Fight Academy's new signing.
Fight Academy's new signing.
Recent Fight Academy capture, Victor Oganov fights former world title challenger Antwun Echols for the IBO Super Middleweight Title on the Hatton vs Castillo bill.
Oganov is 30 and has only had 26 fights in a 9 year career. However, he is undefeated in these 26 with 26 stoppages.
Anyone seen him in action? If he moves to the UK how will he fair vs our current crop of Super Middles.
What about Oganov vs Woods in the reletively near future? Of course that is assuming he gets past Echols.

I am sure i rwead somewhere he can punch but is a big over reliant on power and one dimensional. Either way one thing seems certain that with him and Echols in the opposite corners it will end in a KO!
Seems the Hatton-Castillo fight night is going IBO crazy, Ed Levine will be raking in the big show sanctioning fees.

its a very padded record, look at the fighters who are unbeaten who he has faced, they have a total of about 5 fights combined !!
his last 2 opponents have had 14 losses each. what a load of bollocks. its the sort of record femi fehintola was starting to accumulate till he met johannesen.
this bollocks makes my blood boil, im aware that an unbeaten fighter could have any ceiling imaginable, but jesus, put him in some competetive fights FFS.

Oganov v Moller
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQ8kMXqK ... ed&search=
He Looks strong and powerful, but walks straight in, and has hardly any head movement, he also seems to have short arms, so has to always be close in to let his shots go. If Echols has 80% of his ability left he will win, Someone like Woods would beat him easily at the moment

My friend who knows practically all the Russian amateur boys from the late 90s had never heard of him.... so he was probably regional rather than national level.... However regional level in russia is probably quite goodOld bones Ian wrote:As for his amatuer record i've seen it as 64-16 with all 64 wins as KO's, which must be bull, or he just fought at a low level
He turned over very young as well for a russian which suggests he didnt have great success unpaid.

Well i've seen the video of the Grant fight, as the link is above.Scooby Doo wrote:Nobody has stated anything about this signing yet other than Fight Academy have signed him, it seems there are people who unnecessarily rubbishing the guy without seeing him box, lets see what he can do then make a judgement or base an opinion then.
And given an honest opinion of him, i've nothing against the guy, just think he's a big puncher , who needs to work on his upperbody movement alot, his head was very stationary against Grant, and instead of bobbing moving in he walk in a straight line, also when getting hit, he stepped back in a straight line. Instead of dipping or stepping half a foot to the side to avoid the blows.
He's 30 years old now, and been a pro for 8 1/2 years, so will he improve much more?
Echols is a good choice of opponent, who's fought at the top level, If Oganov doesn't take Echols out early (which has only happened once on his debut in 1993), then i will be impressed. If Echols is there after 5-6 rounds then i think he wins.

Interesting development, i do hope that Fight Acadamy didn't pay Oganov a cash advance to sign!!

Shaw inks Oganov!
Promoter Gary Shaw announced today the signing of undefeated Top-10 super middleweight contender Victor Oganov to an exclusive promotional contract. Oganov (26-0, 26 KOs), a native of Russia, now living in Australia, is currently rated #8 by the WBO. At 5'9 with a 59-inch reach, Oganov is already proving to be a most formidable opponent in a very hot division. "As they say, 'to the victor go the spoils,' and with his power Victor will be collecting a lot of spoils in U.S. rings," said Shaw. "In Victor's U.S. debut in January, he knocked out Richard Grant in the second. Jeff Lacy in his prime went the distance against Grant, so that tells you something. He's fought in a lot of different countries. Nothing distracts him. He is focused on one thing...destroying his opponent. I think the fans are going to love watching him." Oganov, 30, has fought in seven different countries since turning pro in 1998, including Russia, Estonia, England, Chile, Ukraine, Australia, and the United States. He is managed by Edward Goumachian.

Either they have that reach measurement wrong or the russian is built along similar lines to a T-Rex!Old bones Ian wrote:At 5'9 with a 59-inch reach, Oganov is already proving to be a most formidable opponent in a very hot division.
Surely 69 inch would be nearer the mark?
This seemingly premature announcement of Oganov's signing by FA is reminiscent of FW lauding the capture of Povetkin's signature, only for the Russian standout to end up going with the Germans!
Oganov looks to continue a remarkable run against veteran Echols. The Russian they call "The Destroyer" has won ALL his fights - amateur and pro - by the short route.Coco wrote:How good do you think he is then?bennie wrote:Oganov has won EVERY fight - amateur and pro - by stoppage.
He's 26-0 as a pro.
Trained by Jeff Fenech out of Australia, Oganov is raw, untested but obviously dangerous. Last time out in January in California, he bombed out Brooklyn's experienced Richard Grant in just two rounds. Grant, you will remember, was once horrendously sucker-punched by a gloveless James Butler after their contest (suffering a broken jaw; Butler is now serving life imprisonment for murder).
Oganov also holds a second-round stoppage of New Zealander Sam Leuii, who came close to stopping Clinton Woods here many years ago, the current IBF light-heavyweight champ.
And Oganov dismantled Donaster southpaw Michael Alexander in five rounds in Coventry in 2001 (his only appearance here). Alexander held a win over Stockwell star Richard Williams.
Otherwise, the Russian's victims are relatively unknown but you would expect that with a man who must be a nightmare to match. Now 30, he's averaged less than three fights a year since turning pro back in 1998, relocating to Sydney in 2003 and continuing to smash super-middleweight after super-middleweight, when he gets one. He's pretty close to smashing the record 44 straight knockouts held by Utah heavyweight Lamar Clark.
Clark went in with someone called Cassius Clay (was hammered).
Oganov also seriously steps up against Echols, who has challenged for major world titles at middle and super-middleweight and is no slouch in the punching stakes himself: he's taken out 27 in a record of 31-6-3. He survived THREE knockdowns to bury Charles "The Hatchet" Brewer in three rounds in Connecticut in 2001. He survived one of the dirtiest world title fights ever with Philly great Bernard Hopkins. He survived a drive-by shooting in his home city of Davenport in 2003 (hit in the right armpit).
It's fair to say Echols won't be overawed by the Russian's reputation.
A pro since 1993, Echols challenged Hopkins for the IBF middleweight title in Miami in 1999 and pushed "The Executioner" all the way to a decision. The rematch a year later in Las Vegas (Venetian Hotel) descended into that foulfest, which suited hardbitten Hopkins, who emerged on a 10-round stoppage.
But he hailed Antwun "a worthy, dangerous opponent."
Echols moved up to super-middleweight and licked men of the calibre of Kabary Salem, Brewer and respective opponent Grant (three rounds). He also held future WBC king Eric Lucas to a 10-round draw in Canada and was linked to WBO champ Joe Calzaghe for a while. In the end he took on Anthony "The Man" Mundine for the vacant WBA super-middleweight title in Sydney (Oganov's adopted home city). He gave it a good go before dropping the unanimous points in September 2003.
Since then, 35-year-old Echols has fought only five times and was stopped in 10 by Toronto’s useful Kingsley Ikeke in 2005 and held to a draw in his last two outings - he looks jaded.
Don't get me wrong, Echols will be tough when he's 60. The last thing they lose is their punch. But one expects the younger, fresher, unbeaten Oganov to come through.

But why has Oganov been held back for so long? he's been a pro for over 8 years, compare him to other big hitters like Nigel Benn or Julian Jackson , and these guys after 8 years were winning world championships.
Also is this fight with Echols going to happen? If he's signed with a rival promoter i think not

Obviously he seems to be a puncher, but if u take the example of Alexander(ko5) he has also been stopped a number of times and quicker to, by fighters who aren't top domestic class.
They are hardly moving him along quickly, even Echols who has good pedigree, is veryshopworn, they are not taking risks.
Is the Russian a bit of a sideshow, or is he a genuine contender, or is it still a mystery?
