This is my top ten of the greatest Middleweights in Boxing history.....
1. Harry Greb
2. Stanley Ketchel
3. Bob Fitzsimmons
4. Sam Langford
5. Mickey Walker
6. Ray Robinson
7. Jake Lamotta
8. Mike Gibbons
9. Carlos Monzon
10. Tony Zale

.....theres not much to choose between many of these greats, but I feel that these are the best middleweights ever (in my humble opinion) ....and would be interested in any reactions (not to abusive I hope) and any different middleweight top tens.

Although Leonard only fought briefly at Middleweight, he beat Hagler and in my opinion would have beaten many of the other great Middleweights who regularly appear in top 10 lists, therefore I've included him.

I would have Hagler in there. He never got stopped, was knocked down only once (a slip against Roldan), fought the Philly warriors to prove himself, then beat all-comers in his seven year reign.
Hagler HAS to be in there surely.

Based on that---Bob Fitzsimmons, Kid McCoy, Philadelphia Jack O'Brien, Jack Dillon, Battling Levinsky, George Carpentier, Battling Siki, Mike McTique, Jack Delaney, Paul Berlenbach, Tommy Loughran, John Henry Louis

would not have had a chance against him.

Not to mention Billy Conn, Joey Maxim, Archie Moore, and Harold Johnson.

And if Leonard would have taken even more steroids, he would have beaten any heavyweight champion---

with the exception of Ali, of course.

That Leonard was quite a fighter.

Ask the news media and ABC TV.

Dick Tiger is too often overlooked by some people, he just missed my top ten but thats not to say that I don't think he'd have had a chance with those in the top 10. He had great strength and stamina and a chin of iron (only cracked against Foster and you can't hold that against him) was an exciting fighter to watch too. He'd have given Hagler hell.

Interesting list Headhunter... the middles are tough to rate as they had so many great champinons and fighters like Langford and Mike gibbons who didn't win the title, ....Carlos Monzon must be in top ten though I feel... I think he would have beaten Hagler, Zale and Lamotta and give Robinson hell... he was very strong and skilled and very tactically astute, some people say he was just awkward and he certainly wasn't as good to watch as Robinson, but he always fought within himself and did what he needed to do to win... his record at a time when the Middles was full of talent is phenominal... unbeaten in his last 80 odd fights!....

what the? i could have swore i put monzon in. sorry about that, he definatley comes in at three, i think robinson and hagler faced better opposition, but the magnificent argie should be in the top five of anyones list. didn`t he beat benvenuti who had a unbeaten run that spanned the am`s and pro ranks of something like 190 fights. again sorry about that all carlos fans.

Harry Greb was without doubt the Greatest middleweight ever.
Number two could have been Sam Langford if he could have made the weight, which for his 5`8" frame would have been quite close. But William Ward gets the vote at for me, being slightly smaller I think he may have made the weight better. Though these two chose to fight at and above lightheavy.
Ray Robinson was great at welterweight not middle..read his record.
And any of the fighters mentioned could have fought it out for the other positions and there would be no real surprises.
Monzon,Hagler,Ketchel,Walker,Toney,Jones Jr.,McCallum,Nunn and the underrated Reggie Johnson.

Greb was employed to spar with Dempsey this has been written by Jack Kearns who was in a position to know.And as the story goes truth or myth, Greb roughed Dempsey up.Either way Dempsey did not fight him yet fought many men that Greb fought,Greb fought anybody,he fought William Ward when most top fighters ran a mile(white fighters anyway).This was a natural fight to make yet was not made.We can only guess, but I would go along with the Dempsey ducking him.
