It seems reasonable that that would guarantee them a place at the US Championships, but it is completely obvious that that title is nowhere near as difficult to win as the PAL or GGs. Every single winner, except for Chris Downs, was beaten this morning. By selectively seeding them, they are making it harder for some of the best boxers to make it to the Trials.

Dennis pointed out that some of the Trials boxers were going to be weaker than some of those left home. Case in point, Nicholas Swan of Great Falls, MT - who benefitted from Bear Richardson not making weight and beat a fighter from Seattle. Today he was pounded by Cymone Kearney, and he's so low profile I couldn't find a single article about him in his hometown paper, which is hardly the New York Times. I wish him luck and congratulate him on his success, but he looks to be in for a double pounding at the Trials.

And Charles Hatley is beating people with extreme prejudice - will this be the tourney that he breaks through? 152 is looking very solid to me.

[/i]

I'd like to respond to your point about Nick Swan. Nick is NOT a Light Heavyweight. Today he only weighed about 167 pounds. He's 5'11. And this is his first year boxing again in 2 years. He's quick and has good reflexes, but has a bad habit of dropping his left hand when he moves-as I said, he's slick and has good reflexes, and so can get away with that. He wasn't originally our regional representative at 178, he was runner up, but the guy who beat him dropped to 165 and was representing the USAF I believe. As for not finding an article about him-Nick only moved back to Great Falls from Los Angeles in about Feburary I would guess and started boxing again, like I mentioned. During those 2 years he was in LA he wasn't boxing because he couldn't afford it. Another issue is that boxing isn't a huge sport here in Montana (hence the reason USA Boxing treats boxers from MT with utter disrespect). If you want the best boxer from MT at the moment, it's Junior Caferro, who's fighting Hylon Williams tonight. He's beaten Hylon before 2 years ago, and Junior is apparently very sharp right now, he's motivated because aside from the PAL in October of 06 he's had a bad run of luck in tournaments the past year. I won't be surprised to see him in the semi finals, and because of the brackets he's gotten and the results of other matches, even see him in the finals. His big trouble is Rico Ramos, and Rico is in a completely seperate bracket from him.

I'm not sure if anyone has heard either, but the DQ result in Vincent Montoya's fight has been overturned (112lbs) and he'll be fighting again.
I was trying not to sound like I was slagging on Swan. I probably should have just left it alone - but it seemed like he was the most notable case of a guy getting through to the Trials with a good draw - but I have plenty of respect for what he does. And it sounds like that it is true that he will be overmatched at the Trials, based on what you said. But good for Montana to get two boxers to the Trials - Caferro gave Hylon a close battle tonight.

So I guess that Escalante really did beat Montoya again tonight? They had to fight again and the fight with Warren has been pushed back? Strange events, but at least it means that Warren hadn't been beaten tonight, so I can be less surprised.

Emile - the above posts indicate that Montoya's DQ was overturned and they boxed again. That means Raushee won't box his 1/4 final bout until tomorrow and they will have to have 1 bout on Thursday. I was looking for Raushee's name and didn't see it on the bout sheet. Now I know why.

Rico was dominating his opponent. He dropped Rosey Sommerville hard at the beginning of the 2nd round. Sommerville fell face first and was not going to get up in time. Rico now faces one of the surprises of the tournament - Shemuel Pagan.

The computers are another story - they are all old and breaking down. Yeah, I'm seeing the number of bouts that are going to paper scoring. I did my best last year to drum up interest by the powers that be so they would get a decent system before the qualifiers. No such luck. It would be really nice if they started putting the athletes first, wouldn't it! The Brazilian system is inexpensive, user-friendly, and good. We could have had this all in place last year.

I honestly have no clue why the numbero of points means so much! A win is a win no matter what.
Mel - what is the difference between what USAB has and the Brazilian system? Please elaborate.

Today's bout sheet shows Warren vs. Escalante; when I advance my brackets, I show it should be Warren vs. Ibarra. And if Montoya's DQ is overturned, does that mean he beat Escalante? The 119 bracket doesn't make sense.

Said Dennis,

USAB's scoring system has not been upgraded in years. We are now doing the first tie breaker off the accepted score and since the system doesn't automatically calculate it, we have to do it manually (room for error by tech). It still runs on Windows 98 with Access 97. It won't work right on Windows XP. The lap tops are 6 or 7 years old and the keys are beginning to stick, i.e., the keys we push for KOs don't work on one; the space bar (which starts and stops the bouts) sticks on another; the End of Bout reports on one do not always print all the rounds scores, blah, blah, blah. It would cost another $80 to $90 thousand to redo and/or upgrade. The Brazilian system is up to date and very user friendly and reasonably priced.

Warren did not compete in the quarter-finals yesterday because the Escalante versus Montoya preliminary round bout had to be contested before Warren could box the winner. Therefore Warren's bout today against Escalante will be a quarter-final bout while the Alafa v. Franklin bout will be a semi-final bout (as will all other men's bouts). Timothy Ibarra will get a rest day today. Warren vs. Ibarra will probably be competed tomorrow so that the 112# final can be contested Friday along with all the other weight classes.

There is something I don't understand with today's bout sheets. Why is Troy Wohosky listed in the semi-finals when he lost to Raynell Williams yesterday in the quarter-finals.

Hey Dennis - what do you think of Lenroy Thompson. His past results haven't been amazing, but he seems to be improving rapidly, and I read he was only 18, which is pretty impressive for a super-heavy. Does this kid have a good future - maybe a 2012 USOC hopeful if Michael Hunter goes pro?

Winners of the Championships get to be gold medalists. There is no seeding in the Trials. Our Olympic team will be the participants at the Worlds.
Qa'id Muhammad said he pretty much quit on his fight because there was no point risking injury with the Trials so close. It's hard to fault him I guess (apparently he has some minor leg ailment), but it kind of shows that this tournament isn't very rewarding in an Olympic cycle. Once you've made the Trials, the rest is just a medal to hang in your case.

Hopefully, since A2P is no longer involved, we never do the qualifying a year ahead and/or the way we did this year. It needs to go back to the old system of determining the 8 into the Trials: PAL, gold & silver medalist from the US Championships, Armed Forces, Golden Gloves, Eastern & Western Trials and At Large.

Wonder why the 112 bracket didn't box earlier this week - someone messed up.

He wears Puma sneakers in the ring. The fact sheet had said that flat soled boxing shoes were required, but he wears plain 'ole jogging shoes. I guess that is fitting as it looks like he is in a track meet. He runs a lot. He switches from orthodox to southpaw constantly and is very akward. He tried to move down to 201 and qualify, but could not win the Eastern Trials. My understanding is that he is barely a super-heavy, around 204 or so. I don't know about his potential as I think he will have trouble with quite a few 201# boxers who are quick enough to catch him and some of the 201# boxers who are too strong for him. It seemed like Mike Hunter hurt his several times. Hunter is only 18 or 19.

Supposedly Willett is having shoulder problems again. He was also tagged quite a bit in the 4th round in his bout with Anthony Tettis. Tettis knocked him down and gave him at least the one 8 count (might have been 2 8 counts - I can't remember). Tettis landed a lot of punches in the 4th round and yet only received 12 points for the whole bout. I thought he scored at least that many in the last round alone. Many in the crowd thought Tettis won as there were many boos.
Andrade said that he was sick.
I don't know what Gary Russell, Jr's problem was today.
Yes, I think the boxers are saving themselves.
Porter has been very strong. He beat Jacobs decisively. He hurt Danny repeatedly. He was also too strong for Shawn Estrada. Estrada was cautioned twice for holding, twice for wrestling, twice for pushing and then finally in the 4th round he was WARNED for holding. I didn't see the bout as close as the final score. Estrada actually boxed fairly well as the holding made it difficult for Porter to land punches.

David Clark v. Sammy DiPace. They both threw hard shots in the first round with David having the better of it in the round. I believe he would have had a lead of a few points. They both got hit by some hard shots in the first round. In the 2nd round, they both went out and went all out and David landed a perfect right hand and Sammy went down hard. He got up after 3 or 4 wobbled on shake legs, but was able to stand with his hands up and show the ref that he was ready to go. I didn't think he was ready. His legs looked shaky. David charged at him and threw a few punches that just grazed Sammy and Sammy went back down and the ref stopped it. It was a good stoppage. Sammy is young and good. He will be back in the future.

Rau'shee just completely dominated Escalante. I couldn't believe that it didn't end by the 2nd round on the 20 point rule. There were several 8 counts against Bruno in the 3rd and his coach, Al Mitchell, did the right thing and told the ref to stop it.

Raynell Williams got a rematch with Hylon Williams. Hylon won a close bout in the National GG finals and this time Raynell Williams won a close bout over Hylon. They will probably meet again at the Trials Box-offs.

The Rico Ramos v. Shemuel Pagan bout was the least exciting bout of the semi-finals (quarter-final too - Warren's bout). It was boring and both boxers got warned several times to start throwing punches. Ramos then got an additional warning to stop running and start boxing. The final score may be close to the total punch count! I guess all the good bouts they had made both of them too cautious in this bout.

The Zimmerman v. Guzman bout was not stopped due to the 20 point rule. Zimmerman landed some good shots in the 1st round and Guzman's legs buckled. The ref had the doctor check Guzman's knee prior to the start of the 2nd round. Guzman was wearing a brace on his knee. He did squats and other things asked of him by the doctor and the bout proceeded. About 30 seconds later he was hit by a hard straight left by Zimmerman and his knee buckled and sort of gave out. The ref stopped it right then.

Mel - the computers were acting up again. Many bouts were delayed for a couple of minutes waiting for the computer tech to tell the ref that the system was ready. At least the systems never failed today.

Dennis - thanks for all the reports. Looks like Estrada reverted to his normal getting-warnings-style.

The delay in starting the bouts could be a tech problem - not necessarily a computer problem. I'll have to wait and see what the After Action reports say.

It's really embarrasing when a referee has to tell an "elite" boxer to box. I'm sorry, but I'm not real impressed with Rico.
