I agree, the system needs a total overhaul. The only way to stem the swelling numbers of bodies is to wheel out, and enforce (globally) a much more stringent version of the Ali Act. ie. ratings explanations to extend beyond "Shannon Briggs moves up 49 due to...activity." "Gary Lockett moves up...erm...because we took some Thai fellow out the rankings." And the application of mandatories and defences must be unambiguous. And any sanctioning body not fulfilling these terms be either banned from operating under signatory members, or not be allowed to use the term "world champion" in any means or form in relation to their champion.

This won't happen though, because the current climate suits everyone except the fans, who of course don't matter at all.

Well that kills off any cred the IBO or boxrec ratings might of had.

John Ruiz at 5 and 9 respectively. This guy hasn't "won" a fight since Andrew Golota in 2004...

... he "lost" these close decisions in Germany - abroad - against tough opposition.

Few other top boxers have risked and achieved this.

He easily would have defeated these other TOP30 guys in his hometown.

He still is TOP10.

You would have officially sanctioned events run by the body all year round. The fighter fights when he likes but can but obviously if you only fight once a year then you won't progress as fast as someone fighting 4 times a year.

Just look at the UFC, the best fight the best and it has a much better structure than boxing. Boxing is outdated. The promoter run business was good back in the day but now they need to refresh and start over.

UFC is totally promoter driven also though. UFC in fact is a one man sanctioning body AND promoter, which is obviously going to be very much open to abuse. Dana White is the chief cook and bottle washer.

Right now, UFC is trying to embarrass and denigrate boxing, in order to elevate their own standing, but it's early days yet, and it will be interesting to see whether the best are still fighting the best in 5 years time.

In fact, its clear that in many respects the sport itself is becoming more and more like boxing, with the emphasis on stand up increasing significantly, the introduction of weight classes, the banning of various moves designed to incapacitate an opponent etc.

UFC has changed a great deal since it's earliest 'no holds barred' inception, and the playing field in respect of payment of fighters and purses will also change. Pretty soon we will find fighters not wanting to fight one another to protect their records and guarantee their earnings.

Lest we forget, boxing's origins lie in a mixed martial arts history, with grabbling, throws, choke holds, and arm bars all being part of the early days of prize fighting.

I suspect, personally, that UFC will become more and more like boxing over time.
