Well, also, they cannot afford to get stopped, as they will get put on suspension if they are knocked out, so they come in to primarily protect themselves, but if they can sneak a win, they sometimes do.

They also aren't going to get many call ups if they start upending the prospects they are being hired to extend.

I wonder how well those guys earn, given that they fight every few weeks, often at short notice, they probably make quite a nice living as promoters always need to find a fighter who is going to make their prospect look good whilst also getting another win in the column.

Wonder what someone like buckley gets for a night's work on average?

we can all wax lyrical about how great journeymen are but i think they are the main reason people just turn up for the fight they want to see these days.

who wants to sit through 60-54 all night?

maybe not great, but the sport would be on its arse without those sorts of people

i agree they should be used to an extent but they are massively overused at the moment. that isnt sport is it?

I think its a symptom of the wider malaise tbh - there is money at the top but not at the bottom, so why run the risk of losing untill you get to the money...? hence the use of more veteran fighters...

And as I say, Booth KO'd a fighter the other week, so its not as if it is totally unsporting...

Boxing isn't like Tennis. Going up against Federer as a debutant pro isn't going to do wonders for your confidence, but you aren't going to get your head smashed in.

In boxing, you need learning fights for upcoming fighters, otherwise they can get badly hurt, and a loss in boxing is a much bigger deal than in almost any other sport I can think of.

maybe so, but when you are regularly watching the sport, the sight of ram singh or arv mittoo coming to the ring is enough to make you want to go to the bar.

it isnt entertainment and it isnt sport. 60-54 kid sells a few tickets and does a few rounds while all the neutrals go home and watch UFC on the box.
