Gd'day, eh?

Post by Cap »

As a student of boxing's history, I've often wondered why Australia and New Zealand haven't produced more decent heavyweights. Up here in Canada, we've had a few over the last century who were world-ranked and we don't have that large a population either.

Who were the top 10 Australian/NewZealand heavies of all time? I would think you can lay claim to Bob Fitzsimmons, Frank Slavin, Joe Goddard and Peter Jackson for starters.

Aus and NZ heavies are big slow pondering fighters, always have been. A couple of our top middleweights of years gone by in Dave Sands and Tony Mundine even managed to hold the local MW, LHW and HW titles simultaneously

It's a pity that the Aboriginals are not a large race as they have excellent speed, reflexes and hand/eye co-ordination

Are all your potential cruisers and heavies playing football and rugger? Seems to me that some of those guys might make good fighters. They seem pretty tough and nimble.
