he's had "tougher dinners" than the 'Pretty Boy'.

'The Hitman' is aiming to thrust himself right into contention for a superfight with Mayweather by winning his Las Vegas bout with Jose Luis Castillo on June 23, but accepts time is running out to secure such a dream finale.

As one of Britain's most celebrated boxing heroes in recent times, Hatton (42-0, 30KOs) has very few targets left to hit before he calls it a day inside the ring and has no doubts how he'd want to bow out.

"To do Madison Square Garden at the top of the bill and hopefully get Mayweather because he's the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world," he said. "These are big possibilities should I beat Castillo.

"I've achieved the majority of my goals already. Being the best in the world was one thing along with winning six world titles in two weights and topping the bill in Las Vegas.

"But I think if I could be the best pound-for-pound fighter on the planet in any weight division I could definitely put my slippers on and put my feet up."

Hatton's triumphs over Kostya Tszyu, Carlos Maussa, Luis Collazo and Juan Urango since 2005 have put him well and truly in the global big time and earlier this year Sugar Ray Leonard claimed he has what it takes to shock the 'Pretty Boy'.

The 28-year-old from Hyde agrees and thinks Mayweather's recent WBC light-middleweight clash with Oscar De La Hoya has given him more grounds to be optimistic.

"I'd like to think so," he added. "I don't think everybody would share the same opinion but if I look at the Mayweather/De La Hoya fight, when De La Hoya put the pressure on, Mayweather shut up shop and he didn't really want to know.

"By the midway stage I thought, 'Floyd, you're going to have to pull your finger out here' but it's only when De La Hoya tired when it changed. Whether that's to do with his age, the number of hard fights or because his enthusiasm isn't there, but I think Mayweather only won it by one round in the end.

"So imagine someone like me who can go to start to finish, I wouldn't have let him back in the fight. So as good and talented as Mayweather is, it's not beyond me and I think I would beat him and only time will tell if I get my chance."

It has been mooted that the only way to bring Mayweather over to England for a possible fight would be to hold a glamour bill at the new Wembley Stadium, but the 28-year-old from Hyde doesn't even think that would be enough.

He said: "I don't think Mayweather would come over here, not even at Wembley, he'll want to stay in America. Although he said initially he'd like to come over here and fight me because a few years ago nobody really rated me and then I beat who I did and I think he changed his mind then."

Hatton is also doubtful if Mayweather can ever be called a true great when you consider the timing he's chosen to face some of his previous victims.

The American has defeated the likes of Arturo Gatti, Carlos Baldomir, Diego Corrales and Zab Judah as well as De La Hoya in May, but none of these have impressed Hatton too much.

He said: "Gatti was a little bit past it, Diego Corrales was a super-featherweight who looked a bit weight-drained, Carlos Baldomir was 'win some lose some', Zab Judah had seen better days and as fantastic as a result it was, even De La Hoya had seen better days than that."

Hatton has also mocked Mayweather's toughness amid pipedream talk of an almost fantasy bout between the pair in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

He joked: "There's as much chance of Manchester City winning the European Cup as Mayweather fighting in the UFC! You can't even get him to fight in the boxing ring.

"Floyd is safe enough in the boxing ring where he can jab and move and run and keep out the way. He's a wonderful talent but as far as mixing it up as a tough guy goes, I've had tougher dinners."

Having said that Hatton says he wouldn't be tempted to try it either, but admits it makes great viewing.

He added: "I'm a big fan of the UFC but not when they start grappling and wrestling and rolling around on the floor for three minutes at a time. But when they're stood toe to toe and having a go at it I think you'd be hard pushed to find anything as exciting really.

"But you won't get Floyd Mayweather to stand still long enough."

Hatton should be concentrating on Castillo, instead of worrying about Mayweather.

I still don't hold out much hope of Mayweather vs Hatton ever happening. Floyd has just received a $20M+ purse for the De La Hoya. I can't see even being tempted back into the ring for a substantial amount less than that.

Strangely the fact Mayweather beat Castillo twice isn't mentioned.

Not least that he beat him twice & that it was five years ago, arguably when Castillo was a better figther than he is now. He hadn't been in an epic war with Corrales at that stage of his career.

Hatton won't face Witter so how's he gonna fight Mayweather, apart from grabbing the money by turning up?

you can make a case that castillo beat mayweather 1st time out. i don't give a fvck about floyd's tame little counters. he was outworked. in the 2nd fight castillo had an ankle injury yet he still was able to cut the ring off, make floyd uncomfortable though jlc couldn't nail him with anything big and let his prey slip over the final 1/3.

hatton won't like castillo's solid punches. in terms of power there's no comparison between the two. castillo may chop ricky up.

Hatton did not fight Witter because a certain promoter did not have the bollocks to put the fight on. It was in the days when he got away with putting on whatever he wanted.

I dont think Ricky remembers how tired and inactive he was in the latter parts of his past 2 bouts.

Had Castillo winning the First fight 116-113 and Mayweather winning the Second 115-114..one thing has been proved, its that Mayweather hates come forward quality fighters..

Hatton wouldnt stop punching, im convinced he could beat Mayweather...

Mayweather did fight the first fight with one hand for most of it.

Sorry PR, cannot understand your card.

Castillo dominated from the word go, maybe due to the hand but Mayweather didnt want to be there..Mayweather landed pitter-patter shots but the true quality of work came from Castillo..the 2nd fight proved the first was no fluke but Mayweather came on strong at the end

Didn't this certain promoter put Witter Into Hatton's contract though?

Hatton can be contradicting at times and can be when It comes to the Witter subject. Witter won a title and he still says no for example.

Still though hope he beats Castillo but since Floyd beat DLH It seems a Hatton/Mayweather fight Is now dead.

Didn't want Gatti, Corrales and Baldomir all after Floyd had beaten them? He does this every time after Mayweather wins, saying how he is the man to beat him. Floyd v Oscar was a million miles away from hatton v urango

I started boxing, after Hatton turned pro. After three fights, I could tell he was going to be a champion some day, and a big star. I Always liked his style of fighting, so much so that i incorporated a lot of it into my early amateur career (body shots, and lateral shifting of the feet). Since he has moved up into world class, i feel his work has become messy, his body shots less effective and seems to be now winning fights on brute strength and stamina. We saw this in each of his last four fights (especially Kostya, though thats's to be expected, and he did a great job). I do like Hatton but he does seem to be calling out fighters like Mayweather ODLH, and Cotto, and has been for a long time and then fighting fighters like; Maussa, Urango and Collazo. These are all fighters who had world titles, but were also fighters that were not house hold names, and ones that he knew he could outstrength around the ring. As we saw with Collazo he couldn't do that and he immediately stepped back down in weight. My point is that you can not go around telling people that Witter is not a house hold name that doesn't sell tickets then fight the likes of these fighters that nobody knows. Regardless if Witter sells tickets when he fights or not. Everyone in Britain knows that that is a massive fight and will sellout a football stadium, also the fact that Hatton is well known in America will generate interest over there. there is a lot of excuses from the Hatton fans and hatton himself as to why this fight should not take place, and this is obviously because they know that witter has a good chance of winning (though i favour hatton). I believe Hattons time is running out fast, and would not be able to live with mayweather. Though definitely has the heart to give it a good go.

By the way mayweather won both fights with JLC IMO and the fact remains that it is and will always be 2-0 FM in that dual.

I like this post.

An emotionally charged view on a talent from grass roots to the disappointment of its fruition as a real boxing superstar. I too have seen talents that I thought would go to the top (and none ever did). The truth is Hatton is/was a tremendous talent who has learned easier ways to win his paydays (and all credit to him for that). Sometimes the style that takes you to the top is not always suited to keeping you there.

All the griping on boxrec seems to aim itself at talented British fighters that don’t achieve the P4P status of people like PBF (exceptionally gifted athlete who sticks to a gameplan) or reckless quick footed fast handed powerful punchers like Pacman.

When has the British Isles ever produced a fighter of the stature of PBF or Pacman in the past? I’ll give you the answer: Never. Just appreciate what you have (Calzhaghe included) and stop the griping about them. Because in 5 to 10 years from now you will still be moaning about the lack of them or watching UFC ( or whatever it as morphed into by then) instead.

Hatton faced his WaterTszyu (sorry) and there should be no begrudging respect to him for that. Whatever he does from here on in will be taken in its proper boxing perspective.

BTW I think a Hatton-Witter confrontation would capture a lot attention. And I too think that PBF was 2-0 against JLC

What a load of tosh. Ken Buchanan! WTF!

I don't think there are any fighters who are leagues ahead of mayweather or Pacquaio. Both men would have been competitive in any era they fought in.
