Just because a handful of guys have harder one punch power doesn;t make his power over rated. Come on those KO's that we've all seen were spectacular. Not usually one punch, but BAM BAM BAM.... fights over.

Tyson was physically strong, yes, but in his prime before leaving Kevin Rooney and Bill Cayton and hooking up with Robin Givens and Don King...

Tyson's greatest assets were his:

-Terrific defense (head movement, bobbing and weaving), his sparring with welterweights and middleweights with him not allowed to hit back, but to block, made him all but untouchable as a HW.

-Amazing hand speed and pinpoint accuracy

combine that with his ferocity...he was one helluva hoss to handle.

But was he over-rated? Well, had it been anyone else who defeated Bonecrusher Smith, Tony Tubbs, an old Larry Holmes, Trevor Berbick, Pinklon Thomas (a drug addict), Tyrell Biggs (another substance abuser who was moved too soon), Frank Bruno and Carl The Truth Williams...

I dont think anyone would have really cared, it was just the way Tyson won his bouts, that made him so popular---but his opponents were 'average' at best.

A lot of guys had more pure power than Tyson. If he hadn't been able to hit fighters right on the button when they weren't expecting it, he wouldn't have gotten half as many knockouts.

So was his power overrated or not in your opinion? I think that if 5 or 10 other guys (or even 20 guys) hit harder than Tyson it still doesn;t mean that his power was overrated. He still had plenty of pop and could get three shots in before the guy knew what was happening. Ali had great speed but couldn't get guys out of there like Tyson so to say that he stopped fighters mostly with speed is not entirely true. You have to have world class power to get the knockouts that he did.

i forget where, but iread an interview of larry holmes(who was old when tyson beat him) and holmes said that shavers hit harder than tyson. he also said norton hit harder than holyfield.

imo no. his power was not over rated. he was a small HW, got to put that into consideration.

Holmes also said that Tyson was a sharper, more accurate puncher, that he could put together a combo & every shot would all be powerful & that he was awkward, hard to hit etc.

Granted, Tyson may not have had the power that Shavers had, but Tyson had the unique combination of speed & power, more-so than any other HW I've ever seen.

no it wasnt...He was and will always be the meanest offsensive HW ever to live...Foreman might have had more crude strenght...but Tyson's power was also coming from his astonishing handspeed combined to his short arms.

I agree, speed is also power and tyson had speed along with combinations not seen in the heavyweight division. The only other heavyweight boxer I've seen in the last thirty years with that kind of hand speed and combinations is this new kid on the block Povetkin. This former Gold Medalist, may have faster hands than Tyson. Not quite the power of Tyson, but hits in 5 and 6 punch combo's . He's in tough on the 30th with Donald. We'll see if he pass's this test in only his 13th fight.
