Forget Gomez, Hatton is the.....

Post by Captain Hook »

MANCHESTER MEXICAN:

Ricky Hatton has revealed he is changing his nickname to "The Manchester Mexican" ahead of his fight with Jose Luis Castillo.

The boxer formerly known as "Hitman" plans to enter the ring dressed in a poncho and sombrero when he comes up against the Mexican in Las Vegas later this month.

Hatton, who is fighting Castillo for the nominal IBO light welterweight belt, insists the stunt is not designed to wind his opponent up.

He told Nuts magazine: "I've got a lot of fans in Mexico and I've got a good friendship with their former world champion Marco Antonio Barrera.

"So, the idea is just to broaden that Mexican fanbase by coming into the ring dressed as 'The Manchester Mexican', with the sombrero and poncho.

"Whenever I go to see Marco fight, his fans come up to me for pictures and say: 'Hey, Ricky, you're the white Mexican!'

Hatton's in good company

"I'm only 5ft 6ins myself, but you feel like Gulliver when you go to Mexico! They're all hard people. They come from hard backgrounds and that's why they can all fight like crazy."

Hatton, 28, is renowned for being a bit of a joker and recently revealed to the BBC's Inside Sport programme that he likes nothing better than going for a spin in his Del-Boy inspired three-wheeler.

The Manchester City fan has asked Wayne Rooney, who plays for arch-rivals United, to carry his belt into the ring in Vegas on 23 June as City anthem Blue Moon plays in the background.

And he insists the striker will have to take part in his traditional post-fight bad shirt party, where Hatton usually becomes reacquainted with "two old friends of mine - Mr Guinness and Mr Dom Perignon".

Whatever happens in his fight with Castillo, the "Manchester Mexican" moniker is going to be retired straight afterwards, with Hatton declaring: "Hitman's my name and has been from day one. It's worked for me so far."

He should forget the sombrero entrance and drive to the ring in his Del boy three wheeler - now THAT would be an entrance.

I doubt that old Michael Armstrong is too up on geography to be fair!

Wasnt it Brian Hughes who conferred that name onto him, saying his uppercuts were reminiscent of the Puerto Rican Super Fighters??

Pathetic, that's all I can say. So not only is he going to pretend to be a Mexican (With that skin as well) but the fool is betraying his 'beloved' Man City by allowing Rooney to carry his Belt.

I'm sure that the Man City faithful will understand as the Arsenal boy's would if it were a Spurs Player.

The whole thing is becoming very sad and desparate. Still it is an IBO title fight after all and being on Setanta no one will see it anyway!

The WBC think it's for their International title and the IBO think it's for their 'World' title...all a bit odd to me.

As much as i loathe the IBO and agree it is nowhere near a world title you criticising it is a bit like the pot calling the kettle black. After all you fellas have used the false WBU belts in the name of a world title for years.

Derek Chisora already does that, and he's saving up at the moment to try to buy the van and, yes, use that in his ring entrance.

looks like hatton is determined to really lay it on castillo.

i just hope he don't go too mad and forget about defence.

castillo is one of those guys who tends to get into things the longer it goes in a fight.

As you feel nobody will watch boxing on Setenda, can you confirm then, that Sports Network are not looking for a TV deal with them?

so are you. you neglect to mention it's also for the universally recognised title, the only 1 that really counts. speaking of sad and desperate, isn't that why your boss is doing lots of strange things like talking of bringing over a world class foe for Enzo, putting in ridiculous bids for rubbish fights (Froch-Adamu 2) just to have a bit of class on the bill, and allegedly trying to collude with King to win purse bids for Haye v Mormeck?

Did someone have a panic attack?

You guys really have effed up British boxing. Showtime didn't want you (wonder why they decided great fights no rights?). Sky didn't want you. ITV are sick and tired of you lot. I just hope the TV companies wise up and make SN put on fights not farces.

Getting Rooney to come in to Blue Moon should be quite entertaining, hopefully Hatton is focused on the fight itself rather than his entrance. As for which title it's for, who gives a f***, it's a match fans want to see and most of us stopped caring about alphabelts a long long time ago.

If ITV weren't pissed off, why was Warren on the defensive? i.e. if it hadn't been stopped so early, more viewers would have tuned in to the Manfredo bout. We know they were upset about not getting the target audience and the contract is soon up. One of Warren's columns suggested that ITV weren't willing to pay enough to RENEW...what does this suggest...

Come on, it was the farce of all farces, A DISGUSTING BLACK EYE FOR THE SPORT, reflected in the relatively poor TV audience. Someone has to answer for it. And it has happened before...Why did Warren go off on one at one of the Welsh sports writers? Why all the sudden talk of GOOD FIGHTS? Why all the talk of the Beeb and Setanta bidding for his services...

I believe we are in a new era. As in America where the focus will be on making the top fights and not giving promoters and fighters carte blanche. Sky have upped their quality domestically (2006) and internationally. Setanta have picked up Cotto-Judah ffs...It'll soon be about delivering the fights. Who wants to see star names in flop fights? No wonder the audience dwindled. After all, how do you know Calzaghe is Mr Legend if he has a shit fight with Bika??
