Re: Heavyweight greats top ten
That's a good list. I agree Larry Holmes should always be high and that ALi and Louis are right up there. Wouldn't argue with Jack Johnson at number two.silkov wrote:This is my pick of the best 10 heavyweights ever,

Here's mine...
1.) Joe Louis...(the 'complete package')
2.) Muhammad Ali...(the fastest ever, superb defense)
3.) Jack Johnson...(the most hated, until Ali, & Nat Fliesher's #1)
4.) Jack Dempsey...(terrific power, smart)
5.) George Foreman...(the ability to beat any of them on any given day!)
6.) Gene Tunney...(how can this guy ONLY be 6th? One of my favorites)
7.) Jim Jefferies...(tough & DANGEROUS)
8.) Larry Holmes...(the most UNDERRATED in history, in my opinion)
9.)Sonny Liston...(one 'bad ass' S.O.B., good ring technician, POWERFUL)
10.) *****tie******
Joe Frazier...(won the biggest fight of all time 3/8/71, HUGE heart)
Rocky Marciano...(rough & tough, would be a good matchup for Joe)

A little less of your high and mighty arrogance wouldn't hurt...
Post YOUR picks...
If the rest of us here are all too far beneath you, because some people appreciated the career of Ali, then that's YOUR problem...

Terap, looking at your revised top ten great heavyweights I see that I ve managed to convert you!. But perhaps I done I ve done it too well!!!!...... I ve heard about giving a fighter ten out of ten but I never thought I d see you give Ali 10 out of 10!!!. It's a strange old world. Especially if you're a boxing fan.

Heres my favs:
1. Muhammad Ali (extremely fast, skilled, tough, cunning...... a great mediapersonality and human being).
2. Joe Louis.
3. Rocky Marciano.
4. George Foreman
5. Jack Dempsey.
6. Jack Johnson.
7. Larry Holmes.
8. Mike Tyson.
9. Max Schmeling.
10. James J. Jeffries (I got his name from a book :-)

1.Rocky Marciano-boxing icon
2.Joe Louis-12 years world chamoion.
3.Mike Tyson-great power
4.Muhammad Ali-smooth dancer
5.Ezzard Charles- the best boxer
Low points.
The only Rocky Marciano's problem is that he is undefeated and many people hate him becouse of this fact. Boxing specialists, becouse is not elegance and not have good boxing tehnique. Other boxers, becouse they are all loosed in career. Journalists becouse is not very interestig speaker.
All these people comparet only one man with achievables of many differents boxers, from different generations, not undisputed champions and even not from one weight division. For example M. Ali popularity and harizma.J.Louis long time title reign. J.C. Chaves and W.Pep consecutive wins Larry Holmes , Dariusz Michalczewski...
Result - one dream boxing person versus Rocky Marciano.
Joe Louis was 12 years champ, but this inclused 4 years WW2 years. On teory Marciano can be 12 years champ (if war was in his time). Louis can't be undefeated champ, becouse Max Shemeling destroy him before championship bouts. Joe first bout vs. A Godoy was actualy draw. He lost his firs fight vs Walcott .Charles outpointed him. Marciano destroyed him.
Mike Tyson had animal power, but not very good mental condition.
"The Greatest" is the best actor in boxing and huge star, but he with nothing is the only or intangible as Marciano and Louis.
E.Charles is not very concentrate sometimes and lost by avarage boxers.

9. mace
10. dempsey
ali and lennox lewis beat the brown bomber into third place because i think the standard of opposition they faced was stiffer than joe`s in general. ali though well past his prime was still able to cope with the likes of frazier and foreman and i think time will be quite kind to lennox lewis.
though we may not think it now, the 90`s will be looked back upon as a golden era for heavyweights and lennox was the best of them. i know he lost a few but so did ali, dempsey and louis. plus lennox never lost a real big career defining fight. when he was up for it, he won. with hindsight the likes of tyson, holyfield, bowe, tua, golota, ruddock, grant, briggs etc will be looked back on as a decent bunch as a whole. i think that lot are stronger than schmelling, sharkey, braddock, baer, carnera ect. and stronger than cooney, norton, dokes etc. the rock is a favourite of mine but the men he beat were not the greatest and he had plenty of trouble with the likes of walcott, charles and lastarza.
