Let's face it, it's dubious whether or not Oscar was even top 3 at 154. I'm not convinced Oscar would have beaten Karmazin or Ouma for instance. Oscar's best win at 154, was over Castillejo. Not a bad win at all of course, but Oscar never did anything to make himself the main man at 154 in the first place.

All this belt hopping is good in terms of making big name fights, but give me a fighter who stays in his division and cleans up any day.

Mayweather could have moved to 140 and stayed there and made a big statement, but I think he was dubious that he could beat everyone at the weight.
The Vargas fight was a fight betweeen two of the top fighters at the time and it brought two belts together. I think Oscar had the right to be number one, then Shane and then Winky.
Vargas was, and has been shot to pieces for a long while now. He's a tough bastard, but he has had numerous health problems for the last few years. What did Vargas do to become a top Light Middle?

The only truly dominant light middleweight of the last 5 years has been Winky Wright. Vargas was at his peak then back in 1999, Winky hit his a bit later.

As I said before, all this belt hopping just muddies the waters.
Vargas is a minor legend - Winky Wright, Ike Quartey, Campas and Marquez make 4 154 titlists in as many fights. Then Trinidad needs to foul the shit out of him and cheat his way to victory

Conversely what did Karmazin do other than lose a decision to Castellijo who Oscar and Vragas both schooled? And of course losing to Cory Spinks after his 5miniutes of fame

Vargas at his peak was a very good fighter, no doubt about it. However, fighting with a thyroid problem is a major major drawback, and his weight making issues were a result of this.

Vargas traded on his guts and determination during his travails with his health, and did well considering, but he wasn't the same fighter any more.

Good points on Vargas, in fact i was actually watching Vargas-Castillejo last night and considering what the Spaniard has done since that was a bloody good win for Vargas. He even dropped his man with a right and had him on rubber legs, not bad for a guy struggling to make weight and burn off excess.

In fact Vargas was doing well in the Mosley fight until the stoppage although he looked shot to pieces in the rematch. I always liked Vargas to be honest, he beat Campas, Marquez, Wright and Quartey all before he even hit 23 years old if i remember correctly? He also controlled periods of the DLH fight.

I am sure he was approaching his 23rd birthday when Trinidad wrecked him, that defeat just took a heck of a lot out of Vargas, he was never the same again. He needs to be careful he doesn't get mullered by the wildman Mayorga.

This thread is about Witter.

I think he beats Harris, but he has to get a move on and get more fights to make some real money in the next 18- 24 months.

But in reality what happens, no matter where you place those ticket selling boxers in the schedule their fans oddly stay in the bar until their favourite is due to box, they will not listen to the pleads of "Junior Witter the world champion is due to box now". Then if you make a ticket selling boxer box before Witter is due to box the fans eff off to the clubs and pubs and yet again Witter and his mini bus half full of fans are left in the venue in an amazingly drab world title fight.

Junior Witter is a brilliant bloke but quite simply he is amzingly reluctant to burst out with the talent he clearly has to showcase his skills. Witter seems reluctant to go to plan b if he does not knock out his opponents in the first 4 rounds.

The Vivian Harris is a fight Witter should win, but if he stinks the place out this time he can say goodbye to any P4P fighter getting into the ring with him.
shut up you muppet, im not anti hatton at all, as a bloke ricky is a top man, im just disappointed in the way his career has gone downhill since he beat KT, in my opinion its all been about money, hatton avoided the likes of cotto and pbf when it suited. lets be honest, a blown up shop worn castillo is not in the league of the 2 fellas i have mentioned. to call yourself top 10 p4p material you should be mixing it with the best...
yeah i can see ya point of view.

the mayweather fight looks dead in the water.

team hatton should have gone for the fight when they had the chance.

i still think the cotto fight will come off though.

castillo is still in the top 5 of potential hatton opponents in my opinion. :box:

Instead of focussing on Hatton who is yet again headlining in Las Vegas with every man and his dog wanting to attend I feel you should perhaps book your seat on the half filled Junior Witter minibus so he feels a little more wanted when he fights.

I have to agree. Ask Junior Witter if he has ever avoided fights himself in the past?

Think Witter turned down fights which were around two weeks notice but don't know about any others.

Since Judah I don't blame for turning down last minute offers.

The case for the Defence would say that he has done things via the traditional route, British, European and World...

But if you look closely his career is a complete non-entitly!! Who has he beaten..At European title level the best name on the record would be Koletnik...thats hardly Earth shattering....other than that the names on the record are applaling

At World level the best name on the Record would be Ndou..a man who loses every time he steps up in class and who will lose his paper title next time out! Other than that a shot to shit Corley and a crap Mexican..its just seems same old same old!!

Now this guy isnt going to get Harris it seems, more wasted time...where does he go from here??

Instead of trying to back door his way to a title should he have fought other top contenders 6 years ago, lost a few, won a few instead of calling out Hatton non-stop..

Cos like it or not..Ricky is a HBO superstar fighting a legend and Witter is sat with his thumb up his ass..sometimes you just have to swallow your pride and get on with it
Imagine that. After all these years your still singing the same tune and still defending Wicky.Witter is a guy who`s career has blossomed since leaving FW and was given a terrible start and fed to the wolves by FW.Id say the Kid has done extremely well. Not everyone can have the silver spoon.

Is it true that Witter turned down Cotto a year or so ago? It was quite short notice...

I was think was at the time before Cotto fought Torres and Torres ended up being the opponent.

Witter probably won't do short notice fights since Judah maybe?

Yeah that rings a bell, but if you want it badly enough you'll go for it...

He was doing a lot of talking about fighting anyone, any time, any place etc etc....

Gets a title shot and turns it down.....

But I guess 2-3 weeks is short notice for someone like Cotto, who would have beaten him IMO.

Whilst a fight with D Hop would give decentish exposure - its got Stinker written all over it. Plus, most of the TV execs and boxing fraternity know that D Hop is fringe world class at best and should have lost to Forbes. How about a non title affair with the winner of Gomez vs Gatti. Whilst these might even be considered less world class than Hopkins (although still not in Gatti's case IMO) at least it will be exciting, surely?

With Chavez Jr sniffing around Gatti then you can forget about Witter getting a look in.

Witter hasnt got a lot of choice but to fight in voluntarys and mandatorys - Maybe he'll luck in and get offered a unification.

Either way, he needs to dispose of Harris impressively to make a statement.

I wouldn't write Gatti off quite yet... He was doing okay vs Baldomir untill the shear strength of a bigger man took over. In some ways he did a better job vs Baldomir than Zab Judah. Also, he didn't look all bad vs Thomas Dammgaurd, who while isn't world class - aint bad.

Still think Gatti would do okay against non elite world class with whom he holds a size advantage over. I would give Gatti a chance in a non title 147 lbs match up vs any of the current 140 champions.

I don't give him a chance against any of the 147 lbs champions, their just too big. Although, I'm far from convinced about Cintron.
