Challenging the upper age limit in amateur boxing?
Reading about the diabetic lad who wants to box got me thinking.
Has anyone ever made a legal challenge against the ABAE about their
discriminatory age limit?
There are no legal, moral or health reasons for the age limit. Surely
it is illegal?
I have just found out amateur boxing is the ONLY sport in the olympics with an age limit.
Any legal eagles on here, what would be the chances of getting the law to change the ABAEs ridiculous upper age limit rule?
Jane Couch took on the ABA and the BBB of C about their discriminatory laws and won both times didn't she?

I'm nearly at Light heavy now carlos, Weights coming off easy, I might even try to make middle........Carlos-Wigan wrote:I used to do a bit in St Helens for the defunct Britannia ABC but it is more to do with Punchy Joe becoming the cruiserweight hope of Hyde and the silly ABA age limit stopping him! :(wiganboxer wrote:carlos whats up are u after boxing but ur to old are sumert?
I might just try and get some unlicensed fights, its better than nothing.
Trouble is im a single parent and all the boxing gyms open in the evening while i'm cooking the tea, play fighting and reading bedtime stories to my 6 year old.

I totally agree and have thought about this many times. They could at least have an upper age limit like in the states when over 35s can box amateur but they have to box opponents of a similar age group.Carlos-Wigan wrote:But surely it is illegal... it is age discrimination... thus subject to the lawDavidPayne wrote:Carlos,
Face it mate - you've left it too late;-)
being used to get this silly rule being overturned...![]()
Besides I'm off to South Korea in September so no combat sports for me!

Good on yer Joe, keep training... someone will challenge this rule and they will have to scrap it because it is highly illegal.Punchy Joe wrote:I'm nearly at Light heavy now carlos, Weights coming off easy, I might even try to make middle........Carlos-Wigan wrote:I used to do a bit in St Helens for the defunct Britannia ABC but it is more to do with Punchy Joe becoming the cruiserweight hope of Hyde and the silly ABA age limit stopping him! :(wiganboxer wrote:carlos whats up are u after boxing but ur to old are sumert?

Thye would have to prove why it is safer for a 33 year old to box than a 34 year old (and then a 32 year old compare to a 31 year old and so on etc)
The age limit has no basis in any medical facts. Boxing is a dangerous sport at any age.
But it is safer the older you get I believe because a persons bodyweigt stableises the older you get thus having a natural weight divsion. Between 18 and 24 I went from 12st 7lbs to 15 stones.

If this ABAE rule came under proper legal scrutiny it would have to be changed. It is highly discrminatory and thus illegal. 8)E wrote:I totally agree and have thought about this many times. If that is the case why do they not apply it to pro boxing, esp as it is a much harder game.Scrap wrote:Carlos, theres a very good reason for the age limit. get the facts.
The board obviously look closer at older fighters and normally don't license or re-license them but every case is looked at in regard to it's own merits.
Why can't amateur boxing do the same instead of this blanket ban

RUBBISH - ABSOLUTE UTTER RUBBISH!!!!!Scrap wrote:35 or just before the body doesnt repair itself or has the ability to do soto any safe degree. With the pros the problem is restraint of trade. With the Ams theres a difference theres no trade Neurologically its dangerous.
Children of 11 are allowed to box and their brains are still developing, in fact your body and brain still develop until your 21, it’s far more dangerous theoretically to box between ages 11-21.
It’s never been proven that’s its neurologically more dangerous to Box at age 45 never mind 35
Total bollocks mate
Axe its not bollocks. As a rule with age the two hemisperes of the brain open.it was thought for some time after examing the old fighters with Punch drunk syndrome that this was the cause and is picked up on mri scans. most of the older boxers with these signs had there liceense revoked. It happened to a kid I was working with who was examined by the top neurosurgeon in this country. With the iformation we had we took the board on and won, the boards doctor resigning at that time. The board is safety conscious and have the welfare of BOXERS in mind they dont want them to finish up like Joe

Imagine if they did change the upper age limit though?
You would see prime British amateur talent getting battered by 65 yr old Cubans!!!!
Could be embarrassing
Maybe it's done to stop scenarios like that happening!!!
I would put my house and everything in it,on the modern day 55 yr old Teofilo Stevenson against any of Britains current super heavyweight amateurs!!
In fact, even now,he could probably take them two at a time!

True, the Cubans do take a lot,as they fight an awful lot.In comparison to their British counterparts, many of whom are petrified of that dreaded word LOSE.Scrap wrote:iterestingly Im told most Cubans over the age of 26 would fail a mri scan they dont get where they are without impact to the head and its not just talent that get them there.
What are you suggesting about their talent not being the only thing that get's them to the top?
Are you saying it's their exposure to plenty of fights,or something more sinister?

Scrap, your just posting a load of rumour and rubbish, not one shred of evidence to back any of it up
Most Cuban boxers over 26 would fail a MRI, I find that very, very hard to believe.
Pain Killers don’t stop brain damage or stop you getting hurt from a punch or getting knocked out, they would only help aches and pains after a bout, so I don’t understand what that’s got to do with anything??
It’s a load of rubbish...............
